Reds vs Diamondbacks – July 23, 2016

The Cincinnati Reds (37-59) have won 5 of 7 since the all-star break, including a 6-2 win last night over the Arizona Diamondbacks (40-56). The Reds got another terrific start from Dan Straily (6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K), and Joey Votto hit a big three-run home run. The two teams will square off again tonight at 7:10. The Diamondbacks have lost three straight games, and  are 4-11 in July.

Starting Pitchers

Keyvius Sampson is back in the big leagues, and making his first start of the season. Sampson had made 12 career MLB starts (all coming in 2015 with the Reds), and did appear in 6 games in the Reds bullpen earlier this year. He has a 6.29 ERA/5.51 FIP in 68.2 IP in the MLB.

Sampson has been very good this year for the Reds at AAA. He has a 2.06 ERA/2.84 FIP in 56.2 IP (14 G, 9 GS). He has 58 strikeouts and just 19 walks.

LHP, Robbie Ray has been much better than his 4.49 ERA might suggest. He is striking out a ton of batters (10.52 K/9), which is a major improvement from 8.59 K/9 in 2015.

Ray was a 12th round pick of the Nationals back in 2012. He was traded to the Tigers in the Doug Fister deal in 2013, and then traded to the Diamondbacks in 2014 in a 3-team deal with the Yankees, which included former Red, Didi Gregorius.

Votto 🔥🔥🔥

Joey Votto continue to be really good at baseball. Votto is hitting .351/.505/.649 with 6 HR over the last 30 days. Votto’s 204 wRC+ is the best in the NL over the last 30 days. It’s a good thing that Votto is thinking about getting on-base more.

The Reds are rolling right now! The Diamondbacks are not. I hope that trend continues this evening. Go Reds!

  1. I’ll be the one to ask the daily question – why is Jose Peraza on this team?

  2. And that’s why Phillips is- and has been for 3 years now- a better hitter than Joey Votto. Votto is comfortable with taking very hittable pitches for walks, Phillips wants to drive in the runs. Love me some BP.

  3. Hamilton seems to see the ball so much better, this kid could be a huge weapon down the road.

    • I agree. If a .250 avg and .300 OBP can become his floor it would be great to watch.

  4. Thoughts on Disco potential trade to Texas? I say we better get a huge return for the guy or we hold fast.

    • There’s a big article on the site about it. I’m fully against it personally. It would have to be mind blowing prospects heavily in the Reds favor, like you said.

    • I agree. Hes cost controlled for some time and can be here when we are competitive. Color me rosy red, but I think we can be good soon with a couple of moves. I dont think its a 3 or 4 season project.

  5. Four K’s thru 3 for Sampson.
    Ray has 5 K’s thru 2.
Plenty of air swirling in the park.

  6. Votto just stayed with that pitch and hit it hard without trying to pull. He knows how to hit.

  7. to bad Votto couldnt get that *single* when there were runs to be driven in but at least jay bruce is clutch

    • Welllll….they were already leading, so there wasn’t that much pressure. 😉

    • If Jay had swung harder, he could have hit that ball over a mountain.

  8. Disco is a # 2 or 3 starter with control going forward, perfect guy to build around. Sampson is a big strong kid with nice late movement on his breaking stuff.

  9. I agree with pulling Sampson here. It would have been nice to get him through 5 for the win, but hes missing badly.

  10. Might just be my fandom but our bully could be tough. With Lorenzon,Iglesias and Finnegan figuring into the equation.

  11. Nice job by Sampson tonite! He’s always had a good arm but its just throwing strikes and getting ahead of hitters. If I was Baltimore or SF and in contention but running out some terrible starters….I’d try to get Straily or Sampson.

  12. No one ever wins the toyota.. I want that truck with Mr. Redlegs on the side..

  13. John Travolta and Kelly Preston at the park tonite. Anyone my age remember the old movie Mischief? Kelly Preston…!!!!

    • He may well be our closer in waiting. Cingranii throws to many pitches out of the zone.

  14. Wow. So THIS is what a MLB bullpen looks like. What a nice performance by the good guys tonight!
