Reds vs Cardinals– September 27, 2016

Second of four games between the Reds (66-90) and the Cardinals (81-75.) See, the Cardinals have 75 losses, not 74. 75. Because the Reds beat the Cardinals last night. They beat them. They beat them and they sent that failboat right back down the Mississip.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Prevailing sentiment:  “I don’t know how they played after this.” They did, because that’s what they do.

I’ve written before about how transient baseball attachments are in this age of free agency; no sooner had we adjusted to the oddness of Aroldis Chapman in Yankee stripes when he suddenly showed up for work a Cubs uniform. The tragic loss of Jose Fernandez, and the way in which it brought his teammates to their knees, is a reminder of the fragile humanity that drives this game.

  1. ARGH, I missed the biggest trade of the season! I’m not sure how I feel about Wainwright wearing the wishbone C.

    • Straight up for Stephenson? I think I wish the Reds hadn’t made that trade. There was a nite in one of the Cardinals recaps after yesterday’s game that at least their ace was going tonight. First, I don’t think an ERA at 4 1/2 makes Wainwright an ace. Second, I don’t think the writer realized that ace might be Stephenson tonight. Go Reds!

  2. I hope Selsky gets to start every remaining game this season. He’s got defensive issues and lacks power, especially for a corner OF, but having his bat on the bench next season and having him available to fill in as a starter if needed feels like a nice security blanket.

  3. I’m here for this one too. We hit Miller Park, Wrigley, U.S. Cellular and Busch in 4 days.

  4. I hope they read the scouting report…pitch to Wainright like a regular hitter….he can handle the bat. There…they’ve been warned.

    • One of the reasons I continue to watch this season is to see how he plies his craft. Something else, and all the naysayers have fallen silent over the past two months.

  5. I read an article late last night about how Monday’s game was the first since 2013 that the Cards drew fewer than 40,000. It was nice reading the idiotic comments from the BFIB about how dumb their manager is and how upset they are with the front office.

  6. Dejesus .573 ops coming in…..nice guy and ok defensively but he can’t hit, no power, or speed to speak of. We need to do better!!

  7. Just tuning in. See Peraza was listed at SS , but see DeJesus there. Something happened?

  8. Bob Steve actually looked pretty good tonite but can’t just throw fastballs down the middle because you’re down in the count. Encouraging though….good breaking stuff and his fastball has movement! He was justing going 2-1 on guys instead of 1-2 and it made a difference.

  9. Wow. Just…..wow. 4 Card homers tonight. Wow. We haven’t run anyone out there tonight who hasn’t given up a blast.

  10. Interesting stat about Sampson this year

    1st-15th pitch = allowing .326 batt average
    16th-60th pitch = allowing under .200 average

He is just not a reliever….maybe not a great starter either but that’s what he’s best at. He has good stuff but when he’s bad he is bad!!!
