TYVM Steve! I would have been very disappointed if a game thread had not been offered up today. Not as disappointed as seeing Hamilton leading off and Winker conspicuosly MIA, but disappointed nonetheless.

I was so hoping that the Price defenders or at least the Price non-detractors were spot on regarding the hope during the off season that a new Price was emerging, but alas the same o same o…ugh…

    Baseball is BACK!!!

It’s my understanding that during the season he plans on using some sort of rotation for the outfield. If I recall, there were a lot of people around here proposing that last year and I was poo poo-ing it for various reasons. We’ll see how all this plays out. Game 1 of ST doesn’t tell me anything at all about how Price plans on distributing playing time.

      • Shchi Cossack

Normally, I would agree that the lineup posted for the 1st ST game has little to no predictive value, except this lineup has a very strong resemblance to the expected lineup against a RH starting pitcher with Scotter in the #4 hole and Herrera as DH. Obviously there’s a lot of baseball left to be played ebven before the season begins in earnest.

      • Patrick Jeter

I’m kinda with Cossack here. Price has always been a “earned it” sort of guy. In his mind, Duvall and Schebler have “earned” being the “starters” and Winker is the 4th OFer and will likely stay that way until something drastic happens.

I’ve always believed that sort of thinking is counter productive to success, yet Price has certainly displayed it.

    • Carl Sayre

I am at the head scratching part of the season with Price but it won’t take long to the head shaking part!! They paid all of that money last year fo BP to play elsewhere and still no clue about twiddle onfield! Winkler has been the outfielder of the future for 6he last forever and still has not been allowed to show if he can play at theajor league level!

  2. Jimmylh285

Baseball!!! Yes!! followed redleg nation all winter..never expected any big moves but for whatever reason I’m optimistic..maybe it’s just the eternal reds fan in me

  3. Douglas B. Schloemer

Opening Day 8 sans DH. Sigh….

  4. Shchi Cossack

Seeing Herrera in the opening ST game lineup is encouraging…I think. Having him buried in the #8 hole and DHing kinda sends mixed signals regarding his health and expectations this spring, almost like saying he might be ready to play but probably not and we’ll just ride that horse until he drops.

  5. Sliotar

Spot on, Shchi. Many of the funniest comments on this blog, game-related or not, come from RLN Game Threads.

You know you like baseball when there are almost 200 games, Spring Training and Regular Season combined, and it still feels like the sport has been away for a long time.

    Dilson Herrera as DH today.

He provided 0.7 WAR ($5.4M in present day value) back in 2015, playing 31 games at 2B for Mets.

Would be great if he stays healthy and could be 2B of future. His age (24 next month) fits in nicely with The Next Good Reds Team.

    • old-school

John Fay quotes Price that Herrera still on some throwing protocols…with heavy days and lighter days….so will DH some. Slated to start at 2b tomorrow.

      • lwblogger2

Well that’s a bit discouraging but they did go in and do the surgery so I suspect we shouldn’t be surprised.

  6. Shchi Cossack

Suarez in the #2 hole also looks solid. Suarez and Votto back-to-back in the top of the lineup feels dangerous…almost Cardinal-like!

    • WVRedlegs

That is good to see. But in a spring training game as early as this, it would have been super to see Barnhart leading off against a RH pitcher. Just for the heck of it. Barnhart is probably only going to catch about 5 innings.
However, Price needs to know quickly if the things Hamilton worked on over the winter took root or not. If not, he’ll need some time to find an alternative. Winker no doubt will be one vs. RH pitching. Other than Winker, against LH pitching, Price will need to find a solution. Better to know sooner rather than later on that one I imagine.

    • Shchi Cossack

And if you pencil in Senzel behind Votto on June 19th…Suarez, Votto, Senzel…oh my! Repeat that a few times Dorothy…Suarez and Votto and Senzel…OH MY!

      • Kyle

I might add Winker, Suarez, Votto, Senzel. Even scarier… potentially. 🙂

  7. old-school

    Welcome back Reds baseball.
Good luck to Dilson Herrera. I hope he’s healthy and shows why he was a top hitting prospect.

