This Week on the Farm

It’s hard to believe that there is just about three weeks remaining in the regular season for the Reds minor league teams. We’ll be keeping any eye out to see who the Reds might recall for reinforcements when the rosters expand come the first of September. Let’s check out what is going on down on the farm.

 

AAA Louisville Bats

The Bats have a 48 – 73 record and are 4th out of 4 in the International League West.

International League hitters are hitting .257/.325/.396/.721.

IF Alex Blandino, .276/.390/.439/.829 in 147 PA at AAA and .259/.374/.462/.836 in 236 PA at AA, should be in the 2B/backup IF mix in Spring Training next year. Interesting to note that Blandino made his 2nd appearance at SS for the Bats last night while Vincej played 2B. OF/IF Darnell Sweeney, .286/.350/.417/.767, has been a pleasant surprise for the Bats this season.. IF Brandon Dixon, .253/.320/.426/.746, leads the Bats with 12 HR.

International League pitchers have a 3.96 ERA.

RH SP Tyler Mahle, 2.58 ERA, sure is making it look easy at AAA despite that he still needs work on his breaking pitches. LH SP Cody Reed, 3.77 ERA, had a rough start last night where he tossed 4 IP allowing 5 R on 7 H and 3 BB with 5 SO. LH SP Amir Garrett, 5.91 ERA, has allowed 56 H in 45.2 IP, while with the Bats. RH SP Rookie Davis, 4.95 ERA, has 34 SO and 9 BB in 36.1 IP at AAA. RH RP Alejandro Chacin, 2.69 ERA has 62 SO in 67 IP with the Bats. RH RP Jimmy Herget, 3.13 ERA, now has only 6 BB in 23 IP with 7 S at AAA. RH RP Ariel Hernandez, 3.48 ERA, has 13 BB and 10 SO in 10.1 IP at AAA.

 

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

The Blue Wahoos have a 63 – 57 record and are 1st out of 5 in the Southern League South. The Blue Wahoos are the Southern League South first half division champions.

Southern League hitters are hitting .247/.324/.372/.696.

3B Nick Senzel, .348/.400/.576/.976, is just demolishing minor league pitching. It will be interesting to see if the Reds show their hand regarding the future positional plans for Senzel and Suarez next spring. 2B Josh VanMeter, .264/.339/.373/.712, is the only other Blue Wahoo regular hitting above league average. OF Aristides Aquino, .210/.278/.391/.669, leads the club with 15 HR. 1B Gavin LaValley, .249/.303/.365/.668, has begun struggling a bit at AA.

Southern League pitchers have a 3.62 ERA.

RH SP Austin Ross, 1.56 ERA, has rejoined the Blue Wahoos rotation. RH SP Jose Lopez, 2.46 ERA, has been really good all season, and could reach AAA sometime next season. RH SP Deck McGuire, 2.61 ERA, has allowed only 105 H in 144.2 IP for the Blue Wahoos. RH SP Jesus Reyes, 2.70 ERA, has been very good over his first 6 GS at AA. Carlos Gonzalez, 2.25 ERA, has allowed just 21 H in 28 IP RH RP Tanner Rainey, 2.45 ERA, has 12 SO in 7.1 IP since his promotion to AA. RH RP Zack Weiss, 3.78 ERA in 16.2 IP, has 8 S since joining the club from A+.

 

High A Daytona Tortugas

The Tortugas have a 44 – 72 record and are 5th out of 6 in the Florida State League North.

Florida State League hitters are hitting .251/.321/.363/.685.

OF Reydel Medina, .246/.295/.411/.706, leads the club with 7 3B. 1B James Vasquez, .263/.321/.377/.698, is doing all right since his promotion from Dayton. OF Daniel Sweet, .270/.372/.325/.697, leads the club with 42 BB and 22 SB. IF Luis Gonzalez, .274/.284/.405/.690, has only 4 BB in 204 PA since joining the Tortugas. SS Alfredo Rodriguez, .247/.286/.292/.578, has only 16 E in 103 G at SS.

Florida State League pitchers have a 3.55 ERA.

