BOMBS AWAY!!!!

The Reds hit some absolute bombs last night, especially those off the bat of Cozart, Frazier, and Bruce.  It was nice to see some big blasts and some outstanding pitching turned in last night by Leake, LeCure, Cingrani, and Chapman.  I think the Reds are setting up for a big series here with the Pirates.

Why do I say that?  Because tonight the Reds send Mat Latos to the mound to face Charlie Morton.  Mat Latos may never lose another start in his career while Mr. Morton is making only his 2nd start of the season.  The odds are in the Reds favor tonight.  It is time for the Reds to go, and GO they will!  Discuss the game here!

Morton is a ground ball pitcher…that plays nicely for him against a Reds team who in my opinion struggle against guys who can keep it low and in the zone…but then again, who doesn’t?

    • Mwv

@rfay00: Guys like Morton are the ones we feast on though when they don’t have good control and the ball gets up in the zone. A lot of our guys have lower wheelhouses, so you miss by a few inches and it’s going to get blasted. BP, Bruce, Frazier and to a lesser extent Cozart are all guys who punish pitches that are down but in the zone. There’s a chance Morton gives us fits but I think it’s far more likely that his control gets off a little and we take him right to the moon.

  2. Hank Aarons Teammate

One surprising thing, no one complained about only scoring on home runs yesterday.

  3. Mwv

Well. That is not the best way to start a game.

    • Hank Aarons Teammate

@Mwv: Yeah, can we petition to start the game over?

  4. CharlotteNCRedsFan

No way. How in the world did he not tag him out?

  5. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Don’t think he touched him. Looks like Zack was too off-balance to get the second shot.

  6. Josh

That will haunt, bad job by Coz, just block the bag with your glove.

  7. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Mat needs to get it together. Charlie Morton is not that bad.

  8. Hank Aarons Teammate

Need a good pitch here. How about a DP, or this could get a bit ugly.

  9. Hank Aarons Teammate

Latos doesn’t take too kindly to getting squeezed, does he?

  10. Hank Aarons Teammate

Yikes. Can we bring Cingrani in for this batter and then put Latos back in?

  11. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Good news is there is rain in the forecast.

  12. Hank Aarons Teammate

Dang, that was a mistake by Latos. Had a guy who K’s a lot 0-2 and tried to get that pitch up about 6-12 inches higher (and if he does he probably K’s him).

  13. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Heavy damage but not life threatening………..yet.

  14. al

What has it been with the umps in this series? Morton better get squeezed the same way, otherwise Dallas Latos might start getting jealous.

  15. Hank Aarons Teammate

On the plus side, this game could very easily be 5-0.

As it is, 32 pitches in the first ain’t ideal. To win we need some runs and we’ll need both Latos to get it together and the pen to pitch well. This can happen.

  16. Hank Aarons Teammate

I don’t believe in psychoanalysis but it’s clear Latos was pissed after the walk to Walker. Did that affect him, I don’t know, he threw two high quality pitches to Alvarez and then one bad one. I think it’s just was one of those things.

  17. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Reds & Pirates playing some old fashion hardball. Personally I like it as long as no one gets hurt.

  18. Mwv

If he doesn’t raise his leg there that drills him right in the knee.

  19. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Ready for the chorus, “Didn’t mean it”. Give me a break.

    • Hank Aarons Teammate

@CharlotteNCRedsFan: Did Don Drysdale hit guys and then say he didn’t mean to? I wonder. All the pitchers always say that today, but I somehow can’t see some of the old timers pussyfooting around it.

  20. al

Get Cozart the hell out of the #2 hole! My lord. What is it going to take!?

    • RedLegHerrm

@al: He’s hitting .355 in his last 7 games. Chill

      • al

@RedLegHerrm: 10 double plays. TEN. Sure thing, let’s all sit back, contemplate how bad that is, and just chill.

Good grief, citing a 7 game batting average? Puh-lease.

      • RedLegHerrm

@al: It’s such a tired and worn out argument. It’s not going to happen. Who are you going to put there? He’s not going to put XPaul there to have 3 lefties at the top and don’t even say Derrick Robinson’s the answer.

