2017 Reds / Minors / This Week on the Farm

This Week on the Farm

The Reds appear to be shuttling pitchers between Cincinnati and Louisville at a higher frequency than they make calls to bullpen.  It seems that this constant shuffling of arms has become necessary to keep fresh arms on hand since they decided to stash a 3rd string catcher on the roster and go with a 12 man pitching staff.  A twelve man pitching staff is not uncommon, at least in places other than Cincinnati, but is a big challenge for the Reds staff that is depleted by injuries and in the middle of a rebuild.  I’ll find very interesting to see how long they will continue to shuffle their pitching staff in this manner and stick with the 3 catchers and the 12 man pitching staff.

AAA Louisville Bats

The Bats have a 12 – 20 record and are 4th out of 4 in the International League West.

International League hitters are hitting .251/.320/.385/.705.

SS/2B Juan Perez, .300/.398/.538/.935, has had his career season interrupted by trip to the DL.  SS Zack Vincej, .243/.317/.297/.614 in 41 PA, has just returned from the DL.  Zack Walters has also joined the team from the DL.  Walters is a 27 year old switch hitter who has put up a slash line of .264/.311/.479/.790 in 1685 PA at AAA.  Walters has played all his games so far at 1B, but in his minor league career has logged time at SS (385 G), 3B (114 G), 2B (61 G), LF/RF (58 G), and 1B (45 G).  OF/1B Sebastian Elizalde, .295/.380/.411/.791, continues to impress at AAA.  OF Jesse Winker, .283/.371/.333/.704, is still chasing that hot streak to turn his season from good to great.  OF Phil Ervin, .220/.276/.396/.671, has ran into a slump.  2B Dilson Herrera, .225/.282/.314/596 continues his struggles at the plate as well.

International League pitchers have a 3.82 ERA.

RH SP Asher Wojciechowski (0.92 ERA) has been great over his first 4 GS and 19.2 IP.  RH SP Sal Romano (1.23 ERA), who is still on the DL, is the only other SP to show any success on the mound.  Hopefully the Bats will start to see some good starts from Reed, Garrett, and Davis joining the staff recently.  RH RP Kyle McMyne (1.89 ERA), RH RP Kevin Shackelford (1.93 ERA), RH RP Louis Coleman (2.25 ERA), and RH RP Evan Mitchell (2.61 ERA) are pitching well out of the bullpen.

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

The Blue Wahoos have a 17 – 16 record and are 1st out of 5 in the Southern League South.

Southern League hitters are hitting .242/.321/.367/.688.

OF Tyler Goeddel who struggled at AAA (.424 OPS in 43 PA) is off to a hot start at AA (.320/.433/.400/.833 in 30 PA).  CF/1B Brian O’Grady, .188/.360/.391/.751, continues to be one of my favorites due the unique set of skills he displays. OF Gabriel Guerrero, .305/.333/.391/.724, is faring well at the plate. OF Aristides Aquino, .154/.219/.269/.489, might need a trip back to A+ for confidence boost.

Southern League pitchers have a 3.53 ERA.

RH SP Tyler Mahle (1.44 ERA) has a 5.33 SO/W ratio.  RH SP Austin Ross (0.87 ERA), is having an excellent start to his season. RH SP Luis Castillo (3.38 ERA), is off to a good start.  RH RP Jimmy Herget, (2.57 ERA) has recorded 8 S and has 25 SO in 14 IP.  Ismael Guillon (0.77 ERA), Geoff Broussard (0.90 ERA), and Ariel Hernandez (1.88 ERA) are all throwing very well out of the bullpen.

High A Daytona Tortugas

The Tortugas have a 19 – 15 record and are 2nd out of 6 in the Florida State League North.

Florida State League hitters are hitting .253/.320/.369/.688.

1B Gavin LaValley, .273/.316/.496/.812, leads the Tortugas with 7 HR. 2B Shed Long, .286/.333/.454/.787, continues to do well at the plate.  3B Nick Senzel, .288/.350/.416/.766, is beginning to put it together at A+.  SS Alfredo Rodriguez (.513 OPS) and C Chris Okey (.481 OPS) continue to struggle at the plate.

Florida State League pitchers have a 3.59 ERA.

Starting pitchers Jonathon Crawford, (1.93 ERA), Jose Lopez (2.45 ERA), Jesus Reyes (2.61 ERA) and Wendolyn Bautista (3.00 ERA) are all off to good starts on the mound. SP Vladimir Gutierrez (3.69 ERA) has begun to pitch very well after a slow start to the season.  RH RP Ty Rainey (1.53 ERA) has allowed just 3 R and 4 H over 17.2 IP while recording 30 SO and 2 BB.  RH RP Robert Stock (2.37 ERA) is throwing well coming out of the bullpen.

Low A Dayton Dragons

The Dragons have a 22 – 11 record and are 1st out of 8 in the Midwest League Eastern.

Midwest League hitters are hitting .240/.316/.367/.683.

SS/2B Luis Gonzalez, .370/.396/.478/.874, is off to a great start in his 49 PA since coming off the DL.  C Tyler Stephenson, .289/.397/.454/.850, is hitting great thus far this season.  2B Brantley Bell,.317/.385/.442/.827, has starting hitting well lately.   1B James Vasquez, .265/.354/.456/.810, has come on strong after a slow start.  OF Michael Beltre, .278/.393/.389/.781, continues to get on base at a high rate.  OF T.J. Friedl, .259/.336/.422/.758, has ran into his first slump.  OF Taylor Trammell, .255/.353/.353/.706, is doing well for a player that is young for this league.

Midwest League pitchers have a 3.75 ERA.

LH SP Wennington Romero (1.91 ERA) leads the starting rotation.  LH SP Scott Moss (2.50 ERA) has 51 SO and 12 BB over 36 IP.  RH SP Tony Santillan (3.55 ERA) has 18 BB and 35 SO in 33 IP.  RH SP Alex Webb (1.93 ERA) has been great over his first 2 GS with the Dragons.  LH SP Max Wotell has been assigned to the Dragons roster.  RP Joel Kuhnel (2.19 ERA) has recorded 5 saves. RP Aaron Fossas (0.44 ERA) and RP Jesse Stallings (1.98ERA) are doing well out of the bullpen.

  1. Thanks Tom.
Scott Moss continues to roll at Dayton. A very solid, solid starting pitcher. I can see him getting the promotion to Daytona when either Vladimir or Jose Lopez move up to Pensacola.

  2. I would keep Stuart Turner and trade Tucker Barnhart. Don’t ask me why only that it will save money for the cash strapped wooing Cincinnati Reds
