Dayn Perry of dug up this gem.  Yes, it’s Hall of Famer Johnny Bench on Hee Haw, singing covers of Jim Croce and Jerry Reed(!) to the delight of the Hee Haw Honeys.  Pay particular attention to Bench’s trousers, or as Perry calls them, “Aquaman pants.”

Bench must’ve been on the show more than once, because here he is (in maroon pants) with a glorious mustache, clowning around with Junior Samples.

  1. Dammit, Chris. I watched this when it first ran and you are reminding me just how old I am.

  2. I was just looking at a couple of these on youtube the other day. Not JB, but some of my “fight songs”, like “Where, oh Where Are You Tonight” and “Gloom, Despair, and Agony on Me”.

  3. Oh this is gold!

Thanks for posting this. I have some great memories of watching Hee Haw with my parents in the late 70s.

Bench has a pretty good singing voice. A little stiff maybe, but he sounded great.

  4. Greatest post in the history of Redleg Nation.

  5. I am just old enough to remember Hee Haw. My wife is not. She has now been educated.

    Man, that made me happy.

  6. HA! Johnny is the man.

  7. “Aquaman pants” needs to be a staple at RLN.

  8. Yeah, I remember him doing the “Where Are You Tonight” song. With Archie Campbell, I believe. Wonder if THAT is floating around somewhere, too. Man, that was awhile ago!!

  9. That. Was…. AWESOME!
    I never thought I would, but I miss Hee-Haw.

  10. Yep, I remember watching these. And yes, I remember my big sister swooning. J.B. was her fave, to be sure.

  11. Man, I forgot how slight JB was. Any date on these anywhere? I’m guessing was probably ’71 or ’72?

  12. These are great clips!

Bill, YouTube dates the first clip at 1972. I don’t see a date listed for the second one.
