Nine games remaining in the season, and tonight is the first of the final three regular season games at Great American Ballpark. Fortunately, there will be some home playoff games in a couple of weeks, so never fear.

Anyway, the Reds are still competing to be the number one seed in the National League’s playoff structure, so these games do carry some importance.

Discuss the game here. Go Redlegs.

  1. I bet all the Brewers fans that are packers fans are in a really bad mood.

  2. A question re. the playoff format: why couldn’t they have given the #1 and #2 seeds the option of having the home field advantage for the last three games, or only having home field for the first two? That way they could have kept the silly 2-3 format, but the better teams could have chosen to open at home if they wanted to. It’s more fair, but since Bud doesn’t care about that let me point out it would also generate a lot of discussion and debate as folks argued about whether to forego home field later in the series so their team could start at home.

  3. Win this series (and the next two, for that matter) for Dusty. GO REDS!

  4. That was some serious Cueto magic right there.

  5. If I am an owner of a team that was the No. 1 or 2 seed I would be pissed off.

    tonights lineup….

    Phillips
    Cozart
    Votto
    Frazier
    Bruce
    Heisey
    Stubbs
    Navarro
    Cueto

So…who is concerned about both Hanigan and Ludwick? Also if the game gets rained out what happens pitching wise?

  6. Phillips has been underwhelming as our leadoff man. Guess it goes with the territory.

    • Phillips has been underwhelming as our leadoff man.Guess it goes with the territory.

He’s been fine the few games he’s tried to be patient and go the other way. For some reason after a few games of that he went right back to swinging for the fences though.

    • Phillips has been underwhelming as our leadoff man.Guess it goes with the territory.

He has only been in the leadoff spot for a few weeks this year. I expect him to have much better numbers than Stubbs or Cozart. No need to panic yet, like you said it goes with the territory.

  7. Zach’s 30th BB of the year!!!

  8. This Fiers is going to be a pain in our side for years to come. Kid’s got good stuff.

  9. Frazier had a great AB, then that last swing. Yowza.

  10. @RedLegHerrm: What’s with the stache though? Is this guy in a Milwaukee Queen tribute band on his off days?

  11. Would you rather have Corey Hart or Todd Frazier?

  12. @wildwestLV: He borrowed John Axford’s.

    Nice pick from Cozart.

  13. @Andthis1belongs2theReds: Hart is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more expensive, but also 6’7″. Offseason basketball would be better with Hart, no question.

  14. Frazier seems to be struggling over the past month.

    • Frazier seems to be struggling over the past month.

Even the mighty Trout of LAA has struggled a bit this year…all rookies do at somepoint…

  15. @Eric the Red: a brilliant idea!

  16. Good AB by Heisey there.

  17. Heisey just busted out a funky swing to slow down for that pitch. Good for him.

  18. I wonder if anyone has been asked if Mes is expected to get any starts from here on out. Mes is starting 40% of the time for most of the season, and now nothing? All of the rookie callups, including Phipps has gotten starts. But no Mes?

I would attribute some of the lack of PT to the emergence of Navarro as a decent option at the plate. Speak of the devil! Nice single Dionner

  19. Stubby! Too bad he has three times as many SO as BB

  20. Daggone. Though we would get a run out of that.

  21. 3 hits

    0 runs

  22. NAVARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  23. Heisey read that as a hit all the way, almost beat Bruce home.

  24. Johnny is awesome on the mound. But he is so silly when he has to bat.

    • Johnny is awesome on the mound. But he is so silly when he has to bat.

I just hope Bud gets a clue and gets the DH in the NL soon, now with continual interleague play both leagues must have it.

  25. Rooting for Philly and AZ tonight…come on give us some help…

  26. This pitcher doesn’t seem too bad. But we sure are hitting him.

  27. Brandon hit that one too hard for a catcher to score 🙂

  28. Ruh-roh

  29. Heart just stopped.

  30. Pre – cautionary = pull Cueto now

  31. Juuuuust a little outside

  32. It looks like we are just missing pitches.

  33. Votto is 2nd in NL in walks. Unbelievable.

  34. The book is out on Frazier

  35. Heisey was hitting almost all the fastballs-inside for homers last year. Puzzling.

  36. Frazier has 12 hits in over 60 ABs in Sept. His average has dropped over ten points

    • Frazier has 12 hits in over 60 ABs in Sept. His average has dropped over ten points

That’s called being tired not the pitchers figuring you out. Have you been watching him play in September? His bat speed was way down for 3-4 weeks there when he was in literally every day for almost a month and a half filling in for guys.

