This week it was Marlon Byrd being assigned to Pensacola for a rehab assignment.  Then Tony Cingrani (shoulder) and Jon Moscot (shoulder) suffered injuries that will require stays on the DL.  Let’s check out what kind of moving and shaking has happened down of the farm this week..

AAA Louisville Bats

Pedro Villarreal, Carlos Contreras, and Donovan Hand were all recalled to Cincy from Louisville to restock the depleted bullpen.  Joel Bender (3.70 ERA at Daytona) and Scott Brattvet (1.80 ERA at Dayton) were assigned to the Bat’s to back fill the bullpen.

Brennan Boesch, who had a great spring training, had a very rough time of it coming off the bench for the Reds was sent down to the Bats.  Hopefully he will get back on track and provide some offensive punch like he did last year in AAA (.332/.381/.636/1.017).  Josh Satin, .298/.378/.456/.834, continues to hit at Louisville.  Jason Bourgeois, .192/.300/.269/.569, is not faring well so far with the bat in his rehab assignment.

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

Marlon Byrd went 1 for 5 with a HR in his first rehab start with Pensacola last night.  Jesse Winker is hitting .315/.377/.481/.859 in June to raise his season totals to .251/.351/.357/.709.  Good to see him continuing to have a good June.  Kyle Waldrop, .278/.313/.436/.749 still having a nice season as well.

Robert Stephenson has been pitching well as of late and has lowered his ERA from 5.26 to 3.86.  Tim Adleman has a 2.42 ERA through 12 GS to pace the rotation.

High A Daytona Tortugas

OF Sebastian Elizalde, .262/.313/.423/.736 is quietly having a good season at Daytona.  Phil Ervin (.266/.351/.439/.790) and Alex Blandino (.290/.368/.403/.771) continue to lead the offense for the Tortugas.

The league average ERA in the FSL is 3.25.  The Tortugas have three SP under that with Barrett Astin (2.19), Nick Travieso (2.98), and Amir Garrett (3.18).  Sal Romano (3.59) and Jackson Stephens (3.72) round out the rotation.

Low A Dayton Dragons

CF Brian O’Grady is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.  The LH OF/1B is hitting .263/.387/.423/.810 with great 16% BB% and 18 SB in 22 tries.  Those would be some great numbers for a lead off hitter.  Hopefully he can stick as a CF as he progresses and maintain a good BB%.

The league average ERA in the Midwest league is 3.67.  The Dragons have four SP under that with Tejay Antone (2.75), Seth Varner (3.14), Tyler Mahle (3.16), and Wyatt Strahan (3.18).  Mark Armstrong (2.86) was also better than the average before recently going on the DL.

Rookie Billings Mustangs

The Mustangs begin play today.

Rookie AZL Reds

They can’t really be planning to bring Byrd back this weekend. Are they trying to guarantee 550ab?

    • Redgoggles

I had the same thought, but perhaps he would be a more attractive trade piece now that the vesting option is less likely to happen.

Is it still a tradition that a rehabbing major leaguer caters the first pregame lunch or dinner?

    • lwblogger2

He usually at least takes them out for dinner. MLBers on rehab assignments also often bring bats, gloves, shoes, and other gear that they get from manufacturers. The minor leaguers often treasure that gear even more than they do dinner!

Waldrop’s numbers seem to be dropping ever so slightly. Could we get a breakdown by month on him?

    • Tom Diesman

      Waldrop

      Month AVG OBP SLG OPS
      April .242 .271 .394 .665
      May .304 .331 .482 .813
      June .288 .356 .404 .760

His BB% and SO% are both better in June. That’s a good sign.

Not as bad as I feared; actually still pretty good. Thanks Tom

I know Selsky isn’t “toolsy” as other prospects, but the dude has hit for above average at each stop and deserves a chance at some point.
