Minor League Player of the Day: Jose Ortiz was 3-for-5 with a walk and a two-run homerun.
Game 1: Syracuse 3 – Louisville 1
Jonathan Broxton started and pitched one inning in his first rehab appearance. It went a little something like this: single, single, single. Then, bases loaded popout, strikeout, strikeout.
Kevin Whelan allowed 2 runs to score in the 2nd inning. Daniel Corcino, the game’s scheduled starter, pitched the final five innings. (Minor league double headers are 7 innings each game.) Corcino surrendered a homerun to the first batter he faced, then retired 15 of the remaining 17. Corcino (5ip, 3 hits, 1 run) didn’t walk a batter and struck out 4.
Corcino also collected one of the team’s three hits. Billy Hamilton had the other two hits, including his 6th homerun of the season. His 6th homerun this year comes in 390 at-bats. Prior to 2013, Hamilton hit 7 homeruns in 1511 at-bats.
Game 2: Louisville 3 – Syracuse 0
Yohan Pino (5.2ip, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 K) held the opponent scoreless for his 2nd consecutive start. Pino hasn’t allowed more than 2 earned runs in a game since June 28th. Jose Diaz picked up his 8th save of the season by striking out two over the last 1.1 innings of the game.
Billy Hamilton had another hit and stole his 64th base of the year. Kristopher Negron hit a solo homerun in the 5th inning. Felix Perez had an RBI double in the 6th inning and later scored.
Josh Smith allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 over 5.2 innings.
Corey Wimberly, Yorman Rodriguez, and Donald Lutz had two hits each. Redleg Nation Spotlight Player Tucker Barnhart reached base twice, walking once and hitting a two-run RBI single in the 6th to tie the game at 3-3.
Barnhart also erased two runners from the basepaths in the game. In the 7th inning, he picked Ender Inciarte off of first base. In the 9th inning, he threw Inciarte out again, this time trying to swipe 2nd base. Inciarte did have one successful steal in the game, and now has 35 SB in 41 attempts.
