Opening Day isn’t until Friday evening for the Cincinnati Reds, but with the regular season beginning today for four teams, all rosters must be finalized today. At the start of the year there will be 30 players on the roster…. unless you are the Cincinnati Reds, who only have 28 players on their opening day roster. After two weeks roster sizes will drop to 28 players. Two weeks after that rosters will drop to 26 players, where they will remain for the rest of the season. There are no expanded September rosters this season. The trade deadline has been pushed to August 31st this year, too.

With all of that said, here is the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Roster:

SP Sonny Gray C Tucker Barnhart
SP Luis Castillo C Curt Casali

SP/RP Tyler Mahle 3B Eugenio Suarez

Christian Colon (added 7/24)

Mark Sheldon of MLB.com says that the team will announce the final two roster spots tomorrow. For now, the team is going with 14 pitchers and 14 position players. Nick Krall told the media (as first reported by C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic) this afternoon that the two additional players will come from within the organization – so expect to be familiar with the players that get added tomorrow. Update: Both Matt Davidson and Christian Colon have been added to the roster.

General Manager Nick Krall explained that while rosters were “due” today, the only requirement was for 25 men. “You have to have 25 guys. You don’t have to name all 30 until tomorrow,” said Krall. “There were some teams that didn’t name all 30 guys and we were one of them. We have two spots left and we’ll add those guys tomorrow.”

As for the two players that will be added – we can debate that if we’d like to, but as manager David Bell hinted at last week, it’s going likely going to be two position players.

“We’ll probably add two position players for those roster spots,” said Krall when asked about the breakdown of pitchers versus hitters in terms of the split between the roster numbers.

The big surprise on this roster isn’t anyone who made it. The surprise is that Anthony DeSclafani will begin the year on the injured list. It was announced that he has a mild right teres major strain and the move is retroactive to Monday. That could mean that he could return quickly and possibly miss just one start – and that’s all that he expects to miss, too, according to what he told the media earlier this afternoon.

This roster also sets the Prasco Park roster, which currently 28 players on it.

The Pitchers Position Players
RJ Alaniz C Mark Kolozsvary
Tejay Antone C Francisco Pena
Jesse Biddle C Tyler Stephenson
Matt Bowman INF Alex Blandino
David Carpenter INF Christian Colon
Jose De Leon INF Matt Davidson
Hunter Greene SS Jose Garcia
Ryan Hendrix INF Jonathan India
Joel Kuhnel INF Alfredo Rodriguez
Nick Lodolo OF Aristides Aquino
Alex Powers OF Stuart Fairchild
Sal Romano OF Boog Powell
Tony Santillan
Justin Shafer

6 true outfieldersm on the MLB roster plus VanMeter and Lorenzen who can fill there as needed seems a little deep to me. Maybe a trade is in the offing?

Jankowski will be the first position player to go in the subsequent cutdowns, barring injuries to others along the way.

I would swear you only have 28 names listed on the Prasco roster? tx

    • Doug Gray

Yeah – had a typo on the “29”.

I wonder how much, if any, 40-man roster space plays into only having 28. Let’s say for example the Reds wanted to add Davidson or Colon. They would have to remove someone from the 40-man and in 15 days would have to decide on whether to keep him or DFA him to remove him (assuming either is out of options). It could be they’d rather play without a full roster rather than risk someone who could act as depth or injury insurance.

That id what I figured too.

Has Disco ever been on an active Reds Opening Day roster?

Article has been updated with information about the remaining two roster spots

For all of the upgrades, and there are have been several ….

Suarez staying healthy stands out on the Opening Roster listed above.

If he were to go down for any length of time …. Farmer? Davidson comes up from Prasco? Moustakas?

All of those choices feels like the Reds would be scrambling, if Suarez were gone for any length of time.

The most “stable” option to me is Moose to 3B if they think it will take some time to get Geno back.

    • Gonzo Reds

If Suarez was down for any length of time it makes the most sense to me, with our crazy OF depth, to move Senzel to cover 2B/3B opposite Moose. I know they’ve said he’s full time CF and would stay that way for a short-term Suarez absence but in the devastating event that Suarez is lost for half to all of the season think that would keep the most talent on the field on a regular basis. If we’re truly playing to win this year you have to make playing to win moves and this would be one.

My guess is that if Suarez went down, they’d put JVM at third and not mess up any of the other position players.

The rosters were supposed to be finalized today, but the Reds aren’t going to announce the final two spots until tomorrow? So the team has already filed the roster with MLB, but just not publicly announced those last two spots?

    • Grand Salami

I guess it gives them an extra day and little more flexibility – but it’s hard to see the motive.

Updated with quotes from Nick Krall on both Anthony DeSclafani as well as the roster moves coming.

Whatever happened to Mitch Nay? I see that maybe he was with Seattle this summer, but don’t see that he made the 60-man. I would have preferred him over Matt Davidson as a backup to 3B/1B or at least have him on Prasco roster.

    • Doug Gray

Nay was released by Seattle back at the end of May. As far as I can tell, he was not picked up by anyone after that.

Owners just ratified 16 team playoff.
Reds chances of making the playoffs just went way up..

    • vegastypo

Tell me they didn’t include letting the top teams pick their opponent in the playoffs. That just sounded bad to me.

      • Old-school

        Division winners 1/2/3.
        2nd place teams 4/5/6.
        Teams 7/8 next best records.

Looks like round 1 has home team hosting all 3 games. No travel.

    • Randy in Chatt

Kyle Farmer then Cristian Colon if he’s added.

    • Doug Gray

Kyle Farmer. The Reds seem to believe he can actually play shortstop. I’m hoping we never need to actually find out if he can do it every day or not.

      • JayTheRed

I’m really hoping for an improved season from Galvis. Hopefully he is playing most of the days.

      • GreatRedLegsFan

I was expecting Blandino to make the roster

  10. PDunc

With a LHP starting tonight I assume we’ll see:
    C – Casali
    1B – Votto
    2B – Moustakas
    SS – Galvis
    3B – Suarez
    LF – Ervin
    CF – Senzel
    RF – Castellanos
DH – Farmer (or Davidson if he makes the 30-man roster)

    • Matt WI

My first take through your post was that was also the assumed batting order, and I was thinking, “okay, PDunc, we’re all a little out of practice, but this is pretty bold” 🙂

  11. Matt WI

I think the website filter thought that pdunc’s name was a bad word or something. I replied to that post using the name and it got eaten by the moderation monster. No worries, Doug… it was nothing earth shattering the Nation can’t live without. Just a friendly joke.

    • Doug Gray

I’m not really sure what triggered the “moderation” on that one. I checked everything I could on the back end to see why and saw nothing. Sometimes the computers decide to do their own thing.
