Opening Day Edition, Cardinals at Reds (2014.03.31)

It is Opening Day in Cincinnati! Growing up, and still today, Opening Day has ranked just behind Christmas as my favorite day of the year.  It is the beginning of baseball season.  The standings are erased.  Everyone is on an even playing field.  Everyone has hopes that this is the year that their team will be World Champions!

What can we expect from the 2014 Cincinnati Reds?  There are a lot of questions and concerns.  There is also a lot of hope and optimism surrounding this club.  Perhaps that is what makes this first day of the season so great.  What can we expect?  No one knows!  But we are about to watch it all unfold over the next 7 months.

While there is debate over whether today should be a national holiday, rest assured that only one city in America treats today as if it is a holiday.  That city is Cincinnati.  So sit back Reds fans!  Enjoy the holiday.  Enjoy the pageantry that is baseball.  Enjoy the fireworks, cheering crowds, and excitement.  But know that today is just day 1 of a 162 game marathon.  Whether our beloved Redlegs win today or not, it is a long season.  But also know, baseball is back! There isn’t another day like Opening Day!  And there is no city that does Opening Day like Cincinnati!

  1. I think we forgot sometimes last year since he wasn’t around, but Cueto is really really good. 5 innings, 74 pitches, 2 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts against a very good Cardinals team. This is why the Reds Ace conversation begins and ends with Cueto. Looks like he’s aiming for his fourth straight year of sub-3 ERA.

    • Bit early for that kind of projection but yeah, we missed JC a lot. Excited to see if Bailey/Cingrani/Latos can give him a run for that ace moniker this year.

    • Crazy graphic just got put up.. Cueto has the 2nd lowest ERA among ALL starters in MLB since 2011. Only Kershaw has lower.

    • To be fair Wainwright is pretty good. Billy isn’t the only one up there looking like he’s swinging a toothpick.

    • eh, Johnny is a good bunter and an athlete. I think it was the right move there.

    • Cueto is a TERRIBLE hitter and a very good bunter. That was absolutely the right move.

      • Just like that. Another quick one and he could go 8 innings. That would be a god send with our bullpen issues and Cingrani pitching Wednesday.

  2. Bruce’s approach is DEFINITELY more patient. Looks like Votto is finally rubbing off on him.

  3. 4 pitch walk followed by 1st pitch lunge swing, try to pull by Cozart

    • Just a terrible AB by Cozart, you have to wonder what he was thinking.

  4. It’ll be a darn shame if Cueto loses on one bad pitch…come on offense, let’s get going here.

  5. Realistically, if the Reds are going to be successful this season, the Reds are going to be in A LOT of these 1-0, 2-1 type games. We better get used to this.

  6. Wow…Hamilton’s going to be in Louisville before the end of April at this rate…

  7. Thought experiment: could anybody imagine MLB scheduling nearly 1/3 of the season series between the Yankees and Red Sox in the first 9 games of the season? Nah, me either.

  8. Cueto was downright dominant minus one pitch all day. Such a waste of a terrific start. The offense needs to get their collective heads out of their butts.

    • Just a really well timed bunt. Put it down right past Parra. No one could make a play on it. Wasn’t even a throw.
