The Cincinnati Reds (27-30) and the St. Louis Cardinals (26-30) will attempt to play a game this evening at 7:10 after Scooter Gennett rocked the baseball world last evening by hitting four home runs. Gennett became just the 17th MLB player to accomplish that feat, and the first ever Cincinnati Red to do so. The Reds blasted the Cardinals 13-1 last evening, giving the Cardinals their fifth straight loss.

Starting Pitchers

Bronson Arroyo has been better in his last two starts (5 ER in 11.0 IP), but he is giving up home runs at an unbelievably bad rate. Arroyo’s 2.97 HR/9 is not only the worst in the MLB, but the worst in baseball history of any player that qualifies for the ERA title. The next worst over a full season: Jose Lima’s 2.20 HR/9 in 2000.

Arroyo has faced the Cardinals twice this season, and it hasn’t gone well: 8.0 IP, 10 ER, 11 H, 7 BB, 5 K. The good news is that Arroyo’s last start against the Cardinals on 4/30 was the only start all season that Arroyo did not allow a HR.

Lance Lynn has had a nice return to the Cardinals rotation this season following Tommy John Surgery. The good news for the Reds is that Lynn’s FIP shows he is likely due for some regression. He has struggled some with giving up the long ball this season (uh oh, Scooter). Lynn did dominate the Reds back on 4/28: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.

Scooter Fever

Scooter Gennett hitting four home runs in a game was arguably the greatest in-game accomplishment (not including career milestones) in Reds history. I met Scooter a few weeks ago in Philadelphia. Scooter was literally as nice and humble as any player I have ever met. It is really cool when something great like last night happens to someone like Scooter.

News and Notes

Conclusion

Last night was about as exciting of a Reds game as we have seen in a long time. The Cardinals are really struggling right now, and the Reds need to pounce on them while they are down. Go Reds! (and also go Cavs later tonight!)

I guess tonight will be the first time nobody will be yelling about Mesoraco batting 8th. Why is Scooter batting 7th?? Get Duvall out of that 4 spot and put Scooter there.

  2. Jack

Nick what’s the over/under on home runs for Arroyo? That should be there every ga me he pitches. 3 bombs tonight.

    • msanmoore

That’s one … could easily go over 3 tonight. Just hope whatever he gives up are all solo shots.

  3. hoosierdad1

Anyone have an idea on the record for most consecutive at bats with an RBI?

    • hoosierdad1

With 4 RBIs tonight, Scooter can tie the NL record for most in 2 games.

      • hoosierdad1

Apparently, 4 homers in a row in consecutive at bats is the record. So a dinger in his first AB would set a new record.

  4. Joel Herzig

Scooter entered yesterday’s game hitting slugging .450 and finished the game slugging .578. Love that.

  5. Darrin

Arroyo really shouldn’t make another start…..he’s lucky Lynn didn’t rip a double

    • msanmoore

As Cowboy said, he’s throwing to Lynn’s bat speed. That’s a pretty sad statement.

    • msanmoore

We did get to Wainwright hard last nigh … but I agree. It’s unlikely we can touch up Lynn that much again.

  6. msanmoore

Best play of the night so far … the LF line ball boy snagging the foul liner.

    • VaRedsFan

2nd time thru the lineup. It will get worse the 3rd time thru, if he makes it that far

  7. msanmoore

3 innings and at least 2 runs … he’s toast (again). Let’s see if Price does his best Captain Hook impression.

  8. Indy Red Man

Arroyo…CUT.HIM.LOOSE. So tired of this….yeah he might have a decent game once in a while but he’s going to beat down more often then not because he no longer has big league talent!! Its that simple

    • msanmoore

Too bad Superman didn’t smash one out with 2 on in front of him.

  9. msanmoore

3 runs really isn’t “limited damage” in my book … any guesses as to whether he sees the 4th inning or not?

  10. Luckeydad

Bronson, I really appreciated your time with the Reds but good lord it is so painful to watch him pitch

  11. VaRedsFan

I wasn’t listening much, but THOM! should have asked Castellini what the heck is Bronson Arroyo doing on this team

    • msanmoore

Grit, veteran mentor and innings eater … how much you want to bet those would have been the answers?

