The Cincinnati Reds (55-70) had their three game win streak snapped last night to late rally by the Milwaukee Brewers (70-57). The two teams will square off again tonight at 8:10 PM. The Brewers are now 0.5 games ahead for the first wild-card spot after last nights win, but there are four teams within 2.5 games of them.

Starting Pitchers

Sal Romano couldn’t make it out of the second inning in his last start against the Indians, as he allowed 6 ER. He had pitched fairly well prior to that. Romano has a 7.43 ERA in 3 career starts against the Brewers.

Junior Guerra also got roughed up in his last outing, allowing 6 ER in 3.2 innings against the Cubs. He has a career 5.02 ERA in 5 starts against the Reds, but has pitched well this year: 2 GS, 11.2 IP, 4 ER, 4 BB, 13 K, 3.09 ERA.

  1. That lineup is worth printing.

  2. 1. Billy Hamilton (S) CF
    2. Phillip Ervin (R) LF
    3. Scooter Gennett (L) 2B
    4. Eugenio Suarez (R) SS
    5. Mason Williams (L) RF
    6. Tucker Barnhart (S) C
    7. Dilson Herrera (R) 3B
    8. Brandon Dixon (R) 1B
    9. Sal Romano (L) P

  3. Interested to see how Suarez handles SS.

  4. If I made Hamitlon fans grouchy in the recap last night, my apologies.

I freely admit I hope 2019 is the last season of Hamilton and Bailey with the Reds, but having Hamilton leadoff vs. a RHP is literally giving away the first out of the game.

    Batting 1st, vs. RHP

    2018 – 4 for 30, 13Ks, 3BBs, 0 SB, wRC+ 29
Small sample size? Maybe. But, he was only wRC+ 78 in 2017 across a full season in same spot

If I know this, imagine how the Brewers aren’t laughing in the dugout, getting a probable edge like that while they are fighing for a playoff spot.

And, the Reds leading the league in bunting this year. Yikes.

This is the same stuff we saw with the last manager.

We all want the same thing…for the Next Good Reds Team to arrive.

    Go Redlegs.

    • I’ve got one more thing. I want to win the lottery the day after my divorce is final

    • +1000

    • Its not the first out for me but rather he will get more at bats then actual hitters will. The Brewers should be laughed out by now after 5 years of this nonsense. But because I love Billy I hope he gets on 5 times tonight.

  5. Positives for me in this game: Ervin (LF), Suarez (SS), and Herrera (3B).

  6. SLIOTAR – I think a lot of people were cranky yesterday. So I wouldn’t worry too much if you feel like people came back at you really hard w/out actually refuting you.

Jim Walker A lot of us really enjoy your previews and occasional recaps. And that was a great Pink Floyd reference yesterday

    • Thanks, Seat.

When this team is good, really good, again….we should have a RLN Day and celebrate surviving this rebuild, and I will be freely buying beers or sodas.

I am cranky, too. I am jealous of teams playing for something and it’s not even September.

The Mariners beat the Astros on a 8th inning HR last night, and it was like Seattle had won the World Series in that stadium. Seattle hasn’t even made the playoffs since 2001, and I am still jealous.

      • I know what you mean. My biggest aggravation is with the interim manager. Tactically it’s wise to keep him until the end of season. There’s been enough uproar and dislocation.I firmly believe they are not going to hire him as manager, So, strategically it makes sense also to wait until the end of the season to go through the proper hiring process. A process which will not end up with him being hired as a manager.

But it’s frustrating as heck to watch him mismanage this team.

I think we all have the same complaints we just put them in a different order.

Lineups and bunts are my bètes noire.

  7. Yu darvish out for the season. #1 FA pitcher never pitched. He was awful for a reason at the end of last season. No huge contracts to guys over 30.

    • The Cubs got Daniel Murphy after making it through waivers. Maybe they can get Harvey also

    • I’m just glad to see the Nats waving the white flag after what they did to Votto. Schadenfreude. And maybe Karma. Only way better would be if they weren’t able to make the decision until after August 31.

  8. Peraza(CF)
    Winker(LF)
    Votto(1B)
    Suarez(SS)
    Schebler(RF)
    Senzel(3B)
    Herrera(2B)
    Casali(C)
    P

    Now were talking.

  9. Man its just so obvious which team is on pace for 90 wins. One day we will get there.

  10. Romano? You would think he would be relaxed since no matter how bad he is they won’t send him down? He sucks. He’s never even been good in the minors? 3.50 at AA impressed them so much he’s been with the Reds ever since pretty much? He has nothing!!!! Give someone else a chance!!!

  11. Its just bad when its over after the first inning.

  12. Dilson’s 1st chance…not so good

  13. 3 spot in the 3rd makes it interesting again.

    • Spoke too soon. Romano change of speeds is 92 to 86 for his change. It’s pitched on the outside corner and still deposited in the seats. It’s an awful pitch, easy to see why all he does is movement and placement.

He looks like a good middle reliever nothing more. This season has proven it. I don’t care if he can throw 250 innings a season if he can break an era of 5

  14. Nobody really hit the ball hard in that inning, but it was still nice to see. The thing I like about Ervin is that he can pull the ball or he can go the other way and it looks very natural. He’s a keeper offensively! Even Billy’s swing looks decent right now!

