Well, it was quite the interesting night in Cincinnati. I won’t even attempt to break it down and will just direct you to Jeff Carr’s recap. Somehow, someway the Cincinnati Reds (49-56) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (47-60) will try to play a baseball game about 14 hours later at 12:35 PM. The Reds are going for their third consecutive series win. Oh….and it’s hug watch during today’s game as the trade deadline will be right around the conclusion of today’s game. Buckle up.

Scooter batting 4th and no Ervin, come on Reds let’s get serious. There is enough season left the Reds could still win this weak division.

    • Michael lieb

One last chance to showcase Scooter for a trade.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

With that Ervin situation you refer to, I can’t help thinking the Reds may still be looking to do something, if not this year, then planning for next year.

For, right now, our main 4 OF’s are Winker, Senzel, VanMeter, and Ervin, not to leave out Schebler, also. And, Aquino is coming up quick, probably up here next year. Way too many for next season. Something has to give. Who are the Reds going to commit to? One of these? Bring another in?

Without any major moves, I can’t help thinking Senzel moves to 2nd, giving us Winker, VanMeter, and Ervin for the OF. If Schebler and Aquino can beat one of them out, which I can see, so be it. But, I could see the Reds going into next season with those 5.

If they bring in anyone, it’s got to be for more offense. So, if their move here “is no move”, I would think they would be counting on the younger studs stepping up more given more experience.

      • ToBeDetermined

“Without any major moves, I can’t help thinking Senzel moves to 2nd, giving us Winker, VanMeter, and Ervin for the OF. ”

I understand the logic, but I think the trade of Trammel shows the Reds are very comfortable with Senzel in CF. Because I don’t see any of these 3 Winker, VanMeter nor Ervin as the Reds everyday CF.

Maybe another trade or the signing of a CF free agent occurs in the offseason.

      • Matt WI

Agree on Senzel maybe going to 2nd. But if the starting OF next year is Winker, Ervin, VanMeter, what was even the point of getting Bauer? It would be better if 1 of 3 was a starter, maybe another as the 4th OF. The Reds must get a sure bat to justify this trade.

      • Steve Schoenbaechler

The point of getting Bauer was closing the pitching hole for next season if we lose Roark. Not saying we will or won’t. But, no move by anyone, we lose Roark.

      • CFD3000

VanMeter is not an outfielder. He can play serviceable, yes, but why is everyone trying to fit a square infield peg into a round outfield hole? Leave Senzel in center where he will be very good. JVM plays second every day (sorry Scooter), and Winker, Ervin and Aquino can handle the corner spots.

      • VaRedsFan

CFD3000 has the correct answer. Senzel is the best CF’er on the team. JVM is a better 2nd Baseman than he is an OF’er.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Just a hunch, guys. They are trying to see if Scooter can recapture the batting form of the past couple of years, and then resign him at a bargain before or during free agency.

  2. James

NOW that Scooter is our clean up batter I know our offense is going to take off now!

  3. CFD3000

This could be very interesting. Here’s hoping it’s a calm, professional baseball game with the Reds 6-2 winners. Not a blowout where one side gets frustrated, nor a nail biter where every at bat is magnified. But I’m not holding my breath…

  4. SaveTheFarm

I would have hit DD lead off, but that might have caused issues hahah. You can’t throw at people’s heads and get away with it. Who knows what they were saying to Amir, love that guy. Love seeing Votto fired up too, not something you see out of him very often. Haven’t heard of their pitcher so I’d imagine they’re going to do something stupid again.

    • Pete

Votto is the unsung hero in the melee, he led and led well.

      • RedsMonk65

He’s the best. I just like him all-around.

  5. Pete

For those concerned about the loss of hitting in the Bauer deal:
    Winker 261/345/462, wRC+ = 108
    Senzel 278/340/463, wRC+ = 107
    VanMeter 307/402/533, wRC+ = 143
    Ervin 357/426/595, wRC+ = 162

Sitting in Louisville ready to contribute:
    Aquino 299/356/636, wRC+ = 142
    Crook 323/380/610 wRC+ = 146
    O’Grady 283/357571, eRC+ = 128

The issue with run production isn’t because of how the guys above produced but they haven’t had enough of an opportunity.

