It will be a very interesting day at Great American Ball Park, and perhaps a chance for Reds fans to think about what might have been. Alex Wood finally makes his Cincinnati Reds debut, and local fans will get a chance to take a look at a lefthander who has been among the better portsiders in the National League in recent seasons.

Wood has two goals between now and the end of the season: pitch well and stay injury-free. He’s coming up on free agency, and of course, is hoping for a big payday. His injury history will give many teams pause. Should Wood pitch well for the remainder of the season, the Reds will likely hope for a chance to sign him on team-friendly terms.

It’s also 1967 throwback uniforms day, and you can read a thorough flashback to that year here at Redleg Nation by Brian Erts.

Game time at Great American Ball Park is 1 p.m. Eastern time in the rubber game of a three-game set.

Starting Pitchers

Peter Lambert 41 5.93 4.31 17% 4.4%
Alex Wood (2018 LAD) 151.2 3.68 3.72 26.9% 7.7%

The Rockies have lost each of the last six starts by righthander Lambert. As mentioned above, it’s a big day for Wood, who was supposed to be the prize of the winter trade with the Dodgers. The rest of this season is important for both him and the Reds. Wood will have the opportunity to show that he can stay healthy and pitch effectively. The Reds will have the chance to watch him up close and ponder what sort of offer they should make, if any, to the pending free agent. Look for no more than four or five innings tops today.

Raisel Iglesias’ appearance in a save situation Saturday evening was intriguing on a couple of levels. One, it got him in the “save situation” which he thirsts for. Two, did you notice that he faced the lower half of the Rockies’ batting order? And that Michael Lorenzen was used in the high-leverage situation against the all-star-laden upper half of the Colorado batting order in the inning previous?

    I’ve seen this movie

    A Dusty Shade of Red

    Starring Gennett Iglesias

  2. MFG

Good article! It appears the Reds are showcasing a few players for possible trades. Lets hope Scooter, Puig and Jose Iglesias play well and lets hope Wood pitches well.
Most of these guys including Roark and Raisel could be wearing another uniform in the coming days. I really like these guys but the long term health of the Reds is more important.

  3. Justin

This appears to be the garage sale lineup. Wood, Puig, Gennett, Iglesias and maybe Iglesias. Prices are marked but will consider all offfers.

  4. CFD3000

I hope they stay: Wood, J. Iglesias, and because it’s not my money and won’t hamper the Reds ability to sign other players: Puig

I hope they bring a nice return: Roark, Gennett, R. Iglesias, Dietrich

    Why bother?:Hughes, Hernandez

This does feel like a window display lineup, otherwise why is Gennett playing in place of Winker? Excited to see Alex Wood, and hope he’s part of the Reds near future (assuming he stays healthy of course). Go Reds!

    • PhP

I would hold on to DD unless the return blew you away. He’s under contract next year, provides position flexibility and power off the bench. I don’t think he should be starting at 2b, but still has value to the team in a bench role.

    • Centerfield

I think Roark would be worth signing as well to a 2-3 year deal, but it appears he’ll be the first, and maybe the only, one to go. Maybe trade him and make him an offer over the winter.

  5. C Holbert

I do not understand, why the hot bat is replacing another of the young pieces. It is apparent Scooter will not be back, so have some guts and play the future, especially when it is costing another future piece ABs.

    • Pete

Apparently Scooter is on the trade block and the Reds are probably hopeful he has a couple of good games. Same with Puig and Iglesias, I hope. Come August 1st and they still put this lineup on the field it will be disappointing to say the least.

      • C Holbert

Yea, I understand that, and teams probably want to see him, I get that as well. He has not looked good since he came back and has never really been able to throw. I would think he is way down the list of potential traded players, and what are they doing to Winker’s confidence in the meantime…kind of discouraging.

      • Pete

My hope is the Reds FO sees it like I do, trade off all the FA’s with the possible exception of Wood and play the kids. There may be a bright future ahead but playing and holding onto the older guys will stagnate the team growth or worse, derail it.

Realizing it’s probably the longest of long shots, but not impossible, July 1st 2020’s starting rotation:

        Senzel – cf
        Winker – lf/1b, Ervin – if
        Suarez – 3B
        Aquino – rf
        Votto – 1b
        Peraza/Blandino – ss
        Someone – c

Obviously, it’s all hope and prayers right now, everything would have to break right but at least I can dream about something like this.

    • Centerfield

      Showcasing Scooter I think….

  6. Curt

Nice catch by the VanMeter. Don’t think Winker gets that.

  7. BigRedMike

    I like the uniforms

    Wood has good breaking stuff

  8. VaRedsFan

Iggy4 delivers the well placed fist hit…rbi
    Tucker drives Scooter in!

  9. Big Ed

Very nice piece of hitting by Barnhart.

  10. RojoBenjy

Anyone think the Reds are showcasing VanMeter?

    If a team makes worthwhile…?

    But unlikely.

    • Centerfield

I would assume that everyone is available for the right offer.

    • Curt

Rojo my friend, I’m just gonna pretend I didn’t see this. Haha!

      • RojoBenjy

Just trying to keep it lighthearted.

