Maybe the Reds can turn back the clock tonight and play like the 1990 Reds.  Every time these two teams hook up, I can’t help think about the 1990 squad, even if I was just a young lad back then.

Hopefully Mat Latos will pitch like Jose Rijo and Jack Hannahan will play like Chris Sabo and hit 2 homeruns over at 3B tonight.  And maybe, just maybe, the Reds will GO!

The battle for the NL Wildcard begins in earnest tonight. The D’Backs play a game against the Rays where the pitching matchup favors the D’Backs. Let’s hope thhe Reds can start putting some distance (or at least not lose ground) against the D’Backs.

  2. wildwestLV

Ted Kremer is the batboy tonight.

    • dc937

@wildwestLV: And with Frazier not in the starting lineup, the Reds have a guaranteed PH HR whenever they choose to redeem it.

  3. Lefty Specialist

We had a day off to clear our minds. With another off day on Thursday Dusty can be aggressive with the bullpen ie: use Chapman. I’m feeling good about this series. My only concern is the state of the offense. Go redlegs!

  4. RedTitan19

Sure wish I could go get my bobblehead tonight

  5. Hunt4RedsOctober

Coco Crisp has really tailed off since we last saw the A’s.

  6. Y-City Jim

Mesoraco batting 6th tonight. Obviously someone has kidnapped Dusty and replaced him with an importer.

Importer? Maybe Dusty could retire and start an importing business.

    • Y-City Jim

@Y-City Jim: I’ll blame the auto spell. That’s it. It was the auto spell. 🙂

  7. George Culver

26 first inning pitches = bullpen work early. Let’s see if who gets in first.

  8. TraviXDM

Never mind, its Dusty. Bunting in the 1st inning.

    • Ih8Dusty

@tpteach: Do you ever see a Manager other than Dusty bunt in the first inning of a scoreless game? Hell no. He is the biggest idiot. Of course, this team is so fundamentally bankrupt we can’t even execute when he does call a bunt.

      • Y-City Jim

@Ih8Dusty: Bunting in the first is such a wonderful way to inspire your offense.

      • tpteach

@tpteach: I agree Hunt. Not sure what Frogs is looking for or why posting stats about the Reds bothers him so.

Nope. He’s the chosen manager for this tactic. I just don’t see the point of sacrificing the out at that moment (or most moments).

  9. Hunt4RedsOctober

Here come the blast at BP.

    • Y-City Jim

@Hunt4RedsOctober: BP’s tendency to roll over into double plays makes a strong argument for him to bat lead off.

  10. ToledoRedsFan

Pathetic Brandon. Just pathetic. Y’know, hacking at everything only works for so long.

  11. ToledoRedsFan

Runner on third, one out. Can’t even get one run in. Pathetic.

  12. Hunt4RedsOctober

Deja vu all over again. I’m not sure why I would expect to see anything different. But I keep hoping. Sigh.

    Fire Dusty. Promote Bryan.

–something I posted on every reds facebook status update today (It’s my last week at my current job–I don’t have a lot to do).

    • I Like Frogs

      Fire Dusty.Promote Bryan.

I’ve been saying this since last year, this needs to happen NOW!

      • ToledoRedsFan

@I Like Frogs: I feel like if I just say it enough on the internet, it will eventually catch on. Then again, I’m not currently dating Kate Upton despite saying so a lot online, so what do I know?

      • RedTitan19

I think it makes sense but it wouldnt help the offense unless they sign a decent batting coach. We already have Jenkins as an assistant pitching coach so if you promote Price you already have a pitching coach.

      • ToledoRedsFan

@RedTitan19: I agree but they’re two separate issues. I think Price will make smart gametime decisions. He would not, for example, have brought in ondrusek on Sunday in the sixth. So it’d be a step in the right direction. For me, the more immediate need is to get rid of dusty.

This is correct. Smart game time decisions with this team all year would have us more victories than we have now. With a good leader I think this team would perform better. We’re missing the Hunter Pence from last years Giants. We need someone like that badly.

  14. tpteach

This team is so not fun to watch anymore. Every game is just a painful deja vu of the game before. We’re told time and again that the stats are better than what our eyes are telling us (with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs) but I cannot believe that.

