The Reds are playing some pretty good baseball.  They have now won 2 of 3 in four straight series coming out of the All Star break.  Jose Peraza is a bench player throughout unfortunately.  Maybe Rip Van Jocketty will wake up long enough to pull off a deal or two before the trade deadline that will free up some playing time for Peraza, Schebler, and Winker.  Long live the Retool/Rebuild/Regurgitation!  Now it is time to see what is happening down on the farm.

AAA Louisville Bats

The Bats have a 53-52 record and are in 2nd place in the International League West.

The International League hitters are averaging .254/.320/.380/.700.

The Florida State League hitters are averaging .249/.320/.355/.676.

The Tortugas were involved in a bench clearing brawl last week following Gavin LaValley being HBP.  The Reds have disciplined the players involved but will not publicly announce the punishments.  So it is not certain whether any of the Tortugas player movement this week was a result of the brawl.

RF Aristides Aquino (.283/.337/.516/.853) has been on fire and now has 15 HR.  OF/1B Brian O’Grady (.236/.374/.409/.783) has been slumping a bit lately.  1B Gavin LaValley (.259 /.329/.452/.781) is still hitting well at A+.  OF Angelo Gumbs (.297/.332/.448/.780) continues to hit well for the Tortugas.  OF Juan Duran (.217/.275/.261/.535 at AA) was demoted from AA to the A+ Tortugas.  OF Reydel Medina (.235/.256/.406/.663 at A) was promoted from low A to A+ Daytona.  2B Shed Long (.281/.371/.457/.828 at A) was also promoted from low A to A+ Daytona.  2B Blake Butler was placed on the DL with a rib injury.

Rookie DSL Reds

I don’t plan to begin full coverage of the Dominican Summer League Reds, but thought I might add a quick snippet here for a while to keep you updated on the progress of SS Alfredo Rodriguez until the Reds bring him stateside.

The DSL hitters are averaging .241/.337/.324/.661.

SS Alfredo Rodriguez is the high profile Cuban SS who the Reds recently signed for $7 M.  He is currently hitting .273/.366/.333/.699 in 41 PA over 10 G.  Bear in mind that Rodriguez is 22 years old and the average age of the DSL is 18.2.

Can somebody please make sense of the Rodriguez signing for me again?

    • The Duke

Peraza with better defense is what the Reds brass seems to think. Supposedly a GG quality defender. Plus speed, doesn’t strike out much, not much power.

Every time Winker down cycles, it concerns me whether his wrist is again (still) an underlying issue.

  3. ohiojimw

Trades or not, it is about time to take a look at whether Schebler is a blossoming MLB talent or a loud 4A bat.

  4. WVRedlegs

Travieso again on the DL this year at Pensacola has to be a concern. Same with C Tyler Stephenson in Dayton out again with his wrist. Good thing Okey is doing well.
About time for Senzel to go to Daytona and maybe skip Daytona all together and throw him into the mix at Pensacola and a playoff atmosphere.

    • Gonzo Reds

I sensed there was something wrong with Travieso when I saw him in Jax against the Suns last week. Now I know why! Clear he’s behind several guys and probably will be back at AA next year.

    • The Duke

Senzel and Okey have to stay in Dayton at least through Tuesday, I have tickets that day. They should have Santillan start that day while they are at it.

      • Shchi Cossack

Now that’s sound reasoning and logic, Duke. I just wish the Reds brass could employ reasoning and logic even aproaching such a level. I was hoping to make a trip to Dayton this summer for a game, but such does not appear likely now.

OK. No moves until next Wednesday at the earliest. I am going to Daytona in a few weeks, so any time before then would be just fine.

Seems like Rookie Davis figured something out,/got healthy,/is getting lucky, but his strike out total is way up over the last four starts. I believe 24 strikeouts in 23+ innings.

    • WVRedlegs

18 K’s in 18 IP in his last 3 starts. With only 1 BB. That is getting it done.

    • big5ed

I noticed that, too. His K/9 rate early this season had fallen alarmingly, so maybe they’ve figured something out on him. He was getting guys out, even without the Ks., but it’s good to see that.

After putting up a 1.049 at ROK League Billings, Daniel Sweet appears to have a little chip on his shoulder. In his 1st game at A League Dayton, Sweet went 2-5 w/ 1-2B, 1-SB oh and this should make the Reds brass happy with his progress…3-SO.

After being drafted in the 23rd round in 2012 (by the Reds) out of HS and failing to sign, Sweet was drafted in the 25th round in 2014 and again failed to sign, then was drafted in the 29th round (again by the Reds) in 2016 and began his professional career in Billings as a 21-year-old CF.

The Old Coassack is ready to turn the page on Robert Stephenson until he proves he can throw strikes.

Stephenson pitched 3.2 innings tonight before being yanked after giving up 7-ER on 6-BB, 4-H, 1-HR & 4-SO. 4 of the BB scored, inluding a steal of home. Stepjhenson is a long way from being major league ready and he’s showing no indication of getting things together.

    • Chad Dotson

That’s not encouraging, certainly…but he’s just 23. I’m not ready to turn the page just yet on a guy that was ranked as high as the #16 prospect in all of baseball at one time.

But you’re right, he’s gotta learn to throw strikes more consistently. Not seeing much improvement.