    Play the kids!

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

That’s the part that intrigues me, down in AAA. There are a lot of good bats going on down there right now. I mean, for the entire season. I wonder if any of that is working in the Reds calculations for the rest of this season and setting up next season.

      • Pete

I would hope so Steve. Especially Aquino. Outside of Suarez, there isn’t much power in the line up. Aristides could possibly fix it. Even his pop ups are impressive. Reds fans deserve an opportunity to get a look.

    • wkuchad

Though I like the trade, i’m more concerned about the loss of hitting against lefty pitching.

      • RedsMonk65

Hopefully Ervin starts appearing in the starting lineup more often.

    • Roger Garrett

Words of wisdom for sure.Young guys can get it done if given a legit chance.

  6. Pete

Start of a new era, I have butterflies and actual believe the Reds have a chance to get in the playoffs….this year.

    • RedsMonk65

I’m cautiously optimistic. I certainly like the direction things are going. The FO has been quite proactive this past year. I like the trade yesterday. Whether that translates into playoffs this year, I don’t know, but yesterday’s events may have galvanized this team.

We’ll see what happens the rest of the day (in terms of other possible trades, not other possible brawls, suspensions, etc.)

Stupid Pirates. Have to say that as often as possible.

      • RedsMonk65

        Stupid Pirates. (Again, just because)

      • Pete

With a relatively young team coming very soon, his leadership will be more valuable than ever.

  7. Pete

A new day has dawned – Winker, baby.

  8. RedsMonk65

Scooter might be coming around, hopefully.

    Van Meter continues to hit.

Now we need to score some runs.

  9. Gaffer

Why have the reds not traded Roark or Wood or Scooter? They are redundant on this team and not signed ne t year.

    • Sliotar

Scooter can’t have much of a market.

Roark – would not surprise me if he stays, or goes. Mahle out for 2 more weeks and Wood having only 1 start completed kind of makes case to stay…if the Reds are convinced they are still “in it.”

Wood – The Reds have traded and traded …. and traded for SP. Tough to see him moved now, without evaluating if he can survive in GABP.

  10. Pete

Castillo is dealing and pitch efficient too.

  11. Broseph

Ugh. Tv camera just caught Walt lounging upstairs in GABP confines. Hope his hands aren’t on the FO phones.

  12. Pete

Senzel hustles, he will be a leader for this team for a long time to come.

    • VaRedsFan

like Sam LeCure said…bat him lead off please

      • Pete

Yes and I’d like to see the Jesse/Phil combo bat second and move JV down the 6 spot.

    • SaveTheFarm

So what exactly does they have to do to get tossed? Threw over DD’s head last night…nothing. With a base open and the pitcher coming up you hit Tucker…..sorry that’s not an accident. Up and in on Winker…..come on ump.

  13. vegastypo

Gee, Hurdle visits mound, and then another plunking. Maybe a coincidence, but thanks to the way the Pirates do business, they can’t get the benefit of the doubt.

    • Sliotar

      Have radio overlay with MLB.TV.

The catcher’s reaction was “darn, got away from him” … but Brantley was pretty skeptical and that the pitch looked really bad.

Suspicion not going to go away anytime soon with those guys.

      • Pete

Brantley knows about this stuff…. Chris Welch never thinks anyone is throwing to hit a batter. Probably just their personality difference. Jeff was not bothered about the brawl yesterday either. Welch was horrified.

      • VaRedsFan

0-2 pitch, with Votto on deck…I’d lean to the unintentional side

      • Pete

I agree but with the Pirates you never really know. It’s too bad but they earned the skepticism.

  14. Roger Garrett

Bucs have hit two today and even if they hit another MLB won’t do a thing about it.Bucs have a history and until they pay dearly in fines and suspensions they will continue.Umps lost control last night and could happen again today but I hope not.