Put Lorenzen in and we can finally beat these guys.

  15. Love seeing Suarez back at SS. He made a pretty nice grab (and flubbed almost the exact same chance the next batter), but overall he looks pretty assured there, which makes sense given he came up as a SS.

Suarez at SS, Senzel at 3B, Peraza in CF, let everyone else duke it out for 2B. Lots of problems solved right there.

  16. Brewers broadcast …they bring their GM into the booth to talk baseball operations. I don’t see all of the Reds feeds on broadcasts, but of the ones I have seen, I’ve never seen the GM in the booth. Usually a community fund person or equivalent talking about anything but baseball

  17. Romano gives up his share of meatballs, but that HR that Shaw hit was a slider in the bottom right hand corner of the zone

  18. They should lift Romano with 2 on and 1 out?

    • no chance with that bunt technique…He got a hit the 1st time, why not let him swing.

      • Agree. That was pathetic. A pitcher should at least have a clue how to put down a sac bunt.

  19. 2 on and down 1 run. Your pitcher has already given up 5. So your decision is to “bunt”…i.e. give away an out to set up one of the weakest hitters in the NL to drive them in.

    Completely illogical and insane?

  20. Wow… Reds are getting all kinds of lucky bounces this inning!

  21. Ervin hits the 2B ump. A boatload of breaks for the good guys this inning.

  22. craziest inning ever!

  23. Is it wrong to laugh?

  24. I’ve never seen so many breaks go our way in one inning. Unreal.

  25. At least 4 plays that should have been outs

  26. Is there a record for number of runs scored in an inning without the ball ever leaving the infield? I’ve never seen bad hitting be so productive.

  27. Reds scoring in spite of managerial decisions.

Brewers talk about D being less important in today’s game is wrong and on full display with Thames and Moose.

    Still, fact

  28. HEY SAL:
BE GRATEFUL AND GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.

  29. What a slop fest … loved every run!!

  30. Yelich out after Romano throws 6 pitches. Every single one was a 92 mph two seamer with a 5 inch break according to Gamecast. 3 balls then 2 strikes and a fly out. Seems like a recipe for disaster.

    • Sal was basically a one pitch pitcher and will still have his team a chance to win against a great lineup. It looked like most of the solid hits were on his slider – which is trash.

I’d like to see him work on a splitter or cutter to go with that two seamer this winter.

If he can develop a second out pitch, he could be a good, durable, inning-eating #3 – like an Aaron Harang or Matt Latos.

  31. Lost in all that silliness….was Guerra had rookie Dixon down 0-2 and the catcher spotted up outside. Guerra waved him off and threw a fastball right down the middle. That error led to everything else. Dilson just chased and Dixon prob would’ve done the same. Stupid? The Reds have done that all year too. You have to pitch to the hitter’s weakness and inexperience is a weakness.

  32. Lorenzen bunting to set up Billy. Thats like Arnold Schwarzeneggar driving the Uber to get Danny DeVito to the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest.

These bunts? Riggleman has to have the ok from the front office. Its just too much.

    • Agreed. So done with this clown show.

1st – Call Peraza in for a bunt if it’s his night off and that’s the plan. Not your pitcher who has power second to none. That bunt call cost him the AB.

2nd – up two and you are playing for the lone run in the 6th freaking inning! To quote bugs, what a maroon.

  33. The best acquisition that nobody is talking about is the Braves getting Gausman.Indy been talking about him for two years. The dude can pitch and will show it.

    • Thanks for the mention. I was going to bring him up and forgot. Wheeler has been spectacular, but has 2 TJs if I’m not mistaken? Gausman has been pretty healthy overall and just needed to get away from the Red Sox & Yankees. Philly seems to be fading. I like Atlanta there, but Cole Hamels and Daniel Murphy will get the Cubs back to the WS imo. Lord…I hope I’m completely wrong. I’d prefer Colorado or Arizona in a heartbeat!

  34. Good grief Peraza

  35. Tie game….why throw Braun 3 straight fastballs down the middle?

    • Lol…..Scooooooots!!!! I was just about to agree with you that it was the same ole Reds. See if Iggy can keep from blowing another lead.

  36. The Legend unties it!!!

  37. Mason insurance rbi triple!!!!

  38. Somebody on here called Mason Williams a AAAA player on here a few weeks ago. A 4A guy is a player that had a shot in the bigs and failed. Mason isn’t in that boat. I would love to see them let Billy go and save that $. MW could be solid 4th OFer and def substitute for Winker and Ervin. Dixon is pretty smooth in the OF too and has an arm. They could put MW in CF and Dixon in RF for Winker late in games.

  39. Williams and Ervin have done better then most of us expected.Herrera may be a better hitter then either of them.Would love to see more of him.

  40. I’ve always liked Ervin’s swing. He hit that bomb in Wrigley last year and then went right back into Price’s deep freeze?

TOBTTR…..one of the better wins of the year!!! It seems like Scooter’s first 2 hits against Milw?
