The Reds have made their first cuts of the spring. Sixteen were cut, and there were no surprises:

IF Kristopher Negron, IF Neftali Soto, RHP Josh Judy; IF Didi Gregorius, IF Henry Rodriguez, RHP Pedro Villarreal; IF/OF Donald Lutz and RHP Kyle Lotzkar were optioned.

C Tucker Barnhart, RHP Nick Christiani, RHP Daniel Corcino, C Brian Esposito, RHP Sean Gallagher, LHP Donnie Joseph, RHP Chad Reineke and RHP Brett Tomko were re-assigned to the minor league camp.

Lotta names there that will be on a major league roster soon.

  1. Can someone explain to me the difference between being “optioned” and “reassigned”?

  2. Optioned means they’re on the 40 man roster and so one of their three option years is being used.

Re-assigned means they have a minor league contract.

  3. Anyone else surprised to see Brett Tomko re-assigned this quickly?

  4. @Bill Lack: A little at first, but he’s 8th on the depth chart, is on a minor league deal, and he needs innings.

  5. Question. This says Nick Christiani was assigned to minor league camp on 3/18 but I do not see that on transactions page on reds site and Christiani pitched as recently as 4/1. I’m just wondering where you were able to obtain your information. I was hoping he’d make roster with the injuries to some middle relief guys but trading for Hoover and claiming the RHP from Baltimore seems to have squashed that. Not sure how a guy was pitching for Reds on 4/1 if he was assigned to minors 3/18.
    Sincerely,
    The Guy

  6. @theGuy13: that list of players was reported by John Fay (and others in the media) back when the cuts transpired.

I would speculate that you won’t find it on the team’s official transactions log because he was already signed to a minor league deal, and “assigning him to minor league camp” didn’t require an option or other transaction. The list of players who were optioned probably do appear in an official transaction log because they are on the 40-man roster.

As for minor leaguers still pitching for the Reds in Spring Training games…I don’t know all the rules, but I know at times minor league guys will still appear in a major league game after they’ve been assigned to the minor league camp.