  15. ToddAlmighty

I know this is a little defeatist and pessimistic sounding, but I can’t watch this tonight. I saw Latos throw 26 pitches, and then a sac bunt in the first inning for a popup out, and a BP DP.

Not up for this. Hope they win, but I am going to go do something with my night that won’t upset me… like read a book.

  16. Sergeant2

FYI- The A’s @ Reds game is the free game on mlb.com t.v. Go Reds!

  17. ToledoRedsFan

Think about how awesome that Bruce homer would have been if he’d had runners on base….

  18. Sergeant2

A’s pitcher Straily’s last outing he went 4 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs in throwing 96 pitches. He has lost his last 3 starts.

  19. vegastypo

    Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce !!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. I Like Frogs

Come on guys, stay positive! This stuff happens to every team. I follow the Hanwha Eagles a ton here in Korea and I see this stuff happen all the time-inning ending double plays, failed sac bunts. It’s just part of the game. Or maybe it’s because they’re the worst team in the KBO…IDK.

  21. George Culver

I’ll never understand first pitch swinging in your first at bat of the night.

    • ToledoRedsFan

@George Culver: A lot of pitchers throw nothing but fastballs the first time through the lineup, and a lot of them throw them basically right over the middle on the first pitch. I’m not saying I agree with hacking away first pitch, but we’ve seen plenty of examples this season of it working too.

  22. Hunt4RedsOctober

Reds have only scored 2 runs NOT by a home run in the last 5 games.

  23. tpteach

At least the two pitchers pitch counts have evened out. Would love to see Latos toss some quick innings.

  24. laus Deo

    BRuuuuuuce!!!!

    I am late I know.. 😛

    laus Deo

  25. Sergeant2

The A’s pitcher threw 96 pitches in 4 2/3 inning in his last outing, and instead of seeing how his control is tonight, they’re swinging away.

  26. renbutler

I come to the board after the Reds stake their way to a one-run lead …

… and almost every comment is negative, some downright hateful.

I mean, there’s now somebody here called “Ih8Dusty.”

    Such class…

    • tpteach

@renbutler: It could be because you’re coming to the board after the Reds have lost 7 of their last 10 games followed by a first inning of Dusty giving away an out (which was an unproductive out at that). Perhaps those “hateful” comments have a deeper (more relevant) source that this game.

      • renbutler

@tpteach: None of those things are good excuses to be hateful, IMO.

This is baseball. It’s supposed to be fun. Once it stops being fun and starts causing hate, maybe it’s time to do something else.

I say that as somebody who used to take sports way too seriously.

    • Sergeant2

@renbutler: With the way the 1st inning went for the Reds, the fans got frustrated early.

      • renbutler

@Sergeant2: Frustration is okay. I get frustration. How one deals with frustration is the key.

      • tpteach

@Sergeant2: Frustration is okay. I get frustration. How one deals with frustration is the key.

Not sure how you see “hate” on this blog. You’re seeing frustration and venting. All allowed in the world of sports. Especially with Dusty managing your team. Worry less about the comments and more about the team.

      • renbutler

        @renbutler: There’s a guy named “Ih8Dusty.” And you’re not sure where I see “hate?”

      • RedTitan19

@Sergeant2: I am indeed. Like every game. Ive been a subscriber for eight years

      • Sergeant2

@RedTitan19: Only the second year for me, but I have only lived here a little over 4 yrs. Before that never lived anywhere but Cincinnati. Except for the time in the service of course. Go Reds!

      • RedTitan19

@Sergeant2: Im retiring in November and will be moving to Dayton. So this is my last year for subscribing.

Latos throwing a ton of pitches. Reds haven’t had a starter get through 6 innings in 5 games.

I try not to focus on the negatives. Every game is a new game. I try to stay positive. I can’t control the outcome of the game at all. I love my Redlegs very much, but I refuse to allow them to control my emotions, I juts enjoy the ride and see where the season takes me.

Trying to stay positive IS controlling your emotions. Who cares about any of it. If people want to vent, let them. You want Dusty gone, great. You (nor I) can control that. We just make the comments and enjoy life. No need to get worked up over it.

