The Cincinnati Reds (14-19) have taken the season advantage over the Pittsburgh Pirates (17-15) by winning four of the seven contests played between these two teams. Mother nature may disrupt tonight’s game as rain is forecast to fall at various times throughout tonight’s game.

Juan Nicasio 3.16 4.12 1.2 11.2% 23.9%
Alfredo Simon 9.86 6.93 2.6 9.9% 18.9%

Juan Nicasio had to leave his last start in the 5th innning against the Cubs after giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks. In his start prior to that, he pitched a gem against Cincinnati, allowing just three hits and a walk over seven shutout innings while striking out eight.

Alfredo Simon had his first quality start of the season last week against Milwaukee. This will be Simon’s 3rd start against the Pirates this year, having allowed five runs, 11 hits, and six walks over nine innings pitched in those first two games.

Well, no. That’s not a news headline. Rob Carpenter discussed the hypothetical earlier today at Redleg Nation.

Jay Bruce is back in the lineup, and the Reds are looking for a better showing against Nicasio then they had two weeks ago. Alfredo Simon is hoping last week’s start is the beginning of a positive trend. Mother Nature will try not to rain on our parade.

I see that the Enquirer is reporting that Mesoraco will indeed miss all of the remainder of this season. His surgery was completed yesterday and they found more damage to the labrum than previously anticipated. Recovery time of approximately 6 months is expected. He has had a whopping total of 98 plate appearances for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, 2 years of his 4 year contract. Ouch. Got to feel bad for him. I guess the team has an injury insurance policy, right? It’s not like they wouldn’t plan ahead for catastrophic events.

In the past, the Reds have stated that they have insurance policies on multi year contracts. But they do not take out insurance policies on one-year contracts .

At this point is there any reason why Devin, upon his return from this injury doesn’t take the fall and winter and stay in AZ and begin working on becoming the Reds next LF. I mean there is far less wear and tear on the body and he will need to start to show he is a team player.

I think he has been the consummate team player up to this point – he has done whatever they asked him to do. I believe if the Reds asked him to play left, he would do it.

I think at this point it is far from certain that Meso would be a better LF, offensively or defensively, than Duvall is turning out to be; and, Winker is waiting in the wings to clear the super 2 date zone.

For the Reds, I believe Meso is either a catcher or trade bait at this point.

Price said Mesoraco had more damage than realized to his shoulder. See ya next year, Devin.

does anybody know anything about bailey?

    • ohiojimw

I’ve seen two media reports of the run down Price gave on the injured pitchers and neither of them mentioned Bailey beyond him being listed among the DLed pitchers.

I say it’s HIGHLY UNLIKELY there is baseball tonight.

If they don’t play tonight, they could play a day/night on Wednesday. Both teams have Thursday off, but it’s the Reds’ only scheduled day off in a 27-day stretch, so it’s an unlikely makeup day.

If not tomorrow, PIT returns to town in mid-September.

Tonight’s game has been postponed – more details are forthcoming but there will not be a doubleheader tomorrow nor will the makeup be Thurs.

Not surprised about the PPD, but a little surprised there’s not a DH tomorrow.

Surely they’ll play a DH in September when PIT is back in town. No need to force them to make an extra trip.
