Game Thread: Reds at Cubs (2013.06.11)

Since the Reds own the Cubs in Chicago of late, I decided to drop the adjective describing the Cubs.  At least for one day.  Of course if Matt Garza decides to be a fool tonight, I may add a few more adjectives to describe the Cubs in tomorrow’s game thread.

This is the first time Matt Garza has faced the Reds since the controversy erupted the last time he faced the Reds when Johnny Cueto threw a pitch that was “slightly” high and inside to David DeJesus.  The end result was Dusty telling the two to strap on some gloves and fight it out.  Since then, Cueto has gone back on the DL, the Reds have continued to play good baseball, and the Cubs have been the Cubs.  Hopefully nothing happens tonight, but if it does, I hope the Reds answer with their bats and arms like Brandon Phillips and Homer Bailey did last night.

It’s game 2 of the Reds and Cubs.  Let’s hope the Reds Go, the fog stays away, and the good guys take home another victory.

  1. No better way to shut up a mouthy pitcher that to beat his brains out on the field.

  2. I can’t wait to see the reactions on this board when Dusty makes a truly atrocious decision in a crucial game (such as the playoffs).

    Wait…

      • @Truman48: I know. I was reacting to previous comments (Choo bunting, specifically). When I saw that, I immediately turned to my friend and told him the string of events that happened (bunt, GO, HR by Votto). He agreed it was insanity.

  3. And Musketeer Paul puts a little icing on the cake. Why is Garza still in the game? Oh never mind he just got taken out.

  4. How come Dusty Baker is wearing batting gloves? That would be like me sitting at home watching the game and wearing sweatbands and batting gloves. My wife is laughing on the floor right now!

  5. Lots of Dusty and bench love for XP. I feel Heisey’s hammy tightening up some more. XP is totally deserving of the love and playing time.

    • @jas_428:

I agree. XP has earned a spot. We all know Heisey will get his fair shake when he gets back, I just hope Dusty keeps him on a short leash if he doesn’t perform.

  6. I bet Dusty is wearing batting gloves just in case he gets in fistacuffs with Garza.

  7. I think Garza would feel much better had he just come out and plunked Choo in the back on the first pitch, and been ejected immediately. 9 earned runs.

  8. hard decision when Heisey comes back.. His biggest plus is that he plays some CF when Choo clearly could use a day off. Lutz probly goes down. Still dont see heisey playing anywhere close to every day

    • Joey just wanted to pad Cingrani’s strikeout numbers. He knew Rizzo would chase the curve in the dirt. Great play Joey.

  9. Yeah, Lutz has way more terrible at-bats than just about anyone on the team. Needs some more experience to get more selective with pitches. His swing/miss percent has to be sky high. Although I love his upside.

  10. This game is a wee bit more enjoyable then Sunday nights wouldn’t you say. We fans deserve this blowout. Go Reds!

  11. Cingrani can only pitch 10.2 more innings this year before he loses the ability to qualify as a rookie next year.

  12. If Bruce starts to go the other way as he has tonight, it’s a whole new season.

  13. How bout Jay Bruce going the other way again. Looks like Reds hitters liked the way the Cardinal hitters approached their at bats.

  14. If Bruce can continue getting hits to left field, this lineup gets a lot more dangerous. He becomes a .300 hitter, which means Brandon gets more pitches to hit, which means they can’t pitch around Votto.

  15. Its between Kelch and his consistent sleep inducing droning, and WGN’s ongoing 20 min. interview with Arsenio Hall. Both are equally painful to endure.

  16. I realize the score is 9-2, but how does Speier not send Hannahan on that? The Cubs weren’t even trying to get the ball back in for a play at the plate.

  17. The Reds will be in 2nd place in the division 3 1/2 behind the Cardinals and 1/2 a game in front of 3rd place Pittsburgh.

  18. Cubs pitchers now so embarrassed about giving up hits to Cozart that they are faking injuries rather than continue. A last ditch effort to salvage their career.

  19. I just realized… The HS kids getting drafted were in my class. I hope there were plenty of future HOFers drafted this year, especially by the Reds!

  20. Cubs pitchers have gotten killed tonight on pitches up in the strike zone. 1st Cozart now Izturis?

  21. Baseball is a weird game. Last night we score 6 runs, BP knocks them all in. Tonight we score 12 and he doesn’t knock in a single one of those.

  22. Replay shows that Todd Frazier’s homerun tonight was another 1 handed swing.

  23. Say what you want about Cozart, he has a good looking swing with lots of power, and plays great D. He still has the potential to be a great player.