Yes, it is me controlling my emotions not letting something I can’t control controlling my emotions.

Yes. Yes I did. It’s all good.

      • Hunt4RedsOctober

@I Like Frogs: Not a negative stat, just a stat. What stat would you like? Choo and Votto are #1 and #2 in the NL in OBP. How about that?

      • I Like Frogs

        @Hunt4RedsOctober:

Calm down, I was just messing (maybe you missed the laughing face after the comment). I know not much is positive right now for the Reds. Just stay positive and have fun, it’s just a game 🙂

  29. RedTitan19

I was hoping they would mess up and start talking about the players by accident. I remember watching the games on satelite dish as a kid and during commercial breaks the announcers would speak freely about the players. The funniest was when they would bring Ted Power out of the bullpen. I cant remember the announcer’s name but he had a special kind of hate for Ted Power.

    • CP

@RedTitan19: With an exception or two, I no longer feel the players & Reds’ announcers actually know each other & get along.

  30. Hunt4RedsOctober

Reds lead MLB in sacrifice bunts. True.

  31. Bruuuuuce

What are the splits for Heisey against RHP vs. Robinson against RHP?

    • Y-City Jim

Ro@Bruuuuuce: Robinson much better. Heisey struggling pretty bad against RHP this year.

    • ToledoRedsFan

@renbutler: Bout time. Great news tho. I was starting to get really freaked out.

    • renbutler

@renbutler: And it was against Brandon Cumpton, who saw some time with the Pirates this season. Not just a run-of-the-mill minor league scrub.

    • Hunt4RedsOctober

@renbutler: Maybe he is starting to get his timing down? He is due back on Friday.

      • Kyle

@Hunt4RedsOctober: Yeah, he crushed one foul last night, was a line shot HR a bit to the left of the foul pole.

He also got hit in the wrist of the first pitch of the game. He screamed a four letter word and looked like he might be hurt. He obviously wasn’t, stayed in the game and had a couple of good swings (laced another line drive foul to LF).

  32. Redgoggles

It appears Robinson is hearing Ludwick’s footsteps.

  33. tpteach

Wow – it’s the first inning again! Same outcome?

  34. YorktownRed

Wow. That had to be one of the hardest hit singles, I’ve ever seen!

  35. Hunt4RedsOctober

Baseball is all about 2nd chances. BP gets a 2nd chance.

  36. Sergeant2

Looks like a good crowd at the old ball orchard tonight.

  37. Hunt4RedsOctober

Thou shalt be forgiven and redeemed!

  38. tpteach

I wonder why Dusty chose not to bunt in the 3rd inning after Choo walked…

  39. Hunt4RedsOctober

Reds just have a hard time stringing a bunch of hits together. That was one of the things that the Cardinals did so well.

    • ToledoRedsFan

@Hunt4RedsOctober: That offense is like water torture. Single. *drip* Walk. *drip* RBI Double. *drip* Single. *drip* Walk. *drip*

      MAKE IT STOP!!!!!

    • Y-City Jim

@Hunt4RedsOctober: Because Team Jacoby/Baker lack any clear plan of what to do offensively. Seat of your pants philosophy.

  40. YorktownRed

    Amazing catch!!!! BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Hunt4RedsOctober

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce! Nice running catch. I thought that ball was in the gap.

  42. RedTitan19

That has to be the easiest trivia question ever…

  43. CP

Votto hitting 538/.684/.846 over the last 5 games. Not bad…

    • Kyle

@CP: Not good enough, team only went 2-3. Votto is paid to hit 1.000/1.000/4.000 and never ever walk or let the Reds lose.

  44. Y-City Jim

I know the Pirates pitching has been outstanding but I cannot help but think they have been very “timely” offensively because their offensive stats stink.

  45. RedTitan19

How does a professional ballplayer not pay attention to where his teammate is lining up.

  46. tpteach

An opposing manager is only down by two but chooses to pinch hit for his pitcher in the 5th inning. Sometimes I wonder what an opposing manager could do at the helm of our team.

    • Hunt4RedsOctober

@tpteach: I think that is an oxymoron. He would no longer be the opposing manager.

