Saturday’s loss to the Rangers dropped the Reds to 30-38, the most number of games they have been under .500 for the season. The previous low water mark was seven below .500 at 1-8. Since then, they are 29-30.

The Reds try to avoid the sweep today in the 1:10 p.m. Eastern time series finale at Great American Ball Park.

Sonny Gray 66.2 3.65 3.55 25.7% 9.4%

Originally signed by Texas in 2013, he completed his five-year developmental cycle in the Rangers farm system in 2018 when he was promoted to the big-league club. Gray has been solid in his first year with the Reds, but has been victimized by lack of run support by the offense.

All members of the bullpen should be available today. Amir Garrett and Michael Lorenzen pitched an inning apiece Saturday. Robert Stephenson is back from his rehab assignment at Louisville.

Update on Nick Senzel’s condition after taking a foul ball off his face …

Puig’s PT at the expense of the future is painful to see at this point. Ervin should be out there again without Senzel and he is a better CF option.

    • Seat101

I respectfully disagree. Puig has a hot bat, or so it seems to me.

I think we might have a two hour window for this game.

    • Pete

If Puig stays hot, he is marketable. In the long run, I’d leave him out there. Reds need to acquire additional talent and Puig may bring that – fingers crossed.

      • Seat101

@Pete, I’m with you! Even though it does make it difficult to type

      • Colorado Red

Hopefully, we get a prospect at least as good as what we gave up

      • Hanawi

Josiah Gray is heading toward being a top 100 prospect in all of baseball right now and Jeter Downs is OPSing .800 with 12 homers as a 20 year old SS in A+. Reds aren’t getting that value back.

      • Pete

It would be shame in retrospect if releasing Bailey and eating his entire contract would have been the smart move. Let’s hope Puig catches fire and gets back some of that talent back in return. Dodgers know talent when they see it. Certainly looks like it has the potential to be a major setback.

      • RojoBenjy

A shame is the best way to think of it. No one would have predicted the absolute bad luck that’s come about.

Kemp was arguably the only piece from the trade that realistically didn’t have a fit on the team.

It’s frustrating. Maybe something can be salvaged.

  2. Jim Walker

With BobSteve back and Jose Iglesias on paternity leave, my guess is that in 3 days, either VanMeter or Ervin heads back to AAA for Iglesias to return then the other gets sent back for Scooter’s return which likely is a week or less away unless he has a setback.

While I don’t particularly like watching baseball which has all the pitching changes and double switches, that seems to be the coming strategy. But I wish the Reds could come up with a mix of bullpen arms which could get the job done with 7 guys versus 8 because having that extra position guy on the bench could help them if he was somebody who could hit.

  3. Pete

I agree with you on Rocco Baldelli. If the Reds had an opportunity to employ him, they missed the boat. But tell me how he would get these guys hitting? Seriously, how can they win scoring 0-2 runs a game with an occasional 3 or 4 spot? It seems to me to fundamental. Bell/Williams might not be the right guys and I’m open to this. We could start next year as the first year of a true (Astros) rebuild. Like all here, I could care less about the names, I want the Reds to compete and eventually win a WS.

    • Sliotar

      Spot on, Pete.

I write sometimes that the Reds are “Lovable Losers” …. what the Cubs used to be.

No reason to fall in love with “nice guys” that are always finishing last.

Bell and Williams aren’t going anywhere…they are the future Castellini and Jocketty.

We can only hope they get a little more ruthless in bringing guys up sooner to see if they can play at MLB level, and in cutting guys loose when they can’t.

      Go Redlegs.

  4. DocProc

Note: I think you’ll want to change the title date to June 16 (currently says June 15).

    • TR

I can live with the wrong date if the Reds win today.

  5. Matt Hendley

The house has a few broken windows, so naturally the correct response is to burn the entire house down.

Interesting lineup with iggy celebrating his kid and senzel d2d.

A thought. With the SP being as good as it is and the short bench hurting the team on more then one occasion perhaps returning to a normal alignment once iggy returns will be beneficial

    • Pete

To me, the Reds have been trying to restore an old broken-down house. Maybe it’s time to raze it and build it from the foundation up. For the rest of the season, the team can focus on what the young talent looks like and gauge their potential at the MLB level. I have no problem with this but guys like Votto, Puig, Roark, Gray, DD, Jose Iglesias are not going to be a part of the next competitive team. Get some value in return before it’s too late…

  6. gusnwally

I’m sure that ” will Joey Votto make the HOF ” is a subject that could bring a lively debate. However I think we can all agree Joey has been a superlative hitter for his career. But his time is obviously growing short. But here is a stat that somewhat amazes me. For as great as he has been he still needs 340 hits to reach 2128 hits. Why 2128, that is exactly half of what Pete Rose had. After this brilliant career, getting to half of Pete’s total is not a sure thing. Hard for me to believe but the numbers don’t lie.