“his bat speed was down for 3-4 weeks there when he was in leterally everyday for almost month and a half filling in for guys” what does this mean?
Frazier is a great talent, no doubt. But as a rookie, he got a pass for being unfamiliar to pitchers. I’m worried his OPS has been dropping since mid August. Maybe he is tired or maybe he is hitting the rookie wall. Either way he has been slumping for a month now

  37. @wildwestLV: You mean the Bible?????

  38. I’m just glad Fox Sports Ohio managed to get a signal out of Cincinnati tonight! 😀

  39. @Sergeant2: 😆 😆 😆

  40. Harpers down 5-1 right now, could pick up a game on the #1 seed tonight.

  41. @reagansdaddy: so far…….

  42. Great AB by Navarro, hung in there fouling off pitches.

  43. Navarro earned that base hit

  44. It means exactly what I said. It’s his first major league season and he got worn out playing every day non-stop with no breaks filling in for Votto and Rolen. At one point he was the only guy who had not had an off day for well over a month. Dusty road him hard when we needed him and on the backside of that he was tired and needed rest. He’s getting some now and hopefully that brings his bat speed back and we’ll see more classic Todd.

Have you seen any sign of opposing pitchers pitching him in a specific manner to get him out? I sure haven’t. That’s what your initial post implied and we all responded to. What does the book say on a guy who can hit the ball out of the yard without touching the bat?

I guess since you have all the info on his bat speed I’ll take your word for it. But he seems to be getting pitched more off speed stuff. All I know is that he hasn’t homered for a month.

@Andthis1belongs2theReds: I was at the game Saturday and Frazier crushed every ball he touched. Didn’t he get at least 1 hit on Sunday as well? Me thinks he is now rested and will be all right. Try not to panic.

  45. *rode

    Silly English language.

  46. Wait, that’s wrong.. first time was right? I’m too tired for grammar.

  47. Road him? No asphalt jokes, please.

  48. Marty said its beginning to rain, whats the weather situation in the Queen City.

  49. So good to have Cozart back out there, great hit.

  50. That’s the way to lead off an inning, with a threeble. (Isn’t this word fun night)

  51. Thank you Mr. Votto for getting that run right back.

  52. The headfirst slide is looking better. Kinda.

  53. I like watching Joey hit.

  54. Bruuuuuuuuce!

  55. Man, it’s good to see Votto more than single. I look at the next week and a half as an extended batting clinic. For EVERYONE in the lineup. Even SuperTodd.

  56. I like watching Bruuuce hit, too.

  57. Cueto got away with a Weeks HR there

  58. Frazier cold since late August, but Stubbs has been cold since late June. Would like both to get hot for playoffs.

  59. @Mwv: It’s rode, like a horse.

    • @Mwv: It’s rode, like a horse.

Speaking of “rode” and “horse” Its to bad Front Row Amy doesn’t travel with the Brewers.

      • Speaking of “rode” and “horse” Its to bad Front Row Amy doesn’t travel with the Brewers.

Oh man, that really made me laugh.

  60. After 6 complete its 4-1 Reds. Between Cueto and the bullpen, no reason that lead shouldn’t hold up.

  61. Wow! That ball was ham ham hammered. 4-2 Reds top 7th

  62. Jim Henderson.. time for Votto to act like Animal and bang one.

  63. 18,155 turned out for tonight’s titanic struggle, 18,155.

  64. Why am I hearing so much about how Arroyo will pitch at AT&T park? After today, it looks like the Reds and Nats are going to be tied. The Reds have to be the favorite to win the #1 seed now, given the schedules of both teams.

If they are the #1 seed, it could be great or terrible. If Medlen pitches the play-in game and Braves win, I like the Reds chances. If the Cards win that game, I really am not going to be a happy camper.

I’d just prefer the #2 seed, all things considered.

As fans we got to get out of this mentality, they need the #1 seed and they will win the first round no matter what. All other issues are intangibles that do not matter to winners and anyone would be nuts to say having the home field advantage in the NLCS is not important.

  65. I love Jim Day’s campaign to get the woo to end.

    • I love Jim Day’s campaign to get the woo to end.

Yes please, end the wooo. Too annoying. Embarassing on national TV, which all the playoffs will be on. If it was limited to the 8th and/or 9th innings that would be one thing. But those random wooos in the 3rd or 4th inning are nonsense. Wooo in the 8th inning and stand, cheer and clap loudly for Chapman in the 9th.

  66. Some really weak ABs tonight all around.

  67. Todd!!!!

  68. Reds win, Harpers losing in the 9th. Could be tied up for the #1 spot.

  69. Besides the win the best thing about this game is the way Cueto pitched. Cueto’s gonna be just fine. Lets get em again tomorrow. Go Reds! Adios Amigos.