  47. RedTitan19

Always when Latos is pitching!!!! wtf???

  48. Hunt4RedsOctober

Tough break. That ball took a wicked hop on Phillips.

  49. kywhi

If Latos can get his team out of this self-inflicted mess of a situation, maybe things really will turn around for the Reds. We can only hope.

  50. RedTitan19

Awfully familiar situation for Latos (game 5). Things dont go his way, a few bad calls, errors, and Kaboom!

  51. YorktownRed

Nice. Good job Mat!! Way to bail out Brandon.

  52. tgarretson82

Despite his tough 1st half, Hannahan is starting to grow on me. I think this PT is leading to his success.

    • renbutler

@tgarretson82: His numbers are quite good since early July, granted in limited playing time.

But I don’t mind his playing against righties a lot more at all.

  53. Y-City Jim

Botched plays like that miscast Dusty as some type of tactical genius.

  54. Hunt4RedsOctober

Dangerous count for Jerry Blevins; Joey Votto is a dead-red fastball hitter, with a 1.055 OPS against them this season and .940 against everything else.

  55. tgarretson82

Dusty has to be the worst manager when it comes to calling for steals.

  56. Hunt4RedsOctober

    * shaking head * Reds and their base running, sigh.

  57. ToledoRedsFan

What the hell was that? Did Robinson just decide to go when he felt like it, or did we have some kind of miscommunication?

    • NastyBoys3

@ToledoRedsFan: full count on votto. Him and choo have gotten on all 5 times tonight. No problem with sending our fastest runner there

      • RedTitan19

@NastyBoys3: yeah but he was looking back. With his speed he should have been able to take the base clean even on a botched hit and run.

      • NastyBoys3

@RedTitan19: the catcher vogt hasnt had a practice throw to the 2b yet. His first one wqs in the OF and his 2nd was 10ft short. Id put money on our fastest baserunner getting thrown out by him.

  58. Y-City Jim

Does anyone on this team have any understaninf of what it takes to steal a base?

  59. Sergeant2

Is there an aspect of fundamental baseball where its obvious the Reds are well coached at doing?

  60. RC

I’d settle for an understanding not to try.

    • Y-City Jim

@RC: Agreed. I have no problem with them not stealing bases. I wish they would stop talking like they are going to be some badass base stealing team then go out looking pathetic at doing it.

What does the base stealing instruction sound like? Take a lead and go?

It seems on the offensive end of things that their is no attention to detail. No studying of how pitchers approach hitters. No studying of how pitchers move toward the plate versus throwing over to the bag. Isn’t that what coaching is supposed to accomplish?

    • ToledoRedsFan

@RC: But if runners don’t try to steal they’re just clogging the bases and we absolutely can’t have that.

    • ToledoRedsFan

@RC: But if runners don’t try to steal they’re just clogging the bases and we absolutely can’t have that.

  61. NastyBoys3

At the game tonight. Id say about 37k. Much better game than friday and sundays shellacking. Go Reds!

  62. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Marty really talking up Jay’s play in RF and how is underrated for his D. Hmmmmmm. Come on Marty bashers give the guy a slap on the back.

  63. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Wonder what the Dodgers would take for Puig? Did this guy inspire the deadbeat Ds to all of a sudden become the best team in MLB? Where is our Puig?

  64. George Culver

Latos at 88 pitches (I’m not Dusty so) I would have someone getting loose in the pen. Just in case. And, his spot to hit comes up in ther next inning so he doesn’t hit again. If I was manager.

  65. Y-City Jim

Watching Price talking to Mesoraco. Seems to be a communicator. One of those guys you get smarter just by listening to them.

    • ToledoRedsFan

@Y-City Jim: And I don’t get the impression that the players walk away from talking to him shaking their heads, unlike Dusty.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Y-City Jim: Jim- I remember back in 2011 when I was ragging on Price beat-the-band and you said you thought the guy was pretty good. Glad you were right and I was wrong. Nice call.

      • Y-City Jim

@CharlotteNCRedsFan: There was no way to be sure. Like I said the other day, he has a vision of how he wants his staff to approach their craft. They all buy into it (still waiting for Ondrusek thou).

      • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Y-City Jim: I thought I was. Was ready to throw him overboard and couldn’t have been more wrong.

I am no danger to the Reds, as long as my fanny is firmly placed on this couch.

  66. ToledoRedsFan

Can I just observe: when he’s on, which is most of the time, Mat Latos is very good at baseball.

  67. RedTitan19

Who thinks Dusty leaves Latos in for another?

  68. George Culver

Unbelievable. Why let Latos hit. Another moment only Dusty can understand. And as I write this he gets a hit. Still the wrong move.

    • George Culver

@George Culver: I’ll bet his legs will be real fresh after running the bases. Odds are now he won’t retire a batter in the eighth.

    • RedTitan19

@George Culver: gotta try to get him that Shutout. Unless, of course, the lead stays at three. In which case Chapman’s save stat trumps shutout and Chapman will pitch the ninth.

    • YorktownRed

@George Culver: Perhaps Dusty forgot that Oakland has 3 hits? No hitter still intact in Dusty’s world.

    • George Culver

@RedTitan19: What does bullpen management have to do with hitting instruction?

      • Y-City Jim

@George Culver: If you mismanage it, as Dusty often does, the opposing team hits the hell out of the ball.

      • RedTitan19

@George Culver: Absolutely nothing. But he was in the process of rambling and lost track of what he was supposed to talk about. You can bet there are pearls of wisdom like, “swing early in the count. Guys strike out more when they get two strikes on them.”

  69. Y-City Jim

That 1990 was a group of some serious badasses.

  70. George Culver

Again, putting the player ahead of the team’s needs. I’m thing that this team needs to lock down a W rather than worrying about a personal shutout. Is Latos going to throw a CG of 130 pitches? He’s at 107 now.

  71. Hunt4RedsOctober

That should be it for Latos.

  72. Hunt4RedsOctober

There has been no mention of Teddy on the broadcast. Reds are unbeaten when Teddy is the bat boy. They should hire him full time.

  73. Sergeant2

And to think Latos is only going to get better. Latos is the future Ace of the Reds pitching staff, if he’s not already.

    • Y-City Jim

@Sergeant2: Once it all clicks for Mat, and it will, he is going to be flat out dominant.

  74. Y-City Jim

That is what I call effective relief work.

  75. RedTitan19

    Which Chapman shows up tonight?

  76. Y-City Jim

Apparently the chapter on bullpen management says to pull a reliever after he gets the opposing team out on three pitches.

  77. Sergeant2

34,640 showed up for tonight’s titanic struggle, 34,640.

  78. George Culver

Pirates win again on a walkoff homer in the bottom 9th.

    • Y-City Jim

@George Culver: Another timely Pirate hit. They are terrible with RISP but seem to always get a run when it is needed. You have to think a skid is in their future.

  79. Sergeant2

I think the Oakland batter wanted to relieve himself before he stepped in the batters box.

  80. msanmoore

Pitch FX had all 5 of those as strikes. Can’t believe he started with 3 sliders. Those were nasty!

  81. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Pirates are something. Gotta give it to them.

  82. topher9595

I wonder if Choo could maybe show a little more effort to preserve the shutout.

  83. I-71_Exile

You can’t stop Derek Norris, you can only hope to contain him.

  84. msanmoore

100MPH Gas … Thank you Teddy!!

    • Y-City Jim

@msanmoore: Was the crowd there for bubbleheads or because they knew it was a guaranteed win with Teddy in the house?

BTW, when is there going to be a Teddy bubblehead?

  85. Sergeant2

“And This One Belongs To The Reds” will always be music to my ears. Matt Latos to the rescue tonight. Good win for the Redlegs tonight, a two game sweep would be very, very nice. Lets get em again tomorrow. Go Reds! Adios Amigos.

  86. ToledoRedsFan

God I love Teddy. What an awesome dude.

  87. rewquiop

I just noticed in the box that Hoover has a better ERA than Chapman… I can’t help but wonder what the Reds could get or could have had for Aroldis..??? I’ll take him but wish we had a solid young left fielder or third baseman.

  88. Hunt4RedsOctober

1 game at a time, boys, 1 game at a time.
