Game Thread: Rockies at Reds (2013.06.04)

The Reds look to start this series off in the same fashion they started the last one off… by hurling back-to-back shutouts.  That task will fall onto the shoulders of Homer Bailey tonight against the Rockies.  Bailey had his worst start of the season in his last outing against Cleveland, which means he is due for a superb, bounceback start tonight.

Discuss the game here, and as always, GO REDS!

  1. Well, Izturis made an incredible play there on that awful throw from Votto.

  2. Awesome job by Bailey today. He could have melted down and given up after that tough luck inning but instead he came back and pitched a strong game.

  3. Big double play there. Izturis catching that ball was huge. Nice to see him make a positive contribution for the Reds.

  4. Feels like a good time for suicide squeeze with Votto next and Cozart struggling

  5. Is that Sam Lecure warming up for the 8th inning in a 3-3 potentially 3-4 game?!

  6. LeCure is warming up.

Of course now with the lead he has to sit down so Big Brox can think inside the box.

    • @rfay00: I just saw that myself. I don’t want my team to win and have the season be tainted by that. :

    • @rfay00: I don’t care who gets slapped but I’m happy not to see a Reds player on that list. Cracking down on it isn’t bad for the game.

    • @rfay00: I mentioned this to my wife and the first thing she says is “Darn, too bad there aren’t any Cardinals on there”!

  7. See? SEE? See what happens when you put lefties back to back? Back to back strikeouts!!

    How could you doubt Dusty??

  8. And that’s the last time you’ll ever see Dusty put a lefty behind Votto. I’m sure he’s feeling rather pleased with himself, all vindicated and such.

  9. Is Dusty in the dugout? Sam LeCure in the 8th? I’m…stunned!

  10. I really hope Votto gets a day of rest tomorrow with STL coming into town this weekend. He looks tired.

  11. He’ll only feel vindicated if LeCure gives up a run. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. Good late inning decision by Dusty! I never thought I’d see the day!

Be careful what you wish for!

  12. Marty brought up an interesting aspect of the possible suspensions for some players. Will the clubs of those players void the contracts of the players involved. Some humongous contracts could get voided.

  13. Reds pen pitchers choke in the 8th inning when they’re trying to protect a lead… Brutal!!

  14. Any word on Marshall? This bullpen has been disappointing. Lecure has been great but this isn’t going to inspire a lot of confidence for taking that 8th inning role.

  15. The Reds are likely to lose this game, but the disaster is going to be huge. Dusty will now conclude Lecure can’t handle the 8th. I guarantee it.

I don’t understand the strategy of not throwing a strike (on purpose) to Gonzalez. Just stupid.

As an aside, the idea of bringing in Chapman to face the tying run in the form of a power hitting lefty still holds. Overall, though, right decision by Dusty to bring in Lecure, but we’ve seen the last of it.

  16. That’s the issue Kyle. You can’t walk Gonzales there… So, Baker uses LaCure and it still doesn’t work out. I liked the call and don’t think I would have brought Chapman on for Gonzales there. Let the 2nd guessing commence however because an argument certainly could have been made to have Chapman up for Gonzales.

    • @LWBlogger: We know he’s not doing Chapman. No second guessing on bringing in Lecure from me. But I’m very unhappy of what’s going to happen going forward—Dusty will say “told you so” in his postgame. I guarantee that too.

Lecure had control. Hanigan decided to walk Gonzalez. I don’t understand it. I really don’t. Just stupid.

  17. I’m afraid your probably right Hank Aarons Teammate. LaCure was the correct call there and it just didn’t work.

  18. And what’s the point of paying Broxton all that money to come in and pitch the eighth and he hasn’t pitched since he choked on Sunday and he’s not out there? What does the brilliant jockety psay about that?
