Reds vs. Brewers – May 5, 2016

The Reds (11-17) finally get a lull in their brutal schedule as they play the Brewers (11-16) today, hoping to climb out of the NL Central cellar. The Reds will wear the Los Rojos alternate jerseys tonight to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

Starting Pitchers

The following stats are from 2016:

Alfredo Simon takes the mound again coming off of another short-lived start. His last time out, Simon went 4.0 innings against the Pirates, allowing three runs and walking four. Simon has only last 5.0 innings once in his four starts this season.

Similar to Simon, Chase Anderson has also struggled lately, only lasting 4.1 and 4.0 innings in his last two starts. Anderson walked four and gave up six runs in each, including serving up three home runs in his most recent start. Luck hasn’t been on Anderson’s side though, as he has a .370 BABIP this season.

Disco + Homer

Return to throwing is hopefully nearing for two of the Reds steady arms, after each was shut down due to discomfort of some sort during rehab assignments. Despite the apparent progress, a return to the rotation still seems to be a long way off for each of the starters.

“I need to get over this, over the hump with this thing. I’m not back to square one by any means. It’s just making sure I don’t go back to square one and being cautious with it. I’ve come too far. I’ll take a couple of days and hopefully this will be a little quicker coming back with the rehab process because I’ve gotten stretched out,” DeSclafani said.

Concluding Thoughts

All I need during finals season is a Reds sweep of the Brewers. Then I will be happy. My future happiness starts today.

Go Reds!

  1. Some interesting #s

Duvall .922 OPS in GABP so far in his career
    Suarez .850 OPS in GABP (1.064 this year….all 6 HRs 16 RBIs)

Scooter Gennett…currently hurt but 4 HRs/10 walks before he got hurt and a nice looking offensive player. They obv need starting pitching…plus he’s from Cincinnati! I know teams don’t usually trade interdivision but the Sean Marshall trade worked so well:)

  2. All I need during finals season is a Reds sweep of the Brewers. Then I will be happy. My future happiness starts today.

Don’t put your future happiness in the hands of the Reds. You’ll be depressed a lot this year.

  3. I have lost track with the injuries, what is up with Moscot?- is he out indefinitely, is he on the DL and if no why not? Are Hayes and Ramizez still on the roster and if so why?
Is JJ Hoover available for anything besides a blowout (really would have liked him in the 9th yesterday). I know it is ridiculous just trying determine who actual is available to pitch if somehow the Reds make it through 5 with Simon pitching.

    • If I recall Iglesias went on DL to clear room for Alderman, but I missed who Lamb replaced, possibly Hayes. I do not think Moscot has pitched in 8 days, seems like a DL would make sense but Gameday shows him on the roster.
How long is this lead going to hold up with Simon on the hill?

  4. I’d love to still see Bruce in RF when the Reds hopefully finish the re-bulid circa 2018-19. He has a lot of good baseball left in him. But I highly doubt it. It’ll be sad to see him wearing a Blue Jays uniform or whoever.

  5. Jay Bruce is what he is….going to give you nothing offensively for 2-3 weeks at a time but we can’t find what he brings to the table anywhere else? 25+ HRs, good defense, good teammate, etc. I think Price could help him more by sitting him against tough lefties like Liriano but that’s not Jays fault!

    • Bruce actually hits lefties quite well.
And has more HR vs lefties than anyone else in baseball since 2010.
That’s including right or left handed batters…

  6. DatDudeBP got every bit of that one!
It’ll also be a sad day when Phillips is no longer a Redleg.
I’ve always said he may be a hot dog….but he’s OUR hot dog.

  7. hamilton slugging .354, votto .340 (before tonight’s game) hamilton has doubled tonight; it’s time we try hamilton at first and admit votto is done

  8. If these turn into bullpen games there could be a hundred runs scored this series

  9. While I want the Reds to win, I want the bullpen streak to continue. Am i a bad fan?

  10. Simon strong through 7. I would seriously give him a chance to finish this game. It’s not Bullpen proof yet

  11. Welsh made NO argument that was convincing to continue the switch hitting billy experiment.

  12. Simon still pitching nasty in the 8th. Hopefully he gets the CG and the streak stays intact. Price might pull Simon before the las out just to squash that talk.

    • He’s at108 pitches (2 outs in the 8th). I’d guess it’s his last inning. Hoover-proof

  13. Walk and homer. I guess its time to pull him. Bullpen has 3 run leadand an inning and a third to get through…. .

    • I don’t think Wood is anything special unfortunately. Just throwing 96 is good enough to close in AAA but he doesn’t have anything else really to get them off the fastball in the bigs

  14. Besides the obvious comments about the pointless double switch…..the streak lives.

  15. Duvall can hit some bombs but can he lay off the sliders down and away and draw enough walks? He’s interesting for sure! They should play him some at 3B and let Suarez play some SS just to experiment.

  16. Wow thank you Adam!!
Shoulda locked up my $100 on draftkings tonight!!

Along with most, I really like Hoover.
But at this point, what do you do? Send him down?
Maybe that will light a fire under him?
I want him to do well so bad like everyone else, but cmon…how far can u let this go?
He’s got the stuff to pitch well as we’ve seen..

    • Im not sure how you can light a fire under him since i am sure he is desperate to get out of this mess. But you sure cant have him keeping a roster spot for long

  17. I almost would have been disappointed if the pen didn’t give up a run … almost double the disappointment if Hoover didn’t give it up via a long ball.

Even when we are winning against a wretched team … same story, new day.

  18. Home Run Hoover strikes again. Really feel for this guy, seems like a good fellow.

  19. Glad to see a Reds win. But guessing Price wanted to make sure the bullpen’s embarrassing streak continued by bringing in “home run” Hoover. Mission accomplished….
