Did everyone enjoy the off day? Good. I spent it eating 27 jellybeans and two pieces of celery for dinner because I understand that balanced eating is just fuel for my workouts. Today I passed the morning driving around the city buying 50% off Easter candy.

I’m not exaggerating on this. I take my priorities and Fawn’s dark chocolate covered Oreos very seriously. Started at Kroger’s for a sheet cake and gum, hit up Fawn’s, then made it to Supreme Candy and Nut. Also next Lent I’m giving up radioactive soil remediation instead of sugar.

In less important news, the Reds begin a three-game series against the Braves today. They are back home after a semi-disastrous road trip which could have been more disastrous but still wasn’t the good clean kind of three-way fun Skyline brings, either. It’s kind of like how today I found out that an essay I submitted for publication wasn’t accepted, but one of the editors wrote me a personal note to let me know they liked parts of it, but not enough of the whole thing to give me money for it. In writerdom that’s called “the personal rejection” and is considered a moral victory because while you haven’t made any money, a human being took the time to tell you why. So when Josh The Pilot called to find out how my day was going, I passed along the excellent tidings that I was not getting published.

Enjoy the fact, then, that the Reds are back from the road trip. I guess.

Mr. Votto is back in the lineup after sitting out due to oldness. But the biggest update is that Matt Kemp is on the DL with a broken rib with Erving called up to replace him. Here’s John Fay announcing on Twitter that Matt Kemp is on the DL with a broken rib with Erving called up to replace him:

If you want me to call it the “IL,” we’ve already discussed this.

Starting Pitchers

Sonny Gray 2.79 0.93 19.1 22 0 3
Kevin Gausman 2.75 0.76 19.2 22 1 1

Sonny Gray is pitching for the Reds. Gray was also pitching the last time I wrote a game thread and I used up my picture of Don Johnson in a pastel jacket. That’s all I got.

Remember how in the 80’s the Braves home games were on TBS and that always wreaked havoc with watching the sitcoms they’d otherwise show in the afternoon? And how all the shows on TBS started at five past and 35 past the hour?

That was stupid.

I’m proud that I am a fan of a baseball team which does not use a bullpen cart. It’s about as dignified as a dachshund with its leg in the air.

News and Notes

My man on the ground at Great American Ball Park, in the form of my nephew standing around by the fence, just texted to inform me that he heard Joey Votto drop an f-bomb during batting practice.

Can we post RLN writers game thread post records? Mitsoff is winning. Marlins write ups get an asterisk. I like this lineup. Go Reds.

    • Pete

Yup, if Mary Beth brings home another W, I say no rest for her until the Reds suffer a defeat. Let’s find out if this lady is a true-blue fan. Somethings are more important than work.

      • Mary Beth Ellis

I mean I have no reason to leave the house now that there are Oreos in it, so…

  2. matt hendley

As I singlehandedly Predicted 2 days ago…Ervin Lovers have been mollified, with his call up to replace the injured Matt Kemp. The same play that ‘everyone catches’, well nobody catches the ball while simultaneously breaking their rib. Neither here or there. Winker will be the biggest benefactor. Senzel should beat Kemp back to the Big Leagues and Kemp can use the Rehab starts to get himself right against AAA Pitching.

Lineup looks solid, and its Gray on the mound so it could be a good game. I like the lineup and will be interested to see how Perazza performs from the 9 spot. Dude has more chances then anyone

    • Steven Ross

What about Schebler? Hasn’t he has many chances as Peraza? What about Puig? He’s had a ton of chances. Winker? This list is long. Now let’s see Ervin replace Schebler in CF and get on with it.

      • matt hendley

if we were just talking this year maybe…we are not…. Peraza problems are 2+ years and counting. 2 years ago Schebler hit 30 HR despite being injured. WInker is already coming around. Puig will produce and was a perennial All-star in LA. Peraza has lost his Job twice. Don’t act for a minute that this is some magical issue that showed up this year. His bat is hot garbage, his glove not much better

      • matt hendley

You were saying something about Puig? WInker?

    • Mary Beth Ellis

Scooter just did a brief interview on the Reds’ Twitter account. He hasn’t even started physical therapy yet.

There’s a ways to go to let them fight it out.

    • matt hendley

Definate problems with the Home plate umpire not even consistent with his calls. Looks like a Swing alot game

    • Mary Beth Ellis

I want to party with those guys in the horse heads

  3. Preach

Is that a reflective surface in the Braves catchers mask? Sure is annoying to look at

(And yes, Im too lazy to use ‘s tonight)

    Oh, and PUIG!!!!!!!

