Both of the Red’s Rookie level teams started action last week, so for the first time this season we have a full slate of teams to talk about.  There have also been several recent moves made to add some depth to the Reds two top minor league teams.  Let’s see what’s going on down on the farm.

AAA Louisville Bats

OF Steve Selsky (.317/.386/.428/.814) was placed on the DL with a left knee injury and OF Kyle Waldrop (.277/.313/.430/.742) was called up from AA Pensacola.  Selsky was having a great season at AAA that the Reds organization have seemingly overlooked while they ran the likes of Skip Schumaker, Kris Negron, Ivan DeJesus, and Chris Dominguez out to LF to fill in for the injured Marlon Byrd.

SP Josh Smith (2.16 ERA in 4 GS at AA and 3.56 ERA in 8 GS at AAA) got the call up to Reds to fill the open rotation slot due to Jon Moscot’s shoulder injury.  Layne Somsen was placed on the DL with a fractured toe.  The Reds traded with Pittsburgh to obtain 29 year old RH RP Collin Balestar who has a Major League career 5.30 ERA in 185 IP with Washington and Detroit from 2008 – 2012.  Balestar had a 3.07 ERA with the Pirates AAA team in 14.2 IP and he will join the Bat’s bullpen.  The Reds signed 31 year old RH SP Matt Buschmann who has a AAA career 5.12 ERA in 538 IP.  This year Buschmann had a 3.89 ERA in 13 GS for Tampa Bay’s AAA team and he tossed 7 IP allowing just two runs in his first start with the Bats.  The Reds also signed 29 year old LH RP Joe Paterson who has a Major League career 6.25 ERA in 40 IP with Arizona from 2011 – 2014.  Paterson has a AAA career 3.41 ERA in 208 IP.

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

2B Ryan Wright (.245/.320/.320/.640) was placed on the DL and C Yovan Gonzalez (.171/.237/.286/.523) was activated from the DL.  The Reds released 29 year old C Lou Marson (.263/.333/.368/.702).

The Reds traded with Arizona for 24 year old LH RP Patrick Schuster.  Schuster has a Minor league AA career 2.61 ERA in 51 IP and a 4.50 ERA in 18 IP at the AAA level.

High A Daytona Tortugas

The Reds resigned RHP Matt Magill (Elbow surgery) and assigned him to the Daytona roster and placed him on the DL.  Nick Travieso was placed on the DL.  Travieso has not pitched since 06/15 when he left that game in the 1st inning after a comeback liner caught him in the arm and forced him to leave the game.  RH RP Scott Brattvet (1.80 ERA in 25 IP at Dayton) was added to the Daytona roster.  Brattvet after a good start in Dayton was sent to AAA to help out for a few games before being reassigned to Daytona.

Low A Dayton Dragons

Argenis Aldazoro, a 22 year old LH 1B who was hitting .400/.500/.500/1.000 in 10 AB for the AZL Reds, was promoted to Dayton.  Aldazoro hit .325/.356/.575/.931 in 212 AB last year at Rookie level Billings.

Rookie Billings Mustangs

The Reds 1st round draft pick in June, C Tyler Stephenson, is off to a hot start at Rookie level Billings.  Stephenson is batting .417/.563/.583/1.146 in his first 16 PA.  3B Brantley Bell (1.167 OPS) and 2B Mitch Piatnik (1.083 OPS) are also off to quick starts.

Rookie AZL Reds

There has been a Juan Duran sighting.  The 23 year old RH OF is hitting .455/.533/.818/1.352 in his first 11 AB.  Duran hit .243/.297/.464/.761 with 17 HR last year at AA Pensacola.  RF Raul Wallace (1.077 OPS) and CF Jose Siri (.842 OPS) are also off to good starts.

;why is Juan Duran on the AZL roster and not with AA ?

Any word on what the injury was? I guess Price would not want the media to let us know or it might give the other minor league teams an advantage.

Is the Selsky injury serious. I know there have been several responses to my inquiries recently but I find it weird when a young guy like him does get a look. Word seems to be that he is not a great OF and does not have the power to be a corner OF guy, but compare him to Schumaker and make me understand

Schumaker is a 10 yr veteran with WS and Playoff experience.

      Selsky is not. Not. Not.

When I saw Buschmann had opted out of his minor league deal with the Rays, I was hopeful that Jocketty would kick the tires there. I didn’t know he had signed with the Reds. This will quietly be a nice pick up by Jocketty. Buschmann will be the next rookie starting pitcher to start for the Reds. They’ll switch out Buschmann for Smith soon and Donovan Hand will be back swapping places with Villareal soon.
Has there been a Jesse Winker sighting? Not hearing much about the Reds top prospect this year. When your top hitting prospect is barely league average at the AA Southern League, this is a problem.