    • Klugo

I think that JVs days as 3-4-5 guy are probably gone; but I still like him in the 2 hole. He gets on base.

  7. Klugo

Guess this is what you get when a not so good team plays good teams. Nowhere to hide.

  8. Doug Gray

The game won’t start on time. Next update will be at approximately 1pm.

    • Seat101

Thanks, Doug. And I appreciate the updates from you. As the Reds will use Twitter but not update their website

  9. TR

When the Giants and Dodgers left New York for California in the late 1950’s there was a real threat the Red’s franchise might be moved to NYC. The city fathers stepped forward and that didn’t happen. Because of that threat, the ownership and management of the Reds has, in general, remained in local hands. It’s debatable whether local control has kept the Reds from having more consistent winning teams over the last forty years.

  10. RojoBenjy

A sincere Happy Father’s Day to all you fathers!

  11. earl

Reds ‘Pythagorean won/lost Record’ on Baseball-Reference’s site is currently 37-31. That number is really wacky, you don’t usually see that big a difference. It will probably even out some as the season goes, but it’s all apart of losing a bunch of 1 run games and then winning a handful of blowouts.

  12. RojoBenjy

Nothing but blue sky and sunshine for the last hour, and no more rain forecasted until 1900 hours.

  13. Seat101

Is there something going on with this website? I swear I saw a bunch of comments before I went to make lunch. They’re gone. And apparently the game is still being delayed for no rain.

    • Doug Gray

      A few posts were removed.

Lightning came through about 15 minutes ago.

  14. Doug Gray

Game expected to start at 2:40pm

    • Seat101

      Thank you very much. I’m dealing with a fever of 101, bronchial asthma, a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old and a five-year-old.

They served me breakfast at 11. family recipe called “daddy egg”, now they’re making lunch. At this rate will be making dinner at 10pm.

They have not heard of “clean as you go”.
They forgot to start the dishwasher at 11. There are improvising for kitchen utensils, pots, and pans.

I really need to have a Reds win today.

      • earmbrister

My 12 year old daughter made me blueberry pancakes for breakfast at 1 pm. It was perfect. Ignore the dishes, they’re meaningless.

Hope you’re feeling better soon! Happy Dad’s Day.

  15. Sliotar

    @Doug Gray,

    Why was my post removed?

I referred to Bell and Williams as the next Castellini and Jocketty, meaning the next generation of guys overseeing the Reds.

How is that offensive? Just wondering.

    • Doug Gray

I’m looking in the deleted comments and I don’t see it in there…. so I don’t really know. I didn’t delete any of your comments, and it doesn’t appear that anyone else did, either.

      • Steve Mancuso

Might have been a reply to a comment that was deleted. Wasn’t intended to delete your comment. Sorry. Collateral damage. Feel free to repost it.

  16. Seat101

So it’s groundhogs day, not Father’s Day?

    • VaRedsFan

Exactly….coming to bat in the 1st trailing.

  17. Broseph

Nice gimme by Deshields for Votto’s double. Let’s see if they can take advantage

    • VaRedsFan

Not even Billy played that shallow. Gift accepted.

  18. Sliotar

Puig feeling like he’s back in the groove.

Gave DeShields a little good-bye wave, cruising on third.

Nice job by Peraza, getting the run in.

    • Indy Red Man

Except Peraza swung at 3 straight balls. The rbi is fine, but maybe he drives the ball on the 2-0 count that it would’ve been.

I’ll say it again….JVM is going to be a pretty decent hitter if they find him some playing time!

      • vegastypo

No matter who the Reds bring up, if they just sit on the bench, we’ll never know what they can do.

    • vegastypo

That’s the one thing Peraza doesn’t do is strike out very much. Feared the double play, but glad he got Puig in.

      • Sliotar

        Same here, Vegas.

It feels like Peraza is the old “slap hitting middle IF” that was accepted years ago, but not as much now.

    • ma

Actually a SAC Fly removes the AB. So he is actually 0-0 right now.

