The Reds are off to a disappointing 12-15 start that has them in 3rd place in the NL Central. This week let’s check in across the minors to see how each of the Red’s full season minor league teams are faring.

AAA Louisville Bats

The Bats are 11-14 and are in 3rd place in the International League West. SP Josh Smith (2.45 ERA) and Jeff Francis (2.72) are leading the rotation while a struggling David Holmberg (14.46) has found his way onto the DL. Closer Jumbo Diaz has yet to be scored on in nine appearances. 2B Ruben Gotay is still hitting well with a slash line of .319/.400/.571/.971. Recently recalled C Tucker Barnhart .250/.327/.455/.781 is the only other Bat putting up good numbers at the plate. OF Ryan LaMarre and Josh Fellhauer are both on the DL also.

AA Pensacola Blue Yahoos

The Blue Wahoos are 10-16 and sitting in 5th place in the Southern League South. They are led on the hill by SP Jon Moscot (2.08) and Michael Lorenzen (1.88). Reliever Shane Dyer (0.93) heads up the bullpen. LF Donald Lutz (.370/.418/.726/1.144) is leading the way at the plate. C Bryan Anderson (.310/.379/.621/.999) and 3B Juan Silverio (.333/.377/.528/.904) are also hitting well.

High A Bakersfield Blaze

The Blaze are in 1st place in the California League North with a 19-8 record.   SP Ben Lively (0.31) is leading the way from the mound with reliever Carlos Gonzalez having yet to allow a run while notching 6 saves. 1B Marquez Smith is tearing it up thus far with a slash line of .321/.455/.655/1.110. C Chris Berset (.319/.407/.553/.961) and RF Kyle Waldrop (.396/.451/.525/.976) are swinging the bats good as well. Hot hitting OFs Junior Arias(.394/.459/.606/1.066), and Jesse Winker (.333/.413/.551/.964) are both on the DL.

Low A Dayton Dragons

The Dragons lead the Midwest League Eastern division with a 16-9 record. SP Ismael Guillon (1.59), Sal Ramano (2.33), Daniel Wright (1.62) and Nick Travieso (1.23) head up a strong pitching staff. Relievers Zack Weiss and Alejandro Chacin have yet to allow a run. Sebastian Elizalde is hitting .324/.495/.559/1.053 while splitting time between LF and 1B. CF Beau Amaral (.329/.377/.529/.905) is also off to a good start for the Dragons.

  1. What is going on with Phillip Ervin?

  2. Good stuff. Although, when a top 20 prospect in the organization like Yorman Rodriguez is hitting .325/.361/.442, it would be nice to see that here. That is pretty big news down on the farm considering he is a potential “five tool” guy, right?

Do you know how long Winkler and Arias are expected to be on the DL or what their injuries are?

    • Winker is suffering from a conssion resulting from his colision with the wall in LF. The wall wins those collisions 100% of the time! He should return to active status soon. Arias is out for a while unfortunately.

  3. The 40-man roster is an absolute mess and that mess is responsible for a lot of the difficulties at the major league level this season. Nick Christiani and Curtis Partch are two of the occupants on the 40-man roster. Jumbo Diaz is NOT one of the occupants on the 40-man roster. That doesn’t even address the issue of Logan Ondrusek on the 25-man roster. Of those 4 relief pitchers, Jumbo Diaz is by far and away the best of the lot.

    1.66 ERA; 1.031 WHIP; 9.9 SO/9; 2.86 SO/BB for Diaz in 2013 @ AAA
    3.86 ERA; 1.179 WHIP; 7.9 S)/9; 2.04 SO/BB for Christiani in 2013 @ AAA
    4.13 ERA; 1.376 WHIP; 9.8 SO/9; 2.58 SO/BB for Partch in 2013 @ AAA
    4.09 ERA; 1.255 WHIP; 8.7 SO/9; 3.31 SO/BB for Ondrusek in 2013

    0.00 ERA; 0.909 WHIP; 10.6 SO/9; 3.25 SO/BB for Diaz in 2014 @ AAA
    4.91 ERA; 1.273 WHIP; 4.1 SO/9; 1.25 SO/BB for Christiani in 2014
    7.11 ERA; 2.211 WHIP; 7.1 SO/9; 2.50 SO/BB for Ondrusek in 2014

Broxton was returned to the active 25-man roster before he was 100% and after a VERY abbreviated rehab assignment. Marshall was returned to the active 25-man roster before he was 100% and after a VERY abbreviated rehab assignment.

No wonder Bryan is struggling with his bullpen management when he is left with relievers with lesser capability and relievers not ready to fully compete at the major league level.

  4. The Reds made a mistake not resigning Zack Duke, who has been terrific for the Brewers, should have been Marshall insurance. I agree with calling up Jumbo, he deserves the chance, send someone down. I would go with Christiani or Ondrusek.

    Our BP should be:
Chapman, Broxton, Marshall, Hoover, LeCure, Duke, Jumbo

  5. I agree, Free Jumbo

I totally agree with Josh. Why Zack Duke was not resigned is a mystery to me.

I do understand Hoover on the big league roster. I have liked the trial of Partch.

I do not get the use of Ondrusek. at any time.

I was a Beslisle fan when he was with the Reds, and I did not want to see the Reds give up on him. I guess we all have our favorites to round out the pen.

Duke would look great in in Red today though
