The Reds and Marlins are even at 3-3 in their season series this year. The winner of this game wins the season series. I’m not sure if that will mean much at the end of the year except for bragging rights purposes. Either one of these teams are going to have to get hot down the stretch if they’re going to reach the playoffs.

Discuss the game here, Reds fans. Or if you’re like me, you’ll be flipping back and forth between the game and the PGA Championship with the golf taking full focus once the leaders tee-off. Go Reds and Ricky Fowler (Or Jim Furyk/Steve Stricker if either can make an early run)!

Lineup:
1. Negron 2B
2. Bruce RF
3. Frazier 1B
4. Mesoraco C
5. Ludwick LF
6. Heisey CF
7. Santiago 3B
8. Cozart SS
9. Cueto P

  1. Whoa Bundy!

I like BHam getting a day off. He needs it.

    • ohiojimw

Yes Hamilton needs the day but I don’t like the message (not) sent by giving last night’s TOOTBLANer in Chief a start right after his foible.

  2. Kurt Frost

Good. Mes is in there. The personal catcher crap is shenanigans.

    • Sparky

May have something to do with Pena’s hammy.

      • ohiojimw

Probably everything to do with Peña’s leg since Price was saying yesterday that they hoped he would be ready to catch today/

    • drew

Why..because you dont like it? If Cuteo feels more comfortable with Pena and Pena is healthy then that is all we need to know. Its Cuteos call and should be.

      • Tom Diesman

Probably because it weakens an already pathetically weak offense.

      • drew

Says who? Oh says the computer. If Pena being behind the plate makes Cuteo more comfortable then that is far more important then whatever little less offense it might bring by him being in the game.

      • drew

Yes the computer. ..that device that all stat geeks look to for the numbers that tell them who to play and how to play and when to play. The device that removes all of the human factor from a game played by humans.

      • Steve Mancuso

What if I get my statistics from the newspaper? Stupid newspaper.

      • tct

I’ve never seen anybody troll as hard as you, drew. A pitcher should not get to pick his catcher for all kinds of reasons. Sets a bad precedent, shows favoritism, causes hard feelings, etc. Plus pitchers aren’t thinking about the whole picture. They are only thinking about the pitching side of the game, but the hitting side is just as important. Mes is the better all around player, period.

      • drew

Couldnt disagree more. The SP is the most important player in each and every game. If he finds it more comfortable to have player X be his catcher then you do that. This is a game of humans and to discount that is just foolish. This is the problem with looking at the game solely based on stats. If you do you are dooming your team.

      • Tom Diesman

TCT didn’t use or mention one stat in his defense against allowing pitchers to chose his own personal catcher. Yet you ignored all his non statistical reasons, which as he pointed out, there are many. So share with us how you feel about setting the precedent of allowing pitchers to choose their catcher, how that will affect the roster, and the team chemistry. Will it get Tucker Barnhart, a defensive whiz called up and playing nearly regulary? Will it turn SP into prima donnas and affect the clubhouse chemistry? Will it create hard feeling between SP and the C they don’t choose, such that their ill will could affect the games when their first choice for catcher is out due to injury? How will you feel about a rookie coming in for a spot start and get to select his own catcher, from a couple of guys he hasn’t thrown to all season? Or would he get to have Walt bring up his personal catcher from AA with him? Is such a far reach from this concept that the IFs might soon get to vote and decide Jack Hannahan receives the ball way better at 1B and then Votto has to hit the pine too? These questions, none which remotely have anything to do with stats, but with humans and feelings, and the way a ballclub is run, only touch the surface of the number of issues this practice would raise. So if you want to continue to discuss this, lets talk about these things and not just sit and yell “stats suck”.

      • Kurt Frost

You think the computer is wrong? Was it wrong about Simon?

      • drew

The computer is a tool to use to a degree but not something that all decisions should be based on.

      • Steve Mancuso

“All decisions should be based on the computer.” – No one ever.

      • Michael J Hampton

Yes, it is a game of human beings forming a team. As a team they must learn to work together for the common good of the team. Having Mesoraco in the game provides the team with the best offensive potential. When Pena starts behind the plate it weakens the offense because you are basically replacing Mesoraco’s bat with Santiago or an equivalent player’s bat. If Mesoraco is good enough to catch the other 4 starters (and he is) he is good enough to catch Cueto. Cueto and Mes need to get together and work out what ever adjustments they need to make this happen. Price needs to facilitate this. This is part of his accountability, he stated that there would be no personal catchers before the season started.

      • drew

Maybe he has grown as a manager and with talking with Cuteo came to feel it was best for the team as a whole (because the game is more then just offense) to go with Pena as Cuteos catcher. Again there is more to this game then just offense and you have to listen to your players.

      • tct

Drew, you keep making these strawmen arguments about computers and stats not knowing everything. Nobody said these guys are a bunch of robots, but you act like we’re all arguing for a computer to be the manager. It’s ridiculous. The funny thing is that you keep talking about the human element of the game while advocating a position that would be sure to cause resentment and discord in the clubhouse. If Cueto gets to pick his catcher do all the other starters get to pick too? What if they all pick Pena? Does Meso sit the bench even though he’s been one of the top hitters in the league on a rate basis? If only Cueto gets to pick his catcher then what do the rest of the team think about that? What does Meso think about that? What if Cueto wanted Santiago to play third instead of Frazier? It’s just a stupid idea to let a player make decisions that the manager should be making.

      • drew

You really believe all players are treated equal do you? Cuteo is your ACE if he is more comfortable with Pena behind the plate then you listen to your ACE.

