The Cincinnati Reds (16-22) will continue their Bay Area road trip against the San Francisco Giants (16-21) tonight at 10:15 PM. The Reds and Giants just split a wild four-game series last weekend, and will play their final games of 2019 against each other this weekend.

Starting Pitchers

Luis Castillo is top 10 in the MLB in ERA, FIP and fWAR entering play on Friday. Castillo’s last start came against the Giants on Sunday. He took a no-hitter in the 6th, but he gave up 4 runs in the inning, including a 2-run home run to Buster Posey to tie the game. Castillo has a career 3.29 ERA in 2 starts against the Giants.

Dereck Rodriguez has not been able to match his breakout 2018 season so far in 2019. He has got hit hard this season, including allowing 9 home runs already. The Reds hit 4 of those home runs off him last Saturday and charged him with 8 ER on the night.

Starting Lineup

Reds Giants
1. Nick Senzel (CF)
2. Joey Votto (1B)
3. Eugenio Suarez (3B)
4. Jesse Winker (LF)
5. Yasiel Puig (RF)
6. Derek Dietrich (2B)
7. Jose Iglesias (SS)
8. Luis Castillo (P)
9. Tucker Barnhart (C)
1. Joe Panik (2B)
2. Stephen Vogt (C)
3. Evan Longoria (3B)
4. Brandon Belt (1B)
5. Mac Williamson (RF)
6. Brandon Crawford (SS)
7. Tyler Austin (LF)
8. Steven Duggar (CF)
9. Dereck Rodriguez (P)

Conclusion

The Reds will come home after this weekend and play 12 of their next 18 games at GABP. The Reds are just 7-14 on the road this season, but they are 9-8 at home. It would be nice to see the Reds continue to beat up on Giants pitching this weekend and head home with some “positive momentum.” The Cubs play the Brewers and the Cardinals play the Pirates this weekend, so any wins will help the Reds climb the standings. Go Reds!

The starters tonight have .185 home run average against Pudge Jr!

  2. Eric the Red

The batting order makes sense! Now leave the first 4 spots alone, unless/until Votto has to go on the IL for his back. Go Reds!

  3. Sliotar

This one stat defines why the Reds are in the situation they are in …. creating a feeling that 2 of 3 is a minimum number of wins this weekend:

wRC+ of 72 vs. RHP (29th in MLB)

Rodriguez may look better than he really is if this trend continues tonight.

It boggles the mind that it is the case… but here we are.

    Go Redlegs.

    • Sliotar

Actually, the 72 wRC+ vs. RHP is tied for 28th … with the Indians.

The Heart of It All state apparently doesn’t mean having a heart of a lineup…or any other part.

  4. Klugo

Running out of reasons to play Peraza.

  5. matthew hendley

Solid lineup. MLB lineups must have misprinted earlier cause I could have sworn that they had had Puig in Center. Hope the reds sweep, defenatly think they should win.

  6. Centerfield

This is the lineup and batting order I would like to see for about 5 days in a row. Bell needs to stop tinkering and just “let ’em play.”

  7. Curt

I posted previously Puig should be batting 6th so 5th is at least a start. My lineup would be:

    1. Senzel
    2. Iglesias
    3. Winker
    4. Suarez
    5. Votto
    6. Puig
    7. Dietrich
    8. Barnhart
    9. Castillo

I forget the reasoning behind batting the pitcher 8th but in that case just flip-flop.

Also, for a variety of reasons I think I would start Van Meter instead of Dietrich at 2nd and bat him in the same 7 spot.

Just entertaining myself 🙂 Go Reds!

    • matthew hendley

You would sit a guy who had homeruns in 5 of the last 7 games? for a guy with 1 MLB hit?

      • Seat101

Why are you always so confrontational? He was tossing out an idea that he said would amuse himself.

You were so not amused that you had to confront him.

Lighten up, please. It’s more fun that way

      • Curt

Ha, crazy isn’t it? In my head I’m trying to rebuild the team, I’d like to know sooner than later what The Meter can do. I also think Dietrich is our best clutch pinch-hitter and don’t really view it as him “sitting”. He’ll get in there and probably gets the game winning hit.
Just having fun MH Go Reds!

      • Seat101

I am sure you will find plenty to complain about for the rest of the game. Right now why don’t you enjoy what seems to be a fun and interesting baseball game?

  8. Patrick Jeter

Consecutive walks to start the game for Castillo. You east coasters may be in for a long one…

  9. Indy Red Man

SF has no talent. NONE. NOTHING. This bs is unacceptable?

They blew a 8 run lead and then you’re 4 hitters deep into the game and its 4-0 with your ace on the mound…blow that game too?

Then should be determined tonite….thats as a bad of a 4 game split as anyone will ever have. If this was an equally bad Reds team like 2017 then it wouldn’t be an issue, but this Reds team has a good amount of talent.

    • matthew hendley

Pitchers not practicing SAC Bunting is dumb. Pitchers batting has been the way it has been since the beginning of the National League. It should not be a shock to anyone. Absolutley against a DH in the NL.

  10. matthew hendley

Castillo needs SAC Bunting practice, and Iggy may be hurt, honestly thought that he was safeback at the bag

  11. matthew hendley

Look at that, Barnhart got a hit . And an RBI.

  12. Indy Red Man

No replay and the Reds get nothing. Wasn’t even close either

  13. matthew hendley

Reds getting it started. Fan rule double. lets keep it going.

  14. Indy Red Man

Back to Castillo’s bunt attempt for a second. I’m guessing Belt was about 45-50 feet away when the ball got to the bat. Some 1B is going to die doing that crap? Rizzo is the worst….he comes within 30 feet away?

