  1. This was a fun, exciting game, mirroring Bakerfield’s entire season. The Blaze had a good mix of power (HR by Lohman & Mattair) and small ball. After jumping out to a good, early lead, the Nuts got some key hits combined with some shoddy defense from the Blaze to come back and tie the game up at 4 by the 6th inning. The Blaze plated another run in the 7th on a walk by Joe Terry and a double by Theo Bowe. The game ended with the tying run standing on 3B for the Nuts when Dustin Garneau hit a screamer back to the pitcher, who snared the ball and held it aloft in a jubilant, winning display. The diminutive Bowe has had a marvelous season with the Blaze and looks to continue that performance through the playoffs.

  2. I like that Bowe bounced back this year after a down year in Dayton last year and a slow start there this year. I like it that he’s a small speed guy, who can play CF, and has some on base skills. He maintained his walk rate even while his average dipped badly in Dayton. I would like to see him increase his SB% from the 70% range the last two years to the 75% range. For instance, he was promptly picked off of 2B last night after knocking in the go ahead run in the 7th inning last night. Not good baseball in a playoff game. If he can continue getting on base at a .370 to .380 clip and improve his base running, he could be a plus for the Reds in a few years. Of course, he might have a hard time supplanting Billy Hamilton as the CF and leadoff hitter then though. 😉