  4. Mark Moore

And just like that, the Reds were up 2 runs thanks to MBE.

“It’s about as dignified as a dachshund with its leg in the air.” What a line!!

    • Mary Beth Ellis

      thank you…
but no credit please until this game is done.
      The score is too tipsy.

  5. VaRedsFan

Puig with a monster shot. Love it when a player attacks the 1st pitch “get me over” fastball

  6. Indy Red Man

Puig 2nd deck and didn’t get his arms extended. He should hit atleast 33-35 for many years with the Reds….20+ at gabp like Frazier used to do.

  7. Old-school

Puig with the fence scraper….. Or maybe not. Votto k terrible call… 2 inches high.

  8. Ronald Stone

Man that ump missed two calls in that inning the reds would still be batting.

  9. matt hendley

SHould be 3 nothing right now. (votto walks knocked in by puig HR) Schebler also should be on base… i dont see iglesias homering though

  10. matt hendley

For the record that is a American League pitcher that dropped that perfect bunt. There is no reason the rest of the pitchers cant.

  11. Indy Red Man

Why is Peraza playing over DD?

  12. matt hendley

And that is the danger of the Peraza hit. You dont know its a hit until its too late. Cant blame Votto there, if he had taken off and it was caught….and dude was sprinting

    • Seat101

I’m sure that it will make you happy that Peraza has not had a hit yet

      • matt hendley

I know, its the type of hit Peraza makes

  13. Preach

Hey, he’s consistent about calling it a strike. Keep throwing it high.

  14. matt hendley

*phone rings* LaRosses, How can we help you….. *answer* Start the Ovens

  15. matt hendley

  16. matt hendley

Iggy 2-2 taking advantage of the absence of Scooter. On fire lately

  17. VaRedsFan

4 innings 51 pitches with 8 K’s. Which is proof you don’t have to have a high pitch count, even if you strike guys out. Don’t waste pitches, just because you are ahead in the count.

  18. Old-school

This just in.Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray are really good. Get Alex Wood healthy.

    • matt hendley

Wood throwing a Side bullpen this weekend. If no Issues will start Rehab assignments

  19. matt hendley

I will admit I had questions when the Reds made the Gray trade. Those have been answered now. Dude looks like a Top of the Line guy

  20. Indy Red Man

I don’t that I can remember a triple on a ground ball down the 3rd base line? Tip of the cap to Swanson for that hustle. Very rare any more

Scary game because they’re explosive and could get things turned around vs Sonny in an instant. Meanwhile the Reds are leaving men on base instead of leading 6 to 1

  21. matt hendley

Senzel litterally just started Triple A tongiht…view it as a Rehab start. Assume he will be ready soon

  22. WVRedlegs

Man, Schebler with his 3rd K. He has as many K’s as he does AB’s. That is an exaggeration, but not by much. Schebler had 3 or 4 K’s in one of the SD games too.

  23. Indy Red Man

Why was Winker almost in CF???

What are they doing?????? Donaldson never pulls the ball? Its not Gray is Chapman in his prime? That is complete insane?

  24. Indy Red Man

That ball was sky high??? No reason the LF shouldn’t have that in his back pocket? If it was Barry Bonds then I get the shift, but that was idiotic?

    • VaRedsFan

Must have been in the same place when Swanson got that triple

  25. Indy Red Man

    Baby breakdown
Go ahead and give it to me
Breakdown honey take me through the night
Breakdown now I’m standin’ here can’t you see
    Breakdown it’s all right

  26. matt hendley

Multiple manager failures… Winker should not have been placed where he was. Everybody and there mother can see that Gray hit the wall. Bell needed to pull him. If we lose its on him.

    • matt hendley

In fact the OF would be better off playing Position neutral positions. That would have been an out if it had happend. Reds are at least hitting the ball a little better today. 2 missed walks by the Ump and this could have still been a Reds lead

  27. VaRedsFan

Puig…throws to the wrong base. I’m guessing that guy scores from 3rd here in a minute. Mental error.

    • matt hendley

negitive, trying to keep the game tied. I would have thrown it home too, if I had his arm. Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.

      • VaRedsFan

Freeman maybe can only beat Votto in a foot race… still beat it by a mile.

  28. Indy Red Man

I give Swanson some credit too. They were getting dominated, but he kept his head in the game and realized Winker & Co. were taking a double for granted. That kind of stuff can spark a team. You could see it coming

    • VaRedsFan

Same with Acuna busting it down the line when Suarez bobbled. Hustling doesn’t cost a dime.

