Reds at Cubs – September 19, 2016

The Cincinnati Reds, eliminated from everything, travel to Wrigley Field for the final time this season to play a three game series against the best-record-in-baseball Chicago Cubs.

STARTING PITCHERS

PITCHER ERA FIP HR/9 BB% K%
Jason Hammel 3.60 4.44 1.3 7.8% 20.9%
Tim Adleman 4.21 5.89 1.9 8.3% 15.7%

Tim Adleman takes the mound for the 11th time in his Major League career, looking to rebound after his 4-run, 5-inning outing against Milwaukee last week. Adleman only gave up three hits in that game, but three walks a homer conspired against him.

Jason Hammel hasn’t been particularly sharp in his last four starts. He’s 1-4 with a 8.60 ERA, adding a full run to his season-long ERA in the process. He’s looking for a game against the Reds to get back on track, as he pitched six shutout innings twice against the Reds back in April.

  1. At least Peraza is not in CF tonight. A CF he is not. A few misadventures yesterday will cause that.
The Cubs have 3 MVP candidates and 3 CY Young Award candidates. Sigh.

    • I’m not sure how good of a CF Iribarren is but at least he’s a guy who’s played a lot in the OF. I think he’s gotten quite a few starts in CF for L’ville this season.

    • I guess we can always laugh at the Heyward contract though… We got that goin’ for us, right? Right?

  2. Word out that Cozart is not with the team and is “shut down” but not ruled out for the season yet. At this juncture, does the second part make any sense after the first part?

    • Why would the Reds bother to put Billy Hamilton on the DL, and not Cozart. I think Price said on his pregame show a few days ago that it wouldn’t make much sense to run Cozart out there any more this season.

      • I have a suspicion that some of these decisions are being made “above” Price.

In Cozart’s case it would seem to clearly hurt his market value to have him end the season on the formal DL. However if the new use of the 15 day Dl during September is actually being driven by MLB in the name of accuracy in their injury records and, at least as an aside, to create more transparency about injuries among the teams, should Cozart be included too?

BTW if you weren’t listening to the Reds radio feed tonight, Sheldon said during the beat writers’ segment that Reed has been declared shut down for the year. They felt like he had too far to come back to be ready by the end of the season, particularly with nowhere for game rehab experience.

  3. Going to the game tonight. Hopefully our Redlegs make it worth my while.

  4. It’s amazing how bad our pitching is, but it could have been far worse. Like you see with Adelmam his FIP is way higher than his ERA (ditto Finnegan and Strailey). Is our fielding great . . Or are they just very lucky?

  5. It really is a shame that baseball game got in the way of tHom’s monologue about the cubs schedule.

    Absolutely fascinating!

  6. Adleman’s been pitching home run derby the last 5 batters. It’s time for the bullpen to step in.

  7. The way the Cubs were squaring up on Adleman last inning, these homers can’t be much of a surprise. Now it’s on to the bullpen. Joy.

  8. I guess we don’t have 7 better guys to put in the pen but I wish Cingrani and Wood could both go away….and take Jumbo with them.

      • I was thinking it was a given that he won’t be back….but I should know better! Why did we get rid of JC Ramirez? He has more stuff then any of those guys and he’s younger too. Wood/Jumbo are 30+ and Cingrani isn’t going to get any better.

  9. Guys its the same song with our pen and has been all year long.Aldeman is a fill in and did a heck of a job today but we should have got more then 4 hits through 7 innings. With Iggy and Lorenzen probably not available today we had no chance to hold on to a 2-0 lead against the best team in baseball.

  10. Perhaps it’s because I had a spinal injection today, but I can’t seem to get too upset about giving up homeruns in order to have the record.

At least it’s for a good cause, right?

  11. It’s hard to believe they’jj be able to turnover the worst pitching staff from this season to the nexr

  12. I can’t help but to sit here and laugh. I’m a sick man. It just be a defense mechanism.

  13. Wood hadn’t given up a HR in like 2 years so now he’s busy making up for lost time! Another thrower with no idea how to pitch

  14. Price made a double switch when Wood came in to pitch.Guess he wanted him to pitch the eighth.Just goes to show you what confidence he has in the rest of the pen I guess.
