Minor League of the Day: You decide!  Let me know in the comments section who you felt had the best day.  Was it Francisco and his 3 hit, 5 RBI day?  Was it Maloney and his 7 shutout innings?  Was it Donald Lutz and his 4 hits?  Or what about Billy Hamilton, who despite only having 1 hit, reached base and scored 4 times and stole 2 more bases?

AAA
Louisville 12 – Toledo 1
Juan Francisco had a single, double, and a homerun which allowed him to score a run and drive in 5 RBI.  The homerun was his 14th of the season.  Mike Costanzo went 2-4 with a homerun, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored.  The homerun was Costanzo’s 4th.  Daniel Dorn had only one hit, but made it his 16th of the season which led to 3 RBI.  Chris Valaika and Kris Negron had 3 hits each.  Valaika went 3-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.  Negron went 3-6 with a run scored and a double.

Matt Maloney pitched 7 shutout innings, scattering 8 hits and walking 1 while striking out 3.  The win pushed Maloney’s record to 5-1 on the season.

AA
Chattanooga 15 – Carolina 14
Neftali Soto, Eric Campbell, and Josh Fellhauer had 3 hits each.  Soto and Fellhauer had 2 RBI and all 3 of these guys scored 2 runs.  Quintin Berry, Didi Gregorius, Henry Rodriguez, and Curtis Partch had 2 hits each.  In all honesty, there are too many things to mention about this game.  You are best suited to just check out the box score.  In short, Carolina scored all 14 runs in 2 innings.  The Mudcats held a 14-13 lead going to the 9th before Chattanooga scored twice in the 9th for the win.  There were 29 runs scored and 38 total hits in this game.

High A
Lake Elsinore 11 – Bakersfield 3
Carlos Mendez went 2-4 with 2 singles and an RBI.  Devin Lohman went 1-3 and hit his 2nd homerun of the season for the Blaze.

A
Dayton 10 – Lansing 9
Donald Lutz went 4-5 with a double and 3 RBI.  Kurtis Muller and Ronald Torreyes each had 2 hits and drove in 3 RBI.  Jefry Sierra went 3-5 with 3 singles.  Billy Hamilton went 1-3 but drew 3 walks, scored 4 runs, and stole 2 bases.  The 2 stolen bases give him 84 on the season.

Rookie
The game between Billings and Casper was postponed and will be played on Sunday as part of a double-header.

AZL Royals 5 – AZL Reds 1
Wagner Gomez went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.  Gabriel Rosa went 2-5 with 2 singles.

So with the run Francisco is on, why isn’t he up with the big team either in place of Frazier or platooning with Frazier at 3B?

We were told twice that Francisco would have been the call up had he been healthy when a 3B was needed but both times he was hurt. He is not hurt now; and in fact is red hot hot the plate. Aside from running into one about once a week, Frazier hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. So, what’s hurt by having them switch locations. The option on both is already blown for this year, why not get the full use of it???

I think Francisco will be called up once the Bats are done for the year in a few weeks. But I think Frazier is the right player to have up here. He’s a much better fielder, plays multiple positions, and his production at the plate will end up being about the same as Francisco.

I asked this on a previous DOTF: why doesn’t Didi Gregorius get any love when talking about the future? How does the orfganization view him? He seems to me to have all the tools to be a ML shortstop. Does anyone else have an opinion on him?

I will give the award to Francisco, but I think Valaika deserves a shout out as well. As great as Cairo has been for us this year, I would really like to see both Francisco and Valaika getting some playing time now to get a better sense of whether they can help next season.
