This Week on the Farm

Playoffs

Pensacola defeated the Mississippi Braves 6-5 in the first game of a best of five Southern League Division playoff series.  They unfortunately then lost three straight games to the Braves (5-0, 9-2, and 4-2) and are now eliminated from the Southern League playoffs.

Billings swept the Great Falls Voyagers two games to none (7-3 and 5-1) to win the best of three Pioneer League North Divisional Series playoffs.  They were defeated 3-0 by the Orem Owls last night in the first game of the best of three Pioneer League Championship Series.

September Call Ups

The Reds have added two additional pitchers to provide some depth to the pitching staff.  RH RP Matt Magill (5.10 ERA at AAA and 6.52 ERA at AA) and RH RP Abel De Los Santos (3.54 ERA at AAA, 3.86 ERA at AA EL, and 1.93 ERA at AA SL) have both received September call ups.  The Reds cleared a roster spot for Matt Magill by placing Alfredo Simon on the 60 Day DL.  Magill was acquired in the Chris Heisey trade and will be making his major league debut with the Reds.  De Los Santos was acquired off waivers earlier this season and has appeared in two games with Washington in 2015.

Arizona Fall League

The Reds had previously announced that they would be sending RHP Barrett Astin, RHP Evan Mitchell, RHP Daniel Wright, 2B Brandon Dixon, SS Zach Vincej, and C Chad Wallach to play for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.  The Reds had one additional spot to fill after that announcement and added another one with Daniel Wright being claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels.  The Reds have now filled these two roster spots with LHP Nick Routt and OF Brian O’Grady.

LH RP Nick Routt put up a 0.89 ERA in 50.1 IP allowing 29 H and 12 BB with 46 SO at AA and then put up a 5.00 ERA in 18 IP allowing 22 H and 13 BB with 12 SO at AAA.

OF Brian O’Grady hit .235/.363/.394/.758 in 424 PA at A+.

Baseball America Classification All Stars

The Reds had four players named by Baseball America to their 2016 Minor League Classification All Star Teams.  OF Scott Schebler (.311/.370/.564/.934) was named to the AAA team.  RP Alejandro Chacin (1.78 ERA) made the AA team.  OF Aristides Aquino (.273/.327/.519/.846) and RP Jimmy Herget (1.78 ERA) were both named to the High Class A squad.

  1. I was sorry to see Pensacola bow out so quickly and quietly after the great run they had all season.

I’m guessing Aquino starts the 2017 year at AA. I hope if he continues to rake like he did late in the season at A+ that he isn’t left to languish at AA for the entire season..

    • Aquino is a RH hitter, so the Pensacola Curse in the right field to left field wind shouldn’t be a problem for him.
Have the Reds and Pensacola announced a new working agreement yet? It is still possible that the Reds AA team could be elsewhere in 2017.

      • I follow Doug Gray’s site; redsminorleagues.com ;and, it appears nothing is (publicly) settled yet.

In response to a comment last week on his site, Doug indicated that he thinks it is possible the Reds and the Pensacola franchise have reached an agreement but for whatever reason haven’t announced it yet (because as I recall there has been little to no “silly season gossip connecting the Reds to other franchises nor Pensacola to other MLB orgs).

      • I think Aquino is about the most promising outfielder in the Reds system (including Winker). He has speed, power, and is improving in making contact and being selective.

  2. The Mustangs are coming to where I’m living, Orem, UT (home of the Orem Owlz, the Mustangs’ Pioneer League finals opponent). The Mustangs got one-hit last night and they face elimination on Friday night. I will certainly be in attendance. Go Mustangs!