      • vegastypo

Seat knows that, Ma. He’s mocking people who aren’t impressed with Peraza ….

  19. vegastypo

TV crew talking about how long it’s been since Winker homered? Well, gee, maybe if got to play somewhat consistently, good things could happen.

    And as I type this, a two-run double !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. doofus

Nice. Winker rips a double to CF, plating two!

What is the deal on Winker. Have I missed something? Why is he not playing regularly?

    • VaRedsFan

.152/.222/.152 vs. lefties. He earned his demotion to platoon guy

      • vegastypo

Thanks for the stats, but do you just quit playing him against lefties? Or say that’s his career arc? If platooning gets the team a few extra wins, whoopee, but gotta look beyond this season.

      • VaRedsFan

My guess is they are still trying to win, when that changes, maybe he will get more regular looks.

  21. Sliotar

I look forward to the days when Da Wink actually plays everyday, whenever that may be.

    • Indy Red Man

Winker and JVM have the right approach. Not afraid to take a walk. Not afraid to go down 1-2 in the count if the pitcher hits the corners on them. Doesn’t mean they’ll make it, but the opposite hackmaster approach most assuredly means they won’t hack it. I like Farmer too. JVM, Farmer, Ervin, Blandino, and Barnhart makes a good bench imo. No place for DD and Scooter both though? Are you going to block Winker with a 30 yr old DD? Somebody has to go.

  22. Seat101

    @Ma & @VegasTypo

Happy Father’s Day Ma. And happy Father’s Day to you too Vegas.

Please allow me my little jest/jape. But if I say something nice about José Peraza I get mugged in broad daylight.

Anyway, both Wenker and Puig look like they are tuned in. Joey’s penultimate at-bat? He look like he was going to club somebody with that bat.

But don’t worry Razer going to hit three homeruns today at least

    • vegastypo

Happy Father’s Day to you also, Seat, and I hope you survive your family’s ‘assault’ on your household !!!!

  23. VaRedsFan

Gray vs. Delino. He was ahead 0-2, then threw 3 pitches nowhere near the zone. Guys that want to pitch deeper in games need to stop wasting pitches. at least make it close enough to chase. He got the K eventually.

  24. Seat101

Perhaps will get a reprise of the 2012 (?) Mother’s Day game where after a long delay the Reds win in the bottom of the 10th (?) with a walk off homer by Joey Votto

  25. Indy Red Man

Wow….atleast 5 games now where they’ve jumped ahead with their best 2 starters Castillo/Gray and then give it right back. Those hurt. Roark really battles, but they never overcame the 2 unearned in the 1st last night. You think a team with so many guys in their prime would be better fundamentally? Smarter?

  26. vegastypo

Coming into today, Dietrich was hitting .175 since May 29, 0 homers and only 2 doubles among his mere 7 hits. Exposed?

    • Indy Red Man

Went pull crazy! He’s a good hitter…..not as good as Scooter, but able to do some damage once he got out of Miami. I think he had a .850 road ops lifetime coming into this year….something like that

  27. Indy Red Man

5-3 Rockies in the 1st inning. 16-12 the other night. Old Coors is back. I picked up McMahon yesterday to go with Story/Dahl in fbb. They each went 3-4

  28. vegastypo

Wow, Pweeeeeeeg with the bomb. I keep hearing that he is being beat by fastballs, but that fastball ain’t coming back !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. Indy Red Man

I guess thats why we watch & root. See our pitcher hit a triple and then the forgotten man pick up 4 rbis by the 4th inning. I’m not saying WInker has to play every day, but its too early to write him off vs lefties? Look at how Scooter picked it last year vs LHP and he’s got 3-4 years on WInker. Alot of it is personal confidence…..and you get more of that when the manager has confidence in you.

  30. Wayne nabors

puig is really heating up,glad to see that

  31. VaRedsFan

Puig exits the yard at 106.7 mph

  32. Seat101

And I don’t want to get too enthused yet. But we have a good chance of winning this game.

I did predict that we would hit three homeruns today. That predictions looking pretty good I also said that Wenker and Puig we’re looking good. I was right.

I better stop now before I hurt my arm Patting myself on the back.

  33. matt hendley

Puig walking around covered in gasoline and holding a lit match, cause he is about to be on fire.
    WInker breaks the Drought.
DD comming soon, very hard hit just missed balls.

Pirates have won though so the tie for last will continue for another day.