      • al

@RedLegHerrm: First off, who said I was arguing? It’s not like I sent Dusty a telegram, nor did I address anyone on this cit, least of all you.

Am I no longer allowed to express frustration about my favorite baseball team here?

Also, doesn’t it seem like you were the one arguing with me, since, you know, you made an argument for keeping him in the #2 spot?

        What’s your deal?

      • al

@RedLegHerrm: Also, to reply to YOUR argument, Robinson at the very least has the speed to stay out of all of those double plays.

    • Mwv

@al: I’ll just point back at the Cardinals series and shake my head.

  21. RedForever

When Morton comes up, if I’m Latos, I drill him right in the back. And then it is on.

  22. al

Cozart has now hit into 10 double plays already this year. He has cost us so much hitting behind Choo and in front of Votto.

    • Hank Aarons Teammate

@al: So he’s on track for what, 25 maybe?

The single season record is 36 by Jim Rice.

      • al

@Hank Aarons Teammate: Yeah, he’s probably not going to get to those lofty heights. But he is costing our leadoff hitter about 30 points in OBP.

  23. RedForever

This home plate umpire is terrible. The second pitch to marte was right down the middle and he called it a ball.

  24. JEFFMO

Double Play Cozart. He is cost us Runs….

  25. wildwestLV

1-2-3. Baseball is a funny game, isn’t it?

  26. wildwestLV

1-2-3. Baseball is a funny game, isn’t it? (cut & paste!)

It would be really cool if the Reds offense could pick Latos up tonight. Really neat.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@wildwestLV: Don’t think the Reds are going to hit 4 HRs off Old Charlie tonight. Probably going to have to put a rally or two together to beat him. Hacking away isn’t going to get it. Hopefully he has throw more than 10 pitches next inning.

  27. Eric the Red

The schedule makers love the Cardinals. They have 13(!) of their games with the Pirates from July 29 on, just in time for the Pirates fade. Thirteen!

  28. wildwestLV

Arroyo’s comments on Cingrani’s war face was great!

  29. Tennessee Red

Does TC have any chance of staying in the ‘pen once Marshall and Broxton return?

    • al

@Tennessee Red: You’re asking if the Cincinnati Reds would keep a hard-throwing, left-handed starting pitching prospect in the pen if he’s successful there, once other guys are back from injury? Hmmm, not sure on that one.

  30. Eric the Red

Going back to the first inning, how can they give Martin a hit? The ball beat him to first by a foot, at least. Big league players make that throw and scoop all the time.

  31. wildwestLV

Well, Latos has settled in. Time for the O to do the same. Little more patience at the plate, please.

  32. jas_428

Morton is Halladayish against Reds lately. Maybe someone said it already.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@jas_428: They killed him last year: 0-2, 7.20 with a WHIP of 1.60. Now in 2011, he owned us.

  33. al

This game could very easily be 0 – 0 right now. Latos is killing it.

  34. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Okay Mat, don’t go all wobbly on us.

  35. Mwv

That’s #8 and it could easily have been 10 or more if he got some of those calls.

  36. wildwestLV

Would love for Choo to go yard on Morton. Who here, in the Nation, can make that happen?

  37. nvilleredsfan

Wow, Reds are hitting right where they are tonight. Looks like it’s one of those nights.

  38. wildwestLV

Thank you, Joey. The thought of being no-no’ed by Morton makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

  39. Mwv

Now the question becomes.. who do have come out to cover the gap when Latos is pulled?

  40. RedForever

Pretty pathetic offensive performance…especially considering they just got shutout 2 days ago.

  41. Mwv

What a difference an inning can make. Latos just looks unhittable right now.

  42. nvilleredsfan

The good news: Wainwright got hammered in the first… Cubbies up on the Cards 4-0.

    • preach

The good news: Wainwright got hammered in the first… Cubbies up on the Cards 4-0.

Best news I heard today. Now, if the Stupid Cubs are obliged to beat the Cards, we should be obliged to beat the Buccos and make this a nice day.

  43. CP

I suggest Thom examine which hitters swing at the first pitch most often. I bet even he’d figure out why production is so low on the first pitch…

  44. Mwv

Hmmmm. Obviously not intentional there but still.