  15. Pete

How about them youngsters, I want to see more of them: Ervin, Peraza, Aquino, etc.

  16. VaRedsFan

LOB’s are starting to add up. Hope it doesn’t cost them.

  17. VaRedsFan

Failing to bust it open again…i hope castillo can go 8 or more

  18. Pete

Jameson Hannah, CF, 21 yo in A+

    283/341/381, wRC+ = 103

    • RojoBenjy

Definitely soothing my scraped feelings for losing TT.

      • Pete

Sometimes things have a funny way of working out. Notice the position he plays. It could all come down to Trammell not winning the club’s confidence as a CFer.

    • RedsMonk65

I looked him up. Seems decent. High AVG/OB guy. Not too much power it seems.

  19. RojoBenjy

    Scooter taken out.

And the trade deadline is interesting this year!

    • RojoBenjy

Why can all of you see this but not the Reds management?
He’s just having to beat down the door himself.

  20. Roger Garrett

JVM has both of our walks.Guy already knows the strike zone and is proving he belongs.Hope he never gets the memo about swinging early and often.

    • Pete

VanMeter + Senzel, we are going to have to get use to it.

      • Curt

Happily, Batman & Robin (even if they switch roles from time to time.) Cornerstones, these two. Exciting stuff!

  21. Centerfield

Stupid Pirates (just to get another one in)
Obviously Roark had to go, just no spot for him. Corey Dickerson traded to Philly.

  22. CI3J

Corey Dickerson was just traded. You could see him saying goodbye in the dugout.

  23. Pete

Bullpen needs to step up. Great outing by Castillo .

  24. Centerfield

Senzel needs to be kept in centerfield. VanMeter to second base next year. Try to sign Jose Iglesias. Reds could even make an offer to Puig over the winter.
    Lorenzen in to pitch.

    • Curt

Respectively disagree. Senzel should be returned to the dirt from whence he came. The Roark trade may well indicate the FO is thinking the same thing. We’ll see..

      • Centerfield

I just think Senzel will end up being an very, very good centerfielder. I see more value there than at second base. India could even wind up 2B, but I think they will see if Scooter will sign a team friendly deal 2-3 years. Scooter was the team’s best clutch hitter for two consecutive years. The prospect from the A’s is still a couple of years away. If we are loading up on pitching, then defense up the middle becomes especially important. Scooter starts and Peraza comes for defense late in the game.

  25. VaRedsFan

Disaster averted….AND they work R Iggy into a save situation.

  26. Seat101

    All right Michael Lorenzen!!

When was the last time he played in the field?

  27. vegastypo

Leapin’ lizards, look at that catch!

Maybe that should be Leapin’ Lorenzen !!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Steve Schoenbaechler

And, that’s why I wouldn’t have had a problem keeping Leake. Leake could pinch hit, pinch run, and even possibly play some emergency SS if needed.

  29. RedsMonk65

Reds win — beat STUPID PIRATES

    • RedsMonk65

Nice day for Castillo. Senzel and JVM continue to impress. Notice Winker’s slow return to respectable numbers?

  30. Pablo

Get the hell out of town PITTSberg! Didn’t think I’d dislike a team more than the Cards but these thugs tops now.

  31. RedsMonk65

Not to throw a wet blanket on the party, but when do you suppose the suspensions are coming? Later today? Tomorrow? They’re certainly coming — I suspect it will be a decent-sized one for Bell.

    • Steve Schoenbaechler

I would think decent size suspension and fines for two people specific (so, possibly more): Garrett and that Pirate pitcher. Garrett for charging the Pirates like he did. The Pirate pitcher for admitting that he was aiming for Derek’s head, all because Derek watched a HR go out of the park.

    • Tom Mitsoff

For player to be named later. Maybe clearing a path for VanMeter at second base.

      • Tom Mitsoff

and Greinke headed to Houston from D’Backs!

    • Pete

Good news for Scooter and the Reds. Win-win.

    • RedsMonk65

… for a player to be named. Better than nothing — which is what we got him for.