  12. Luckeydad

Looks like he is in next inning…….uhg

  13. VaRedsFan

Evertime it seems lke the Reds get on a little mini-roll, Bronson sucks the life out of it

    • msanmoore

I love Bronson … but it’s time. I know we’re not winning the division or even getting a wild card. But we can’t see this stuff every outing and still be expected to keep quiet.

    • msanmoore

Well Duvall hit it … can’t fault him for that.

  14. Indy Red Man

Crazy thing is the Reds are 6-5 in Arroyo’s starts so far but they 3,4,4, and 5 in 4 of the losses so they might be 9-2 or 8-3 with a mediocre pitcher like Wojo.

      • Chuck Schick

In the games Wojo has pitched, the opposition has scored 8,2 and 6 runs….so the record would likely be about the same

    • VaRedsFan

Yeah…the reason is because they scored 9,7,5,13, and 3….Only the 3 was a serviceable start

  15. Skyline

For Arroyo, every pitch is an eephus pitch.

  16. msanmoore

Schebler must be feeling better tonight. Nice swat.

  17. msanmoore

Bronson … “veteran player(s) to drive the ship” … I’m thinking not so much as a starting pitcher. And that was Kremcheck talking.

  18. msanmoore

Hamilton looks like he’s in a funk … playing statue on the 3rd strike.

  19. VaRedsFan

You’ve hit the lottery with only 3 runs in 5 innings for Bronson. Why roll the dice on another inning? Hold your breath

  20. msanmoore

Lynn is out? Now I really wish Price would yank Bronson.

  21. muttonlettucetomato

Wow. A battle of the bullpens definitely bodes well for the Reds. Let’s hope the Reds can get some runs and get the brooms out.

  22. msanmoore

Lynn doesn’t look happy at all. And Price did the right thing and will bring in Wandy. I like that move. Let’s see if we get out of the inning and then can generate some runs.

  23. msanmoore

Cost us a run, but Wandy is out of the game.

  24. msanmoore

Radio feed is active, MLB.tv feed is in commercial break. Collision rule challenge.

  25. Indy Red Man

What a throw by Scooter but its too bad Peralta made such a bad pitch to Fowler? Looked like he hung a change-up.

  26. msanmoore

Time to go watch on the little screen … hoping for another Reds Magic Rally.

  27. Indy Red Man

Suarez is only hitting .240 for the last 30 days….swing seems a little long and he’s rolling over on alot of pitches. I know he has to be working on going the other way so hopefully it will click soon! He’s still doing some damage obviously!

  28. earmbrister

Yes!!! We have a bench, and oh, the Cards suck.

  29. muttonlettucetomato

TIE GAME! It really makes you wonder that if this team had some starting pitching if they would be looking at a wild card berth.

    • Tom Mitsoff

At the very least. With even decent starting pitching, this team is a solid contender.

  30. VaRedsFan

Brutal AB by Mez….watches the 3-1 pitch right down the middle….maybe he’s batting where he should be

  31. Indy Red Man

BOOM BABY…..to steal a little slogan from my Pacers

  32. earmbrister

Gotta love Joey. I can’t even leave my computer, watching Gameday, when Joey (or Billy) is at bat. Cozart is getting to be a must view as well.

  33. Luckeydad

I will say that this team is really fun tobe watch…….wow, what an inning

  34. Indy Red Man

Reds could be on their way to 7-5 in Arroyo’s starts….if only the other guys could pick it up? Reds scouts are scouring womens college baseball to find more 72 mph lollipop throwers!

  35. earmbrister

It’s a whole new game. A short game, with what has proven to be a quality bullpen this year.

    Go Reds!!!

  36. Indy Red Man

Lorenzen dropping the curve on the corner to end the inning! Peralta has a plus heater, plus changeup, and decent curve (allows .188 to LH lifetime). I know they’re tough in the pen but if we can’t find 5 decent starters then look at one or both of them.