RH SP Wyatt Strahan, 3.53 ERA in 10 GS, has 43 SO in 51 IP. RH SP Vladimir Gutierrez, 4.46 ERA, has 19 BB and 94 SO in 103 IP. LH SP Ty Boyles, 4.02 ERA, has allowed 59 H in 65 IP. RH SP Wendolyn Bautista, 4.76 ERA, has allowed 108 H in 102 IP. RH RP Aaron Quillen, 0.00 ERA, has not been scored on in his first 6.1 IP since joining the Tortugas. LH RP Joel Bender, 3.00 ERA, has 15 SO and 4 BB in 12 IP with Daytona.

 

Low A Dayton Dragons

The Dragons have a 57 – 65 record and are 7th out of 8 in the Midwest League Eastern. The Dragons clinched a wildcard berth in the Midwest League East Division with their first half finish.

Midwest League hitters are hitting .249/.324/.379/.703.

OF Jose Siri, .291/.336/.515/.851, leads the Dragons with 19 HR and 37 SB. OF Taylor Trammel, .283/.364/.443/.807, leads the team with 9 3B and 58 BB. 1B Bruce Yari, .256/.347/.405/.751, is having a good year for the Dragons.

Midwest League pitchers have a 3.93 ERA.

LH SP Scott Moss, 3.63 ERA, has 135 SO in 114 IP. RH SP Tony Santillan, 3.64 ERA, has 108 SO in 108.2 IP. RH RP Aaron Fossas, 2.54 ERA, has saved four games. RH RP Carlos Machorro, 2.51 ERA, has allowed 27 H in 43 IP. LH RP Jesse Adams, 2.71, has 74 SO and 10 BB in 63 IP of relief.

 

Rookie Billings Mustangs

The Mustangs have a 24 – 26 record and are 1st out of 4 in the Pioneer League North.

The Pioneer League hitters are averaging .287/.366/.446/.812.

SP/DH Hunter Greene, .357/.357/.643/1.000, has made the most of his first 14 PA as the Mustangs DH. RF Miles Gordon, .333/.412/.547/.959, will be one to watch at Dayton next season. 2B Alejo Lopez .315/.413/.477/.890, has 25 BB and 18 SO in 183 PA. LF Andy Sugilio, .325/.376/.472/.849, leads the club with 12 SB.. CF Stuart Fairchild, .310/.406/.423/.829, is having a solid season with the Mustangs. SS Jeter Downs, .244/.345/.387/.732, has 18 BB in 139 PA.

The Pioneer League average ERA is 5.41.

RH SP Mac Sceroler, 3.57 ERA, has 25 SO in 22.2 IP. LH SP Packy Naughton, 4.89 ERA, has 38 SO in 35 IP. RH SP Tyler Mondile, 4.93 ERA, leads the club with 45.2 IP. Jhon DeJesus, 5.10 ERA, has 39 SO in 42.1 IP. RH RP Cory Thompson, 3.09 ERA, has 24 SO and 12 BB in 23.1 IP. RH RP Connor Bennett, 3.62 ERA, has 42 SO in 27.1 IP.

 

Rookie AZL Reds

The Reds have a 17 – 24 record and are 4th out of 5 in the AZL Central.

The AZL hitters averaged .257/.340/.385/.724.

RF Reshard Munroe, .330/.450/.495/.945, leads the AZL Reds with 19 BB. LF Mariel Bautista, .343/.374/.407/.781, has just 3 BB in 116 PA. 1B Justin Bellinger, .259/.355/.420/.775, is tied for the club lead with 3 HR. RF Raul Wallace, .290/.313/.449/.762, leads the club with 5 3B. SS Miguel Hernandez, .295/.313/.436/.748, has 1 BB in 80 PA.

The AZL average ERA is 4.45.

RH SP Ricardo Smith, 3.00, has 49 SO and 13 BB in 39 IP. LH SP Jacob Heatherly, 3.28 ERA, has 25 SO in 24.2 IP. RH SP Jared Solomon, 3.42 ERA, has 27 SO in 26.1 IP. RH RP Edward Escoboza, 3.97 ERA, has 44 SO in 34 IP.

  1. When you have 6 minor league teams and only 1 is above 500 where is loaded minors.

    • Well, Dayton had a bunch of players move up and they finished the 1st half in the top of their league. They will be playing in the playoffs. That’s a second team. When looking at farm systems though I think they look at the number and talent of prospects much more than they look at the W/L record. I don’t know if I’d call the Reds “loaded” as far as the minors. They fell out of the top 10 rankings I saw at mid-season. They aren’t a poor farm system though, if that’s what you’re implying.