  45. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Now that was not intentional. Need to take advantage of the opportunity.

  46. al

3-run Johnson would be nice right here.

  47. preach

huh. Don’t know if I would pull Latos here. It’s a judgement call, but Parra is set to come in.

  48. D Ray White

Hannahan? Really? Let Latos hit if Hannahan is the choice. Terrible…

  49. wildwestLV

I’d take Latos hitting here, over Hannahan.

  50. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Parra up and throwing. He should never enter a game unless the score delta is greater than 5 or 6.

  51. D Ray White

In Jack’s defense, he’s hitting .286 in the PH role, but really, he doesn’t inspire confidence that this is going to work…

  52. D Ray White

And on comes Parra. Gasoline, meet fire.

  53. CP

But but but…the Reds and the Pirates have “protected” their players? Why are players still being hit?

Eventually the eye-for-an-eye stuff will work, right?

    🙄

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@CP: Reds will have to blink first. Part of the Pirate success, I believe, is due to the little guy (fighter) attitude.

  54. wildwestLV

Manny Parra? To quote Private Hudson from Aliens: “Game over man. GAME OVER!”

  55. D Ray White

In other news Arredondo pitched well in L’Ville. Opponents hitting .214 off him this year. Walks still a problem.

  56. preach

Hey, hitters are swinging slightly less than .400 against Parra. What more can you ask for?

  57. RedForever

The good news is the Cards are losing. The bad news is the Reds couldn’t get a run if they set the ball on a tee and all the fielders took a nap!

  58. D Ray White

    Parra actually looks…. decent tonight.

  59. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Dusty rolls the dice and it comes up a 7.

  60. YorktownRed

1-2-3 with Parra? Could we have been wrong about him?

    • Mwv

@YorktownRed: No. He’s awful. He’s less awful against lefties though and there were two of those in that inning.

  61. rfay00

Manny Parra is effective with a 4 run deficit and the bottomish part of the order up…

    Gotta love him!

  62. wildwestLV

The Good News: Parra pitched great.
The Bad News: Parra will probably come back out for the 7th now.

  63. Mwv

Choo almost tagged Morton with that one.. would have been ironic.

    • Jared Wynne

@CharlotteNCRedsFan: A DP would just be another time that Joey was up with no runners on, which is “good” because he’s not a “run producer”. Wait! Well, that was creative.

  64. CharlotteNCRedsFan

We have to accept that we have virtually no speed.

  65. CP

baserunners aren’t important when you’re down 3-0, right?

  66. preach

Never, ever try the hit and run with Cozart. With a real number 2 hitter, maybe. Cozart, no.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@preach: After Votto has his AB maybe but never ever before.

  67. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Dang – I hate when that happens.

  68. RedForever

Dusty, why are you running Choo, down 3 runs?
    Strike 2 on Dusty.
3 strikes and the Reds automatically lose.

  69. nvilleredsfan

I don’t get the hit and run or the steal attempt when you are down 3-0. Call me puzzled.

  70. wildwestLV

Billy Hamilton cannot make his way here fast enough.

  71. nvilleredsfan

Nice dbl by Votto against the lefty.

  72. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Love that Joey hit that but it makes the botched steal attempt that much more painful.

  73. Jared Wynne

And that is why it doesn’t matter if Joey and Bruce hit back to back.

  74. nvilleredsfan

BP is not right these days…

  75. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Come on Jay pick the club up. God knows we need it.

  76. D Ray White

BP channeling his inner Drew Stubbs…

  77. nvilleredsfan

Good news… Cards still getting beat, and shut out.

  78. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Well that was a disappointing inning.

  79. RedForever

The Pirates have not lost a game that they have led after the 7th inning. Reds will have to get 3 or 4 runs in the 7th or it is over.

  80. D Ray White

Parch looks like a red-headed Kenny Powers

  81. D Ray White

and pitches like bad Scott Williamson

  82. YorktownRed

Thom ragging on Mesoraco’s throwing. Bench could not have thrown that guy out.

