2017 Reds / Minors / This Week on the Farm

This Week on the Farm

The All-Star break is right around the corner. It will be very interesting to see what kind of moves, if any, that Dick Williams is able to pull off before the trading deadline at the end of the month. 1. The glut of starting pitching at AAA had it’s 1st casualty with Davis assigned to AA coming off his rehab assignment. That’s probably where he needs to be until he can (re)establish himself as a AA starting pitcher. He had never established himself at AAA and certainly wasn’t ready to start at the major league level. Once the logjam at AAA is cleared by moving a couple of starters to the 25-man roster, Rookie probably gets another shot at AAA but he does have competition for that promotion.

  2. Glad to see Amaral released and Renda traded. Neither player had a future with the Reds at the major league level and the roster spots and playing time were needed by players who may have such a role as prospects.

  3. The surprise release of C Rob Brantley certainly signals that the Reds will keep C Stuart Turner on the 25-man roster for the entire year. Brantley’s release didn’t make sense the day it was announced, and now with Mesoraco going back on the DL, it makes even less sense.
Blandino has made the jump to AAA a successful one so far. He could make Dilson Herrera and Jose Peraza expendable and tradable.
Gavin LaValley is having a very impressive season.
Miles Gordon is making up for lost time from last year’s injury. Very impressive start.

    • Gordon has a lot of tools. If his feel to hit comes along and he already has good plate discipline for a teenager, he could bust out as a prospect.

      • Did not follow much, but seemed he out played Turner in Spring training – based on memory but no real facts

    • The Brantley release must have been an opt out clause in the minor league contract he signed with the Reds that was triggered if he wasn’t on the 40-man roster by June 30th.

  4. You have to wonder if Winker batting leadoff was a decree from the Reds FO.

DeShields don’t seem like the type of manager to go from batting Winker 3rd-7th to jumping him all the way up to leadoff.

    • I found that interesting too, and thought the exact same thing. I believe it is a harbinger of things to come at the ML level in the 2nd half. A trade of BHam by July 31 may be in the minds of the front office.
The Dodgers could use a speedy CF, and a reliever possibly named Storen.

      • I was just going to say I could see Billy being a piece of a trade and the FO prepping for life with a new leadoff hitter/OF
