Pirates at Reds (July 13, 2014)

The Reds and Pirates conclude their series with today’s rubber match at GABP. The first two games have been exciting and I expect nothing short of that in today’s finale. Both teams are looking for a win and the series in order to stick right with the Brewers and Cardinals who are now tied atop the division.

Today’s game concludes the first half of the regular season. We will all get to relax for a few days and enjoy the Homerun Derby, the All-Star game, and a day off. Let’s hope the Reds have some momentum heading into those 3 “off” days.

    • He’ll eventually be the only competition Hamilton has for ROY.

  1. it’s stuff like that makes me want to dial back on this “aggressiveness” push. the guy can hit fly balls, you know??? why do that??

    • Two outs I can see. 1 out, not as much but P on deck. So maybe not as bad as first blush.

    • I don’t hate the call. They had the Pirates dead to rights on it – They weren’t ready for it at all. Just really bad luck on the pitch going in the dirt and Martin managing to squeeze it.

      • Martin has had some unbelievably luck snags this series. I doubt he even saw the bounce into his glove last night on that play at the plate. Oh well, them’s the breaks.

      • The guys can’t throw strikes and is wild, so it would seem risky to think you would get a pitch good enough to bunt on a squeeze, but hindsight is always easy.

  2. Well before that squeeze play…I don’t understand why Pittsburgh even bothered to pitch to Negron with Cueto up.

    • They were going to pitch around Negron to get to Cueto. That being said, the RP was all over the place and it was a risky play.

    • Rookie at the plate, Cueto on deck, guy on the mound throwing wild stuff. Would have been hard for Negron to get a solid swing on anything and then you risk a DP from Cueto or at least having to try and score Mes with 2 outs. Totally caught the Pirates by surprise. The more I think about it the more I like the call.

    • Can everyone (especially you) please stop throwing around the word “ignorant”? First of all, there was nothing ignorant about that play. It was an aggressive call and it didn’t work. Second, everyone involved in making that call and executing the play has forgotten more about baseball than you or anyone here will ever know so it’s not even the right word to use.

  3. I don’t mind the squeeze call there with one out. And the pitcher on deck. It’s just bad luck that the pitch was do bad that negron couldn’t get the bag on it.

  4. Batter who homered earlier in the game, slow runner at third, pitcher who’s been consistently wild… I guess Price figured it was a good time to squeeze because NOBODY would expect such a strange decision.

  5. Come on. You can’t let Walker beat you like that. Keep hard and inside. And of course, Cozart airmails it on the next play with Martin (of all people) running. You got to wonder where their heads are at today.

  6. “Holy Moses, do you say ‘thank you Russel Martin.'” Thom nailed that one.

  7. Every time the reds fail to cash in on golden scoring opportunities , it bites them in the rear – never fails , never

  8. Have to think this would be a perfect day for two innings of Chapman. He didn’t pitch yesterday. All Star break tomorrow. Broxton pitched yesterday. If they can get the lead to the eighth inning, that’s what I’d do.

  9. No reason to leave Cueto in here. Pitcher spot not due for nine batters, power lefty at the plate.

  10. I kind of like having Pena out there at 1B when Cueto is pitching. Still get Mes’ bat in the lineup and you get Pena out there to help keep Cueto’s head on straight.

  11. What is going on with Cozart? Two errors in one inning? This game is giving me an ulcer.
