An afternoon game today, as the Reds and Pirates each attempt to take this series. I suppose we’re lucky to have Mike Leake on the mound today. Leake has allowed only seven earned runs in five career starts against Pittsburgh, and no current Pirates players have homered off of him.

So you’re telling me there’s a chance?

Here’s your game thread. Go Redlegs.

    Fred Lewis starting again…..unbelievable.

      Fred Lewis starting again…..unbelievable.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, Dusty Baker is absolutely the worst manager possible for running a team that is out of contention and needing to find playing time for young players.

Just wait until the September call-ups when Ramon Hernandez keeps playing in place of Devin Mesoraco.

I’ve been disappointed with Dave Sappelt so far, and Yonder Alonso has been a mixed bag (good hit, poor field) but I’d rather see either one play instead of Fred Lewis. Nothing against Lewis, but he’s not in the Reds future, and he also played yesterday, didn’t he?

And that’s the problem. Neither one has impressed because neither one has gotten a serious run of playing time. It is all extreme small sample sizes. How can they succeed? Heisey is another example earlier in the year. Pick one and play them every day. Any hitting groove Alonso was in when he came up from Louisville is long gone now cause he has not been seeing live pitching. Every day, I get madder and madder that Baker is still allowed to cripple this organization.

It has gotten to the point where I think anything he does won’t surprise me, yet here we are.

Leake with the early gopher ball. Reds down 2-0 in the first already. Wasn’t it this kind of crap earlier in the year that burned out the bullpen?

  3. jholcomb

I just got home from my mom’s house…turn it on and see Lewis in left. Unbelievable. I have nothing left to say about Dusty Baker, he’s a complete mental midget and I’m ready to hold management accountable for continuing to do such dumbass things. Tell him to play the kids, or tell him GOODBYE.

  4. RedLeg75

Compounded by Baker’s LOOGY use of Bray, fear of using Chapman on a regular basis (early in the year, he was bad when used on 2+ days rest, did just fine on 1 or less days rest), those two things lead to everyone else being overworked because the starters couldn’t go 6.

SHOW HIM THE DOOR! (and go out with him, Walt)

  6. nvilleredsfan

Leave it to Leake to get the first Reds hit today and it took clear until the 3rd inning to get. Oh, and meanwhile the Reds decide to become a double play machine today. Looks like a long day today, fellas.

Let’s hope that’s a sign Mike has settled in. Bats need to wake up.

      We have bats? 😆

  8. wildwestLV

@Y-City Jim: Is it bad when you get excited to see your starting pitcher in the dugout, strapping on batting gloves? This is looking like a quick game.

  9. Y-City Jim

Fly balls dying in the damp air.

  10. nvilleredsfan

Man, Leake has settled in big time. It’s sad to think that he could lose this game on one bad pitch…

Way this season has gone. One mistake is a killer.

  11. Y-City Jim

Janish’s bat is a black hole but he does things so well defensively. Even on a routine play, he delivers the throw exactly at chest level over and over again.

  12. nvilleredsfan

Wow, Joey Votto is a professional hitter for sure… 3 run dinger.

  13. wildwestLV

Looks like Joey’s bat can cut through the “Monongahela Marine Layer”.

  14. RedLeg75

He got that one on the sweet spot, full extension. Looked like he was a bit in front of it, but hit it just right.

  15. LVW

I like the way the Reds players FINALLY decided to drive Fred Lewis home AS SOON as I released him from my fantasy team. 23 Hits 5 runs while on my team; 8 Hits 9 runs since.

  16. nvilleredsfan

Oh crap… and the trend continues of Reds pitchers giving the lead right back… this team is ridiculous…

  17. Crutch23

If anyone thought the Reds would get thru this inning unscathed, you havent been watching the 2011 Cincinnati Reds.

I’m late to the blog today, just wanted to give some of my thoughts:

Lewis in LF again? Dusty is bitter and is trying to send a message? That’s just plain weird… still don’t understand why Alonso was given a chance in LF again for only one day. Makes no sense.

I love Janish defensively… reminds me of Rolen with how often he has the perfect throw to 1st.

Glad to hear Leake pitching well, Joey Votto!!! Where would this team be without the NL MVP..?

  19. mike

sometimes you just get beat even if you executed
that HR by Jones of Leake was on a pitch well off the plate (a ball), low and inside.
Jones just golfed it for a HR despite it being a good pitch and not near the strikezone

  20. nvilleredsfan

@mike: I agree… just seems like the Reds have given up momentum all year.

  21. wildwestLV

Nice job by Mike though, coming back and holding it at +1. Back to work, offense.

  22. wildwestLV

It’s amazing Pittsburgh has gotten any complete games in this summer.

  23. nvilleredsfan

Good eye by Yonder. So now Dusty pulls him for Bailey as a pinch runner? Dust bag must think good at bats fall like rain from the sky.

  24. SirRibShack

@nvilleredsfan: Why wouldn’t you put someone on first that could score on a double? Especially when it would be the go ahead run.

  25. wildwestLV

Arredondo has his stuff today. Too bad we’ll never see him again in this game.

  26. RedLeg75

Votto has been hitting a lot more fly balls compared to earlier in the year. That’s good, as his power has increased w/ no ill effects to anything else.

  27. wildwestLV

I don’t think Bruce went around there. Somebody must want to wrap this up and go home.

  28. wildwestLV

Hey! Look at that. If you leave one of our relievers, who’s pitching well, in for more than one batter, they CAN perform. Nifty!

  29. LVW

Rare 9th inning run without Votto batting. Take Votto out of the equation and we have a .241 team avg in the 9th inning.

  30. Y-City Jim

I’m giving Dusty dibs for being a genius for today.

    • Y-City Jim

      Votto left ‘em loaded.

At least they gave him the shot at unloading them.

  31. Y-City Jim

    Slam the door, Coco!!!

Sappelt fell asleep on that one.

  32. Steve Mancuso

Nice win. Fantastic throw by Ramon Hernandez to get the first out in the ninth inning.

That’s not the first extra base other teams have taken off of Sappelt in LF. He needs to be much more aggressive out there.

  33. Dave Lowenthal

These extremely lucky saves Cordero gets simply serve to potentially hurt the Reds in 2012 and help them not all in 2011, unless finishing in 3rd is of considerable importance.

  34. Redsfanx

Wow! A series win in the Burg. Can we expect one in Miami? We’re getting close to being a .500 team. Hopefully CoCo finishes strong, although he loves those shaky 9th. innings, and we trade him instead of getting a couple draft picks. Then make Arredondo the closer.

    • OhioJim

@Redsfanx: It would be a nice trick to trade a free agent.

They could always roll over the option and then CoCo and cash for a couple of prospects 😀