    • AnnapolisHoosier

Thom ragging on Mesoraco’s throwing. Bench could not have thrown that guy out.

It was stolen on the pitcher, but Mesoroco has had a bunch of bad throws recently. Thom also blamed the pitcher.

  83. ToddAlmighty

Is anyone actually surprised that Partch is having trouble right now? This is what happens when you make a relief pitcher throw over 50 pitches in an outing. It’s not good for them. Now he went and walked two guys in a single inning.

  84. Redgoggles

At least we are saving our “good” relievers.

  85. Hank Aarons Teammate

This just appears to be one of those games…

    • nvilleredsfan

@Hank Aarons Teammate: I agree. From some of the weirdness of Latos in the first inning compared to the rest of his game to the fact that the Reds couldn’t miss the Pirates gloves. The Reds did have their chances but didn’t get the hits tonight. Cards are still losing.

    • Redstockings

Looks like the Reds will be shutout for the 2nd time in 4 games.

Yes but everything’s fine, right Dusty?
Brandon needs to sit out a few more days until he’s REALLY healthy or else move him down in the lineup. He can’t hit it out of the infield and he’s hitting cleanup.
We’ve won the last two games that Zach has hit 8th. Shutout the last two where he’s hit 2nd. Hmm?

  86. nvilleredsfan

Have the Reds won a game recently where they have gotten behind 3 or more runs early? I may be wrong but it doesn’t seem like this team has come back power this year.

  87. RedForever

Reds really do need to go out and get some bullpen help. This bullpen is just bad, except for Chapman, Cingrani and Simon.

  88. rfay00

The future closer now has an ERA under 5.00

      • steveschoen

@Richard Fitch: Correct. 0-5 with a 5+ ERA can only mean he’s the ace of the pen. In reality, Hoover is a rookie and even with good stats will obviously have some learning to do. My only concern is he is trying to learn with a manager who has little idea how to use his bullpen.

  89. RedForever

Reds get to try to get 4 runs off a guy who has given up 2 runs ALL YEAR! Good luck with that.

  90. Hank Aarons Teammate

It must be interesting, as a fan, to always think the Reds are going to lose games.

  91. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Need to buckle down tomorrow night. The Pirates are tough and scrappy. Saw a lot of posts at RLN today where I think people were taking them too lightly. Go get ’em tomorrow Reds!

    • Hank Aarons Teammate

@CharlotteNCRedsFan: You’re referring to me. I’d say I was pretty wrong about tonight’s game. I do think the Pirates are much improved, though, in general.

      • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Hank Aarons Teammate: No. You were not alone and it’s easy to do when we put a pasting on them last night. Reds need to focus like it’s playoff games the next two days. Pirates will not beat themselves.

  92. Hank Aarons Teammate

It can’t be that often that you get two guys on on wild strike 3’s, can it?

  93. Hank Aarons Teammate

New strategy: don’t be losing to the Pirates late in the game. If only the Reds had thought of that…

  94. 315redsfan

Didn’t get to tune in but clearly the team was flat tonight. Latos should be sent to Louisville!!!

  95. Hank Aarons Teammate

I don’t understand why the Reds need to go out and get bullpen help. I think the bullpen’s fine, it has pitched poorly, but you don’t need to go out and react to every little thing that occurs. This isn’t a situation like they have Jimmy Haynes in the rotation with an ERA of 6.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Hank Aarons Teammate: Great point. Just need to play smarter. Need to be ready to go at the beginning of the game. IMO, they came out flat and by the time they woke-up it was too late.

    • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Hank Aarons Teammate: Bullpen gave up 1 run in 4 innings with the back-end guys. Nothing to be ashamed of there. Hard to win when you score zero runs. Even the Nasty Boys couldn’t have helped that situation.

  96. wildwestLV

SP & bullpen didn’t lose this game tonight, the lineup did. Pathetic display. Any way you try to sell it. That’s all. Going to happen, happened tonight. We needed the offense to come through, and they absolutely C-H-O-K-E-D. Let’s hope they reset for tomorrow. I’d like to see a nice fastball, on the back, right between Martin’s numbers, first time up, btw. Just sayin’. Oh well. GO REDS!