  29. matt hendley

Robert Stephenson causerizes the wound, and throws a pizza to everyone in the stands as well.

  30. VaRedsFan

Now THAT’S relief!! Nice stuff Stephenson

  31. Indy Red Man

Stephenson!!! The only problem with him is that his stuff is so good that they need him in the rotation? To me….you put most guys in the rotation until they prove otherwise? Maybe the pen is his spot, but its not like they expect a big future out of Disco and Roark. BobSteve has much better stuff then Mahle too

  32. matt hendley

Detrich putting on a clinic, 8 spot perfect on bunts right now. I swear if Peraza GBDP in this I may have a heart attack

    • VaRedsFan

He saved your heart!!!!! You owe him

      • matt hendley

Ok…. I’ll Get off his but for the next 24

  33. VaRedsFan

Finally!!!! someone got that bunt shift single…awesome DD.

  34. Preach

I like scoring runs other ways beside the long ball

  35. matt hendley

out of the frying pan……. for Ervin

  36. VaRedsFan

We’ll see if this button that Bell is pushing with Ervin works

    • matt hendley

This Walk thing does seem to work Wonders.

  37. matt hendley

Puig almost with GS and a 2 homer day. 3 RBI day

  38. Old-school

Bell won the 6 the inning despite appearing he lost it at first

    • matt hendley

True, corrected some issues and got the lead back. However needs to be prepared for the Gray collapse… Notes for the Future I guess…. notice how the reds look better when they walk more

  39. Indy Red Man

Nice response from the Reds! No justice for Sonny Gray….he was outstanding!!

  40. Mark Moore

Puig just missed that one, didn’t he? And I loved the hustle of Dietrich rounding 3rd and scoring. Glad those videos were up on Gameday already.

Could the Mary Beth Charm be working?

    • Mary Beth Ellis

I wish the Mary Beth Charm worked on bartenders and credit collectors.

  41. VaRedsFan

1st run of the year by Peralta. Hopefully it just stays at the 1

    • matt hendley

statistically unlikely, How about, hope run number 2 is in late May?

      • VaRedsFan

I was talking about this game….but yeah….1 run every 5 weeks will do.

  42. Preach

Hernandez painting the black with that offspeed stuff. Nasty

  43. matt hendley

Brave announcers (must listen due to blackout restrictions) talking about Sky line Rally chilli?

  44. Preach

Hughes keeps throwing it all over the place. He will walk you if you are patient

  45. Indy Red Man

Bell? Lorenzen is fine as long as you don’t bring him in with runners on? Leaving Hernandez in would’ve been good? Hughes looks washed up….righty version of Duke

Call them the Duke and Hazzard?

    • matt hendley

Not quite, Hughes is a little better then Duke. Got himself to Lefty, garret gets him out, Turns it over to Rasiel I. Lorenzen held for emergency long man

  46. matt hendley

Out in the middle of the woods…..STRANDED

  47. matt hendley

vindicated on the homer bailey trade….didnt make it into the second against tampa bay 4 walks 4 ER

  48. matt hendley

Obviously the braves missed the bunting clinic

  49. Old-school

Umm..Michael Lorenzen can catch a fly ball when it matters

      • Mary Beth Ellis

That, of course, is the important part.

  50. Old-school

Reds win. Beat a good team. Go reds

    • Gonzo Reds

We look like a team that is a CF and a middle infielder away from being competitive. Anyone know of any CF or middle infielder we can scrounge up from somewhere soon? 😉 Scheb and Peraza… time to go somewhere else…

  51. Indy Red Man

Thats a must win….can’t blow a game like that? Iggy hung that breaking ball but Donaldson missed it by a half inch

  52. Mark Moore

That’ll do … fudge covered Oreo’s all around!

    Thanks again, MBE.

    • Mary Beth Ellis

I think I’m done for this day on the sugar

  53. matt hendley

Lorenzen’s first catch, where a miss ruins the game. good job. need one more. got it. Reds have won 4 of 5. NLC central is only 4 games apart from 1st to last .

  54. matt hendley

Reds looked like a real team last night. Votto 3 walks didn’t strike out. Puig with the bomb and nearly a slam. Ervin Still producing in his 1st At bats every game. Pitching important where it counted. Gray looks like a guy that is dominant until he falls off a cliff. Will be something to monitor in the future. When he falls of the cliff it is real bad. Lorenzen with the critical out. Schebler….. yea… in all fairness he should have walked in his first at-bat. Is it my imagination or are the Umps worse than usual this year. Mary Beth keeps her streak alive. Got to win at least one more against the Braves.
