The Joey Votto Technicality Chad Dotson 06/12/2013 8 Every time I read something like this, I become even more thankful that Joey Votto is a Red. Everyone on this site blamed Spier for that baserunning gaffe the other day at third; but it is pretty obvious that Votto ignored Spier’s “hold sign” as he was rounding 2nd. Spier then not giving Votto the “slide sign” was basically a F you to Joey for ignoring him. It was like: Looks like you don’t need me son; how’s that working out for ya? I find it hard to believe that any coach would intentionally cause an out in that particular situation. I’ve never seen anything to suggest Votto is difficult to coach, it’s not at all unusual for a player to miss or ignore the occasional sign and I don’t think most teams would care unless it was a consistent thing that caused the team problems. Matt WI 06/12/2013 @zilla1126: Shame on Speier if that was the case. In most circles, people would call what Joey did a “hustle play”… and with proper assistance it likely would have worked out. Chris Garber 06/12/2013 Frankly, I don’t care if Votto is coachable. From results and interviews, it’s clear that he knows more about hitting — at least Joey Votto’s hitting than any coach. This. greenmtred 06/12/2013 I seem to remember, perhaps incorrectly, that Wade Boggs had at least one year in which he did not foul out at all.
