Game Thread: Mets at Reds (2013.09.23)

The finish line is in sight.  The Reds are on the verge of clinching a post-season spot but still have eyes on winning the division.  The Reds need a lot of wins over these last six games and need some help from the Nationals and Cubs.  Anything is possible.  It should be fun to watch.

With that said, the Reds can only control their fate and by that they must take care of business these next three games versus the Mets.  While it doesn’t make it impossible, anything less than a sweep would make the Reds’ chances of a Central division crown pretty unlikely at this point.  So Reds, it is time for you to GO!

Discuss the game here Reds fans!

  1. Let’s hope Mr. Jocketty and Mr. Castellini are fortunate enough to re-sign Mr. Choo.

  2. Really glad Phillips did not come up. Kinda dumb not to walk Choo.

Let’s go Nats, Cubs and Mets did not help you, but fight. Mujica’s blown his last 2 saves if I recall

That’s the MVP of the team you’re talking about.

  3. Now we need a rally by the Nats in the top of the 9th….down by a run.

  4. Choo showing BP and Ludwick how it’s done.

The Phillips AB in the 9th made me sick. He was so overanxious to be the hero.

Anyway: Reds win, Reds win !!!

    Come on, Nats !

  5. Nats are not going to beat anybody now. They’re toast and they will roll over.

    • @Johnu1: It will be interesting to see if the Nats continue to play hard. It’s largely up to the manager. In the last weekend of 1999, Johnson had his Dodgers roll over to the Astros on purpose, sending Gary Sheffield and Kevin Brown, both in their prime, home.

  6. All 3 teams in the Central came through with one-run victories. Did the Reds just not clinch?

Keep thinking the Pirates will collapse, but one more win by the Reds or loss by the Pirates assures the Reds hosting play-in game if they win the weekend series. Of course I will take a sweep by the Pirates if the Reds can win next Tuesday in the ‘Burg

    • @vicferrari: Right even if Reds go into the weekend series 1 game behind the Pirates all they have to do is win 2 of those 3 and they get the play-in game at home, because of 10-9 record vs. the Pirates.

Did you know that mlbnetwork radio was saying all Sunday nite long that the Pirates would get home field in that scenario, based on a 9-9 head to head record and a better record in the NL Central ? What incompetence.

  7. Well, it’s a 162-game schedule and you have to win some ugly ones. This qualifies. I’ll take it.

  8. Now I know what it feels like to be a laundry item put through one of those old washing machines that had those two rollers that wrung the the water out of anything that passed through them. Whew! What a game. Lets get em again tomorrow and than sweep. I’m greedy, I want a division championship for my Redlegs. Go Reds! Adios Amigos.

  9. Nats had 2 on and none out in the 8th, sent Spann up to bunt, Davey doing his best Dusty tribute

  10. Pirates celebrating? Strange. I cannot figure out why Billy Hamilton did not stay in game, maybe I don’t understand the options once he pinchran. Then, I don’t understand choice of Heisey in the eighth to pinch hit instead of Paul and then not using Heisey defensively either. Then, why not squeeze with no out in ninth. Just don’t comprehend sticking with Ludwick on bad night, wasting multiple players and not squeezing in obvious situation. Alas, Dusty escapes the consequences of poor decisions.

    • @jas_428: I think the Hamilton decision was an all-in choice.

Heisey is an OK choice, I think. He had some good ABs on Sunday. Hot hand?

The squeeze play is a whole lot harder to execute than it is to imagine.

  11. Cards win. If we go 5 – 0 from here on out we need to Cards to go 1 – 4. Initiate project miracle.

  12. Beating a dead horse, but was Dusty loyal to Ludwick to a fault tonight? Maybe that is why the players love him and he really has not won the big one. Tell me the Reds are not celebrating.

  13. If we don’t win the division, we MUST host the Pirates at GABP. If that’s the case, I want Cueto to pitch vs Liriano.
