Podcast — RNR #179: Phillip Ervin vs. Billy Hamilton (plus VOTTO!)

Doug Gray joined me again this week, and the topic of the show was whether Phillip Ervin — who has returned to the big leagues with a vengeance this week — has a chance to unseat Billy Hamilton as the starting center fielder for the Cincinnati Reds. We also discussed the incredible season we’re witnessing from Joey Votto, and whether the Reds should bring back Zack Cozart in 2018.

  1. FWIW: ZiPS has Ervin as a .721 OPS guy rest of year, and good for 0.5 WAR (given he’s already amassed 0.4) in 25 games.

  2. Chad, how can one measure whether or not a centerfielder like Billy Hamilton makes a better filter out of the left and right fielders?

I’m sure it can be done but it will take a better mind than mine to figure it out