  11. LWblogger2

Sure wood have been nice to have this pitcher from the beginning of the year.

    You’re welcome.

  12. Centerfield

Wood is exactly the sort of pitcher the Reds have needed in their rotation: Lefty, good breaking stuff, and throws strikes. How about a 12 game winning streak (starting yesterday).

  13. LWblogger2

Reds players getting ejected, especially early in games over balls and strikes needs to stop. The bench is short and it’s bad, bad baseball to get tossed there. Suarez just the other day did the same thing after the 1st. Not worth getting tossed over.

    • vegastypo

Agreed. The only thing that shocked me about that sequence is that Bell didn’t see the need to get ejected also — to stand up for his player.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I also agree. It’s just stupid. They seem to think they are the only team that gets bad balls and strikes calls.

  14. Roger Garrett

Amazing that we are going to lose 2 out 3 games at home against the Rockies. The guys that Black ran out there are just awful and their stats say they are awful. That inning right there says it all to me 2 strikeouts and a fly ball out of our 2,3,4 guys on their 3rd look at a guy that is just bad.My wife asked me if I had to watch all 162 games to figure out the Reds can’t hit.I told her I guess I do and she just shook here head and said and what is the definition of insane?

    • Curt

The definition is “us” Roger, haha!

  15. Mutton Lettuce Tomato

Wow, and just like that, this game is starting to feel like another one that the Reds might let get away from them. They really need the series win today to get some forward momentum.

  16. LWblogger2

I thought VanMeeter would get rung up there. Ump has been calling that one all day. Crappy AB by Scooter there.

    • Roger Garrett

Yes and yes.Just amazes me sometimes. An 8 pitch walk and maybe JVM should have been rung up but Scooter swings at the first pitch. Why are we in such a hurry to set down.

  17. Curt

Great at bat by VanMeter, against a lefty!

    • Roger Garrett

Right now he has a hit and our only two walks.Surely the Rockies aren’t afraid of him.My guess is he won’t chase.Guess he didn’t get the memo to swing often and early.Bell said he had to get to know him so he may not know how we hit up here.

    • LWblogger2

Indeed it would. A little more upright. That one off the mask in the top of the inning probably wasn’t too good for his constitution though.

  18. Hanawi

Good news for the Reds is that a lot of rotations are melting down for contenders. Brewers, Yankees, Braves, Phillies at least could use Roark.

    • LWblogger2

I think he’ll fetch something. Maybe a guy outside the top 100 or an MLB utility guy with team control.

    • Grand Salami

Yup demand should be on the rise.

  19. Don

great inning for garrett. Lorenzen needs to throw strikes.

  20. Don

big out getting blackmon after wild pitch

  21. Don

lorenzen needs this out for the reds vs tapia

  22. Don

Lozenzen got out of his own mess.

Iglesias is going to get his chance to impress in the 9th vs top of Rockies lineup of all stars

  23. LWblogger2

Lorenzen made it interesting but got the job done.

  24. wutinthehail

Top half of the 8th was the epitome of what’s wrong with baseball and why fans aren’t going to games. Lorenzen working VERY slow and the batters stepping out of the box many times. It was brutal to watch.

Bottom of the 8th and the game zooms past the three hour mark like it’s standing still. And it’s not like it’s a high scoring game.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I agree to an extent. I’m not sure it’s why fans aren’t going to games, but it sure is not fun to watch from a fan standpoint. As all of that was happening, I thought of my wife who does not really enjoy baseball — for one reason, because it is slow and has no pace. And I thought, yep, I get it.

  25. Don

great day for barnhardt. 3 for 3, 2 RBI and a walk.

  26. Art

Is there a reason why Lorenzen does not hit for himself, even if he is coming out the game in favor of Iglesias?

  27. RojoBenjy

Ryan Gennett has crossed the Mendoza line!

    • Gaffer

Yeah now we have a chance (tiny as it is) to trade him.

  28. Don

Time for Iglesias to pitch when he wants, save situation and starting a clean 9th

See if he can beat the rockies best

Iggy provides thrills and hold-your-breath moments all in the same inning.

But this situation is what he says he wants. Here’s hoping he’s valuable as a 1-inning closer to somebody else yet this week.

Got it done in the end.

    • Tom Mitsoff

If the Reds can get something in exchange for Iglesias that can help them for a few years moving forward, they should make the trade and make Garrett and Lorenzen co-closers.

  30. Don

2nd series win in a row.

Iglesias pitches totally different in this situation other high leverage situations.

    great team win

  31. Don

time to sweep the pirates to put some distance on 5th place so they can break the streak of last place finishes.

Sell the Free agents to be as the young guys are playing well.

    • Eric B

Really need to sweep those pirates. This “RUN”we keep hearing of must start with this next series.

  32. TR

    R. Iglesias gets it done and racks up another save. A very good seasonal debut for Alex Wood and Tucker leads the offense.

  33. Eric B

Senzel ejection. If not for the twin drama queen impersonation from House and Bell like two jealous girlfriends keeping their man from fighting the big bad bully Senzel would have been fine I think. It only escalated when that charade started with House, then Bell was not going to be out done. Nick just wanted to calmly discuss his interpretation of the strikezone.
