Let’s recap tonight’s titanic struggle….

FINAL
Cincinnati 3
Pittsburgh 4

W: J. Hanrahan (1-4)
L: B. Bray (5-3)
BOX SCORE

POSITIVES
–Good work by Aroldis Chapman and Sam LeCure out of the bullpen; three shutout innings.

–Brandon Phillips had two hits and a walk. Todd Frazier and Paul Janish, of all people, had two hits.

NEGATIVES
–With two on and no outs in the ninth, and the Reds down by one, Dusty Baker ordered Drew Stubbs to bunt. Even if it had worked, the Pirates would have walked Joey Votto.

Dusty Baker was intentionally trying to take the bat out of the hands of his best player with the game on the line. Moronic.

–Nick Masset continues to stink.

NOT-SO-RANDOM THOUGHTS
–Is this season over yet? Most frustrating Reds season in memory.

–We’ll have a post about it later, but Walt Jocketty and Dusty Baker are evidently returning next year. If that’s the case, I quit. I can’t take another year of this nonsense.

I’m not saying either of them deserve to be fired. I just can’t deal with more of the same.

  1. Jocketty is back through 2014. Is anyone surprised? He’s Castellini’s guy. I never understood why anyone thought he might be in any danger.

In terms of Baker, he’s apparently back for next year. It’s ridiculous that all of dysfunctional family Robinson is back.

  2. @Dave Lowenthal: Also, this just in: Edinson Volquez will open the Reds’ 2012 Season.

  3. Jocketty was with the TV guys for a couple of innings. Said it was likely there would be deals in the off season.

Highlights: The failure of the starting pitching led to the down fall of the team. The last straw was when they could no longer hang in was losing Cozart and Rolen almost simultaneously. He is satisfied with the job Dusty has done and is OK with how he has used the young guys in the last two months. The org thinks Cozart is the SS going into spring. He is impressed with what he has seen of Meso and Francisco in September. Alonso can hit and has done OK in left but they hope his off season work will make him better. With Stubbs and Bruce in the other two OF spots, they could probably afford to be a little weak defensively in LF.

  4. I wasn’t listening tonight but I’m glad I wasn’t. When Baker ordered the sacrifice bunt ahead of Votto I’d have probably driven the car off the road. That’s just unbelievably stupid.

  5. @OhioJim: I saw this (well, most of it) too. Coupled w/ the Enquirer quoting Walt that payroll will be increased, most likely, I take it to mean they’re keeping the team as is, albeit w/ the young additions he likes, and that they’ll (maybe) go after some starting pitching (Shields?) over the winter. Somebody (just a Reds fan, I mean) posted on MLB.com that Dusty will get another year, at least, b/c he got them into the playoffs. I agree (not w/ keeping DB, but that they’ll give him at least one more shot, b/c of this accomplishment) this is what they’re thinking (WJ & BC), regarding Dusty. Oh well. It is what it is. Yonder better play his @ss off in LF, the off season.

  6. @Steve Mancuso: I agree. However there was some real strangeness going on with both sides. The Bucs went right after Votto like he was the man they wanted to face anyway. Joey missed a pretty fat pitch for strike 2 and was really put out with himself then after fouling one off got totally fooled for a K.

The Bucs then proceeded to bait Bruce with 3 identical pitches up and away. On ball 3, the Reds runners advanced uncontested after which the Bucs made ball 4 intentional. The whole sequence surely seemed like Bruce was the guy Hanrahan did not want to face.

Outstanding AB by Frazier with him finally being HBP on the second 3-2 pitch to tie the game.

But then the gasoline gang wasted very little time in giving it back with an assist from Hiesey who played a single into a double but the way Ludwig’s hit was tagged I don’t think that really mattered much.

  8. @wildwestLV: What do you mean? One more year as in next year? I hope you don’t mean 2013. He’ll get 2012 not because of 2010 but because there’s a check in the mail with the name “Dusty Baker” on it for the amount of 3M, that is going to be cashed whether he’s in the dugout or not.

Also, saying “payroll will be increased” means nothing to me. I want to know the number. 81M? 82? 90? The devil is in the details. I don’t trust these guys.

  9. wildwest got it right, the check’s in the mail. WJ has proved nothing, DB lost all cred and the big man was absent all year, no wonder we stunk. Votto remains the lynchpin to this franchise, as he goes or stays determines Yonder, BP, Coco, the outfield, the ability to revamp bullpen and acquire starting pitching. I believe he will leave to play in Canada so make a legit offer (tear up contract new 5 yr. 85-90 million ) then if he declines I feel fans will understand, get two can’t miss prospects (pitchers)
Extend BP, deal for James, extend Coco ( right price ) free Heisey, and how about a Chapman for Stanton ( Marlins) trade if James is added?

  10. About last nite’s game. First, Edinson Volquez. Almost 100 pitches and 3 runs in 5 innings against the Pirates. That’s a bad start (not “so-so”), the same kind of bad start we’ve seen from him all season (when he’s been up).

And how does he not run to 3rd on a ground ball (one hopper that could not be caught in the air) with runners on first and second ? And Thom B. and whoever else was calling the game said that was good base running !
If the Pirates SS threw to 3rd for the easy force (as he should have), people would be yelling at Volquez for not running (as they should be).

Please trade him for a bag of crap, which is all you’ll get.

If you want to rename the goat, name it Edinson.

  11. Don’t look now, but Bray has had a poor 2nd half. Not surprising in that he’s now pitched in 77 games, far more than ever in his career. And in all those games, he’s only pitched 46+ innings.

After the game, Dusty criticized Masset for throwing a low strike to Ludwick on his walkoff, a low ball hitter. But that’s where Ramon wanted the ball ! And don’t Price and Dusty have something to do with how a hitter is pitched ?

Speaking of Dusty and coaches, I wonder how well the Reds would have done this season with Kirk Gibson as their manager and the DBacks coaching staff, in particular Don Baylor as hitting coach.