Peraza over here hurting people now.

  34. Don

this must be Reds day as Barnhardt walks, Pereza has stats of a good ball player. He is going to get at least 3 starts in a row. Hope they can gold on.
Gray out after 5 with 90 pitches. At least Peralta can’t come in today.

  35. Indy Red Man

Texas is in contention. What about dealing them DD and Hernandez for reliever LeClerc and prospect(s)? 149 career innings with 82 hits allowed and he’s 25! He could be the Reds closer or key set-up for the next 6-7 years! Sometimes you catch teams overpaying for being in contention. Look at the Pirates last year….they were on a hot streak and thought Archer would put them over the top. TB took advantage!

    • vegastypo

For that matter, if Pence is going to be out for significant time, I’d see if they’re interested in Puig, too.

      • Indy Red Man

Don’t you think we need Puig? He can make GABP look like a little league field when he’s on. Hitting and throwing. I know he’s been terrible for most of the season, but where else can we get RH power that likes Cincinnati and has his kind of potential?

      • vegastypo

I don’t trust Puig’s lack of discipline. Perhaps it’s from living near LA and hearing about his difficulties in the clubhouse as well, but he just seems like a guy who is gonna wear out his welcome somewhat quickly if things don’t go his way.

  36. Seat101

I’m watching on game day. Was that intentional?

    • vegastypo

I really don’t think it was intentional. Looked like a pitch that started more toward the plate, then rode in toward Puig. … Welsh is opining that with the year Shelby Miller is having, he probably doesn’t know what area code the ball will end up in when he throws a pitch.

  37. RojoBenjy

Been a fun game so far.

If Puig has flipped a switch that will be a balm for some sore fans.

I’ll even eat crow on Peraza if he turns it around.

But i’m no longer expecting too much, in order to avoid disappointment. Just my coping mechanism lol.

    • Roger Garrett

I have no problem with Peraza playing every day.I didn’t last year or the year before but it can’t be in place of any outfielder at any time.Ervin,Senzel and Winker need to play every day period. We need to find out right now and this year if they are the outfield of the next several years.I believe they can be just that and will at the least be average or better offensively. These guys are 26,23,and 25 years old so why on earth would we not play them.Old news but Puig will not be here next year and so maybe we win a game or two less with Puig setting.Who cares and can you imagine what it would do confidence wise for those 3 guys.

      • Old-school

@Roger agree 100%. I would only say wait 3 weeks. The reds have about a 3% chance of making the playoffs and Puig is starting to hit .. a month late and about $4 million short. The reds play Astros and Brewers and Cubs. Things will sort themselves out by July 1. Puig could be traded and his $5 million could go towards an Iglesias extension or better yet, a Castillo signing bonus.

Then yes, Winker Senzel and Ervin start everyday after the All star break. They have to be centerpieces in 2020.

        Great offensive day today. Finally.

  38. burtgummer

So why does Bell put a good pitcher (Hughes) in a game that’s a blowout but in a close game he insists on putting in pitcher who um well isn’t good(Peralta)

    • vegastypo

This is only Hughes’ 4th appearance in June — 3 1/3 IP in 3 innings. The guy has to pitch sometime. And he’s not left-handed.

      • burtgummer

        Peralta opposing rh hitters .268
        lh hitters .256

        Hughes rh hitters .240
        lh hitters .111

  39. Roger Garrett

Yeah its only one at bat but Ervin just had an 8 pitch at bat in a 11-3 ball game and he singled and Winker just got his 4th straight hit.Sure they will have bad games and bad at bats but so does everybody else.Just stop this silliness and let these young guys play so we don’t have to talk about if they can or can’t next year and beyond. If they aren’t going to let them play then trade em or release em and move on,

  40. Roger Garrett

Please remove Suarez and now David Bell.He needs some time off and his body language says he has already left the field.Never took the bat off his shoulder and K’d on 4 pitches in a 11-3 game and is now 0-5.Not calling him out or placing blame just saying he ain’t helping.Should have gave that at bat to somebody else cause he didn’t want it.

    • Roger Garrett

Thank you David Bell.Shows you saw what we saw.Good job

      • RojoBenjy

I have not been liking Suarez’s seeming lack of hustle lately. Wonder what’s going on.

  41. Roger Garrett

Welcome back Bob Steve hitting 96 on the gun and still got that wipe out slider.Odor heard it up in the zone but I don’t think he saw it.