I think it was the Rangers that had a minor league 3rd base coach get hit and killed in a game about 15 years ago. Its going to happen again.

    • matthew hendley

Mike Coolbaugh is the name. A 1st base coach hit in the head on a butcher boy play. Died at the hospital.

      • Indy Red Man

Its nuts? Even a scrub hitter like Castillo is still a grown man with alot of athletic ability. He’s capable of hitting a hard line drive. A pitcher almost has to swing because the 1B is so close and Barnhart is usually the guy on 1st?

    • CP

Nah, the NL adopting the DH is pretty much inevitable at this point and there will be no going back. The sac bunt is already dying, but these obvious sac bunt attempts will basically be eliminated as a result.

  15. matthew hendley

either errors of defensive miscues on the LF,CF,C and SS. Can the reds take advantage of them all. Will the giants complete the team screwups? we will see.

  16. Indy Red Man

I predicted Puig to hit 35 and steal 20. It might end up the other way around? I like his aggressiveness on the bases, but he did get thrown out at 3rd w/2 outs not along ago. I like him, but I wish he’d move closer to the plate? I’m sure Turner Ward knows more then I do about hitting, but its too easy to get him out by pitching him away? If he crowded the plate more then he could really drive the ball on the outer corner. Of course he could get jammed more easily, but pitchers just don’t enjoy coming inside to 250 lb monsters. I think he’d become much more dangerous!

  17. matthew hendley

looking good today, multiple players on base more then once. Senzel 2 hit game so far.

  18. VaRedsFan

they were giving Winker an rbi bunt single… ground out to 2nd

  19. WVRedlegs

I had to get my Cuban Spanish to English dictionary out.
    Yasiel translates to O-fer.

    • steve stevens

And Votto in Canadian is O-fer too.

      • matthew hendley

Both of you are wrong. Puigs had a hit and Votto has walked twice.

  20. Old-school

Ace Castillo doesn’t get rattled. He’s going to start the All star game.

    • Sliotar

That’s an Ace mentality right there.

Didn’t give in to Belt, really only threat in Giants lineup.

It was Castillo’s 5th walk, but no matter. He went after Williamson next and struck him out.

Awesome stuff to watch from a pitcher in a Reds uniform.

  21. matthew hendley

Everyone needs to work on their drag bunting. If these insane shifts continue, need to bunt against them to correct the infield.

    • WVRedlegs

You are correct, except for one thing. Push bunts beat the shift better than a drag bunt.

  22. VaRedsFan

    Good stuff Luis!!!!
Now the bullpen has to cover the final 3.
SF pulled that big comeback on us…but the also came back from 7-0 down to the Rockies yesterday. Put them away boys.

  23. Old-school

Castillo projections 1/4 of the way through the season amazing. He is looking at 200 innings and 15+ wins and 200k . He is a bonafied ace.

  24. Ethan L

Duke has got to go. Garbage in, garbage out.

  25. Old-school

Zach Duke is a loogie who can’t get lefties out. Cody Reed time on Tuesday against the Cubs. DFA Duke. No other choice.

    • Ethan L

Do you think they’ll actually DFA him?

  26. VaRedsFan

Duke doing his best to blow this.
    Needs a bailout

  27. Curt

I had to step out for few. What happened? Why did they take Castillo out?

    • Old-school

Castillo threw over 100 pitches. He’s still walking too many. Not yet Cy young conversation because of the walks. Clean that up.

  28. Ethan L

Why don’t these guys focusing on winning and being consistent rather than looking foolish with goofy hairdos? Suarez looks like a skunk. Get a normal haircut, take out the earrings, and win some games. Cut the nonsense!

    • matthew hendley

all right Marge Schott. Lets go ahead and scare all the FA away.

      • Wayne nabors

        Reds don’t sign free agents

      • matthew hendley

Well their not with that attitude.

      • gusnwally

Wayne, are you discounting Iggy and Derek D.

  29. Jeff Morris

Zach Duke causing problems again and giving Reds stress. Need to have Cody Reed in the bullpen as a left handed reliever. Need to DFA Duke. Wayyy past time to do this.

  30. Old-school

I’m neutral on the shift and awaiting judgment- but Jose iglesias just threw out brandon belt from right center field and iglesias and Suarez continue to really play a solid left side of the infield. Iglesias may just be a weapon wherever you put him.

  31. Hanawi

Lorenzen has been sneakily really solid this year. Only one game giving up any runs in his last 13. It was the unfortunate 12-11 loss, but has still been strong.

  32. Ethan L

Votto has -0.3 fWAR and a wRC+ of 78. Is ittime to give Farmer some more PT?

  33. Old-school

Puig!!! Don’t look now but the redlegs are about to have back to back shutouts and have saved this season and road trip. Finish strong and get back to GABP for some summer offensive fireworks. Tanner Roarck and Luis Castillo saved the season.

  34. matthew hendley

FIrst game in recient memeory that Bell has had no problems with his Bullpen usage. Let LC go 6. only good reliever used was Lorenzen. other good relievers are saved for tomorrow or later.

  35. matthew hendley

Good win by the reds. Senzel with the bat, so did a couple others. While runs were only in one inning the effort and success of getting on base was throughout the game. Castillo on lockdown. I would have not thought he would of gotten out of some of the issues he was in.
Votto on base 3 times tonight. OBP is going up.
Suarez, Puig Barnhart, Iggy with the hits. votto, DD with the walks.
For those of you that wanted to talk crap about Ofers, you all misspelled Winker.

    • steve stevens

You certainly need to take a chill pill pal. Since the beginning of the thread you are the one that have talked crap and get called out for it from other posters. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion and like it or not has to be treated with respect.
