Reds at Pirates (April 23, 2014)

The Reds look to go for at least a split in this series in Pittsburgh with a win today.  Whoever wins today’s game sets themselves up with the chance at winning this 4-game series in tomorrow’s matinee tilt.  Alfredo Simon will look to continue his outstanding performance in the Reds rotation with another good start tonight.  I’d take a performance like that turned in by Cueto last night!

Discuss the game here, and GO REDS!

1. Hamilton CF
2. Votto 1B
3. Phillips 2B
4. Bruce RF
5. Frazier 3B
6. Bernadina LF
7. Mesoraco C
8. Santiago SS
9. Simon P

  1. I love WAR, but just realized a flaw in it. The baserunning component doesn’t make distinctions between coach’s decision outs (such as Votto being thrown out at 2nd or at home) and TOOTBLANs. At least I don’t think it does.

  2. Votto should of rode Nibbles on that double steal.
    Hamilton is hearing up.
BP needs to move down to 6 in the lineup. He must be hurt.

  3. Praying that Skipper doesn’t sit Billy tomorrow. Back-to-back 2-hit days. Let him get his groove on.

    • Charlotte, we are only beginning to see the potential benefit of a bonafide speedster on the Reds. He is a hard worker and really gets after it – remember last year? No one stepped up for the Reds in September and demonstrated grit and determination – well Billy does every night – and the long term effects will be a true asset to this team.

  4. Mesoraco needs to bat higher if only because he’s losing out on extra ABs. Didn’t need it today, but if you had BP and Mesoraco and you could give one 5 AB in a game and the other 4 AB. Who would you choose to give which to? (Rhetorical question because Mesoraco is hitting .525)

  5. Has anyone observed the crowd changing the pitcher’s name in any other city except Pittsburgh? I don’t think I have.

    • Sam is more valuable as a high leverage pitcher rather than a guy who’s only allowed to pitch in the 9th with a lead, but that lead being no more than 3 runs.

      • Agree. I really meant what you said. The highest leverage situations should belong to Lecure.

      • Yeah. Sort of classless. I’m starting to dislike the Pirates more than I dislike the Cardinals.

    • Absolutely, and just saw that he was recently released – as the time always comes for each and every player to eventually hang them up

  6. McCutchen has 4 HRs this season. 3 of them are against the Reds. Enough of that, please.

  7. Nice start by Simon, and some good relief by the bullpen too! Nice job against the Buccos! Hopefully we can keep it going. Go Reds!!!

  8. Very good win for the Reds. Slowly but surely the Reds seems to be rounding into shape. Simon battled back from an ominous start to record another good outing. Another win in tomorrows day game would definitely be an afternoon delight. Lets get em again tomorrow. Go Reds! Adios Amigos.

  9. And for anyone interested in being updated on the improvement on Billy Hamilton, he is now hitting .300 in his last 10 games (12-40). How about that.

    • Bullpen management looked a lot better tonight – with the complete game by Johnny Cueto not hurting at all. And as a result the sting from Monday night’s loss is slowly fading. Maybe Brian’s options were actually limited and he did the best with what he had. Nice turn around – now let’s make it 3 on the Bucs tomorrow.