      • tct

Wow it seems like me and Tim are thinking the exact same things. I made my post and then saw that tim had already made the same points. I mean it just seems like common sense to me. I think drew just likes to argue

      • drew

No he is not but he is your ACE and a good manager is going to listen to his ACE.

      • Kurt Frost

Could you be making this argument at a worse time?

  3. Jake

Like some other posters, I think I’m gonna take the day off and just check the results later on. That way I’ll be pleasantly surprised if they win or not too surprised if they lose. Still a big fan but this team has been brutal to watch

    • Tom Reed

You are right on, and the front office has done nothing to alleviate the situation.

  4. MesosBat

    Let’s count the mistakes today

    1. Cement mixer to Stanton

    • Tom Diesman

The little chalk cloud from his bat at the point of contact was pretty cool.

  5. Michael J Hampton

There’s why you want Mes in the game. Nothing against Pena, but the Reds need Mesoraco’s offense in the game even when Pena is healthy.

    • vegastypo

yeah, especially against a lefty. i could understand if Mes needed a day off, and/or against a tough right handed pitcher, but geez, enough with this personal catcher stuff.

  6. Kurt Frost

What is that horrible sqeal when the Reds strike out a batter?

  7. Kurt Frost

Man those home runs would not have been hit with Pena behind the dish.

  8. Vicferrari

Gameday shows 5 of the 6 pitches very close to strikes to Ramon, how close were they and how many times does a batter take 6 pitches in a row? I would think this would be pretty rare

  9. Vicferrari

I would think this situation is acceptable to sacrifice right?

  10. BigRedSaguaro

Come on man, runners 2nd and 3rd , 1 out, at least 1 run should score

  11. ToddAlmighty

Okay.. second attempt. Bases loaded, just walked a guy. 2-0 count. Make him throw you a strike!

  12. ToddAlmighty

Whhhhy, Mes? He just walked the previous two batters and started you off with a ball. Why swing before there’s a called strike?

    • ToddAlmighty

Agreed, more Pena catching Cueto, please. Lol

You have to wonder if Cueto is looking at the 2 HR/6 RBI Mesoraco is sitting on today and is rethinking being okay with only pitching to Pena.

      • RedAlert

Try to convince another certain poster ( whose name I will not mention cause we all know who it is ) of that

      • Thegaffer

Exactly. Devin needs to learn another position to keep him in the lineup in future years.

      • drew

Without looking I have to believe the reds this season in games where Pena has caught Cuteo the reds have won more then they loss.

      • tct

Maybe you should get one of those “stat geeks” you are always making fun of to explain the concepts of correlation and causation to you, Drew. You might learn something.

  13. Zippy

I bet Cueto is starting to feel a little more comfortable with Mes now.

  14. Kurt Frost

I almost forgot… You can’t walk across home plate!

  15. Michael J Hampton

Mes 20 HR, 61 RBI in 79 games, basically half a season. Reds are playing in their 118th game, so Mes has missed 39 games between the DL and some rest days,

    • Vicferrari

Hard not to argue with finding him another position on the days to rest as a catcher, unfathomable he could not start in an AL ballpark

      • Michael J Hampton

Yeah I like him behind the plate, offensive catchers are a rarity, but it would be nice if he could get another dozen or so starts at another position to keep his bat in the lineup without wearing him down behind the plate.

      • ToddAlmighty

He was on the bench not once, but twice since the AS break when the Reds had the availability of the DH.

  16. MesosBat

Steve Smith last seen throwing up the stop sign to Mesoraco…

  17. Vicferrari

Not the greatest game from Negron, not the brightest move batting him lead-off, not sure who should be if Hamilton is given the day off…Heisey? Santiago-who has one of the higher OBP on the season (right around his career average as well)

    • Tom Diesman

Negron is coming back to earth after a great run. I’d like to see Elmore brought up and get a look at him before Phillips comes back.

  18. hof13

Just now getting a chance to post – Mesoraco has as may HR so far this year as Hanigan had his entire career with the Reds.

  19. ToddAlmighty

Looks like Cueto will go 8. Turns out Mesoraco catching him didn’t result in a 4.2 inning, 7 run start… oh wait, it did. Just for the other starting pitcher.

  20. ToddAlmighty

Come on now Santiago.. don’t be messing things up when it’s already almost over.

  21. ToddAlmighty

What’s the MLB record for most games playing a season without a first baseman?

    • RedAlert

Reds must be getting close to thst one too – along with the TOOTBLAN and one run loss record

  22. Sparky

Its funny how one bad game or two has people on here calling for AAA help.

    • Vicferrari

Lets cut everybody while we at it

  23. BigRedSaguaro

    Helluva catch there Bruce !!

    • ToddAlmighty

You can also be sure that Bruce’s dinner bill will be on Cueto tonight.

  24. VaRedsFan

Kudos to those fans for not interfering.

  25. BigRedSaguaro

Jack’s on deck, let’s see what happens

  26. Vicferrari

So is Cueto going for 2 CG’s in a row?

  27. vegastypo

from twitter: Great diving play by Clayton Kershaw to turn #Brewers squeeze attempt into DP. Brewers have run into 4 outs on bases in past 3 innings

    • ToddAlmighty

Hope the Brewers unleash a good 5 or 6 runs on Kershaw. Need to make it clear that Cueto is 2014’s NL Cy Young.

      • drew

Kershaw may be best player in NL. Could be this year Cy and MVP.