  8. scottya

I wish I was at the game! Gonna leave work early, right now and watch from home!

  9. JB WV

Couldn’t care less about the lineup today. Here’s hoping the pitchers get through the first week of games injury free.

  10. Mike Z

Any guesses on where Zach Buchanan is heading. I can’t see The Athletic having 2 Cincinnati baseball writers. Also…The Athletic has been well worth the subscription.

    • Steve Mancuso

My guess: back to AZ as beat writer for DBacks

      • lwblogger2

I’ve missed something… Thought C Trent was now at Athletic but Zach staying at Enquirer and Fay back to Enquirer from WCPO? Zach was let go?

  11. WVRedlegs

Looking for a good initial outing for Big Sal Romano today. Its my guess he’ll only go 2,maybe 3 innings today. Probably on more of a pitch count than innings count.
    Go Big Sal. Go Reds.

    • JB WV

I’ll bet you three bottles of moonshine to one he doesn’t go three.

      • WVRedlegs

Mahle coming in the game for the 4th inning. Big Sal must have gone 3. Only 1 run. Hoping Romano looked good for 3 other than that pitch to Alonso.

      • scottya

Sal went two, mahle went two. Mahle was particularly impressive.

  12. Phil

I’m not going to get too worked up over what the line up looks like for the first spring training game but I do hope that by opening day against right-handed pitchers the lineup looks something like:
    Winker LF
    Votto 1B
    Gennett 2B
    Suarez 3B
    Schebler or Duvall RF
    Barnhart C
    Hamilton CF
    Peraza SS

    • Brad

Awfully optimistic to have Gennett in the three hole.

      • Phil

In his career he has an 809 ops and 115 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Those numbers go up to a 930 ops and 138 wRC+ for just 2017.
Both of those sets of numbers would have been second only to Joey Votto on the 2017 Reds.

      • Brad

Sorry, I missed the right handed pitcher qualifier.

    • Phil

If and when Senzel makes it to Cincinnati playing SS I might change to something like:
      Winker LF
      Votto 1B
      Gennett 2B
      Suarez 3B
      Senzel SS
      Schebler or Duvall RF
      Barnhart C
      Hamilton CF

  13. Shchi Cossack

Dang…I can listen to Joey Votto talk about baseball 7/24!

  14. Darrin

Of course the app keeps freezing

  15. Bill

    Would loved to have seen the lineup look like this;
    Winkler LF
    Senzel SS
    Votto 1B
    Suarez 3B
    Duvall RF
    Schebler CF
    Herrera 2B
    Barnhart C
    Ervin TH
    Romano P

  16. old-school

Camera is minor league today….but Peraza didn’t look good on that ground ball. Routine play and almost beat out.

  17. Darrin

50 cent is part of baseball immortality

  18. vegastypo

Ha ha, I turn it on just now, and here Thom ragging on Votto. (Didn’t see the play, maybe he had it coming, but sounds like old times!)

    • Jordan Barhorst

Eh. Probably didn’t deserve it, but it wasn’t wrong information.

    • jazzmanbbfan

Thom spent all of Votto’s 2nd at bat going on and on about Joey’s incredible work ethic. What were you hearing?

      • vegastypo

I’m guessing that Votto went too far off first base to try to field a ground ball, that the second baseman then failed play? Thom made some remark about that happening at least 20 times last season, I think he said, ‘I don’t mean to nitpick,’ but then was talking about Votto’s D. Just funny to be the first thing I hear in this baseball season !

  19. Indy Red Man

I’m not watching, but man I really have high hopes for Mahle! I saw him last year in Indy and he looks like the real deal. Nothing jumps out and his stuff in particular, but he just has nice command and seems like a veteran out there. I’ve seen a lot of comparisons with Leake, but he a better ceiling then that imo.

    • scottya

Mahle looked really good. Faced all big Leaguers too.

  20. Jeff Reed

I’ll worry if Winker is not leading off come March 29th. and thereafter against left and right handed pitching.
