I hope so…and it appears that Todd Frazier will be joining the team in Philadelphia. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: I’m bumping this back to the top to facilitate discussion about all the potential roster moves we are likely to see today. Here’s what we know for sure:

–Todd Frazier and Matt Maloney have joined the team in Philadelphia.
–Daniel Ray Herrera has been claimed off waivers, presumably by Milwaukee.

That’s it. We’ll update as more information comes in.

Has to be a position player. If it was Volquez, he would be replaced with a lefty reliever, at least for this series.

  2. bho52

Maybe send Volquez down and make another move to add a pitcher before Friday?

I think you are right. Send down Volquez and then make another move when his turn comes around (Maloney, Willis or bring up a reliever and start LeCure). My bet is Willis. I would love to see Gomes released.

  3. bho52

Excited to finally see Frazier get a shot. Hopefully he makes the most of his opportunity

  4. royhobbs

Pretty sure I’ve seen tweets that have both Frazier and Maloney coming up today. Probably means Gomes out and LeCure to the rotation.

  5. Furniture City Red

    Frazier thru 44 games @ Louisville –

.293 / .366 / .579 11HR 12Dbl. 33RBI ….Strikes out twice as much as he walks (35SO v. 15BB), but overall would be a big improvement in LF if he can come close to those numbers with Cincy.

  6. CaptainTonyKW

Happy to see Frazier get the call but what is with the lack of reports on Alonso’s defense in LF? I know he is hitting well but has anyone reported on whether his defense is at least serviceable?

  7. Bill Lack

I think the thing with Frazier is his versatility. He can play the OF, 3B, 2B, 1B, and probably still play SS in a pinch. He’s been very, very good at Louisville since mid-season last year.

  8. Steve

Just can’t believe the Frazier move means something regarding a position player (Gomes, Renteria, Lewis?). That would really be surprising — unless Gomes goes on the DL for a mystery injury.

Most likely this is a temporary move to fill the Volquez spot until his turn comes up in the rotation, then call up Maloney. But it is surprising they would pass up the chance to bring up an extra relief pitcher.

    Very interesting.

  9. Sultan of Swaff

There’s no way you can carry Gomes on the roster with Frazier. DFA Johnny. It’s not fair to Frazier to put Gomes on the DL. If you give Gomes a two month tryout in left, Frazier should at least get a few weeks. The beauty of this scenario is that you still have two good players (Alonso, Sappelt) who could come in and succeed.
I think this means more of a straight platoon in left with Heisey and Lewis, with Frazier playing some in left and third. Although if it were me, I’d keep using Heisey as the 4th outfielder.
Overall, I just like the versatility this will bring. Prepare yourself for some stupid batting orders from Dusty!!

  10. Dave Lowenthal

Maybe Gomes will go on the DL with the complementary injury to what Mark Wohlers had as a Brave, an “inability to hit”.

  11. Kyle

Interesting. He has hit the ball really well the last month, as have almost all of the prospects in Louisville. Frazier adds value in two much needed positions.
@Sultan of Swaff: I agree with evereything but DFAing Gomes. He has been awful, but I think he adds some potential value against LHP.

  12. Dave Lowenthal

@Kyle: You’re right, but I still wouldn’t be shocked with DFA’ing of Gomes. It would be the last saga in the incompetence of Dusty Baker and Walt Jocketty, and their inability to properly sign and use personnel. Think about it. If Gomes is DFA’d, by all reports it is because he was given his “last shot”, which was to DH and bat second against right handed pitchers over two games. Just brilliant. Never once did they try platooning him versus lefties this year.

And now, it turns out, wow, the Reds need a starter. Where are we going to find a starter? Maybe we can trade for another team’s starter. Let’s go beat the bushes. Perhaps we can get Felix Hernandez or Josh Johnson. Wait—do we have a potential great starter in our own organization? Let’s send out a search party. Nope—no one here.

(Yes, I know Chapman can’t find the strike zone, but even if he could, he’d be wasted in relief.)

  13. Sultan of Swaff

@Kyle: So, you’re proposing carrying a guy on the roster who can only play left field (badly) and can only bat 30% of the time (when lefties pitch)?? That’s nonsensical, especially when you consider we have 3 guys at AAA with nearly even splits. Give his roster spot to someone who isn’t one dimensional.

  14. Sultan of Swaff

@Dave Lowenthal: At this point, just give me a solid #4 type starter. We have that in abundance in Leake, LeCure, and Maloney.

  15. Dave Lowenthal

@Sultan of Swaff: That’s a fair and very good point. The guys at AAA have even splits, but they are minor league splits. Gomes has a proven, long-term track record of a near .900 OPS versus lefties. That’s not chopped liver, even with his pathetic defense. Combined with, say, Heisey/Lewis putting up a .775 OPS against the righties you might get near Jay Bruce 2010 performance. Really. (Bruce was around .840 last year.) OK, probably somewhat lower, but the point is that right now they are getting near Jay Tibbs hitting out of their left fielders.

I’d need to really think about what they would expect to get out of the Frazier/Alonso/etc crowd, and what those guys provide in defense. And I admit, I’d like to get Gomes off of this team so that Dusty can’t even play him full time again.

  16. secondguessingfanbase

I’d start Frazier at SS immediately, Janish is just awful.

  17. Matt WI

@secondguessingfanbase: Janish is a lot less awful (offensively) if they don’t have a black hole in LF too. I’m not saying Jainish is set at SS for the next three years just because he plays really good defense, but at least he brings something to the table. I’d like them to work on LF first.

  18. secondguessingfanbase

    @Matt WI:

Understood, but if players like Gomes get non-stop criticism, how can we look the other way when Janish is just as automatic an out than Gomes? His offense is so bad that the team only marginally benefits from his defense.

    • royhobbs

There are alternatives to Gomes. There are no alternatives to Janish unless Cozart gets the call which won’t be the case with Renteria on the roster. Walt and Dusty love veterans with hardware.

  19. Matt WI

@secondguessingfanbase: It has a lot to do with expectation, don’t you agree? Corner Outfield = slugging first, defense second. SS = Defense with hitting as a plus. If management on the whole had better addressed concerns at LF and, to a lesser extent, Scott Rolen’s need for rest, Janish would be better absorbed. He sticks out more because of the other areas of weakness.

  20. jrob45601

If Dusty Baker was capable of constructing a decent lineup, none of this matters. If Gomes is in strict platoon, he could hit 5th against lefties, with Bruce 5th against righties. As long as Janish hits in front of the pitcher, he has pesky at bats, making the pitcher work more, and does a decent job of rolling the lineup over so that the pitcher doesnt lead off. Problem is, Dusty thinks Gomes should play every day, and somehow thought Janish should hit ahead of Votto for 2 weeks.

Bingo. I don’t hate Gomes. I just hate Gomes playing every day and especially batting second. Same with Janish. Love his defense and he’s a decent #8 hitter.

  21. jrob45601

Fay now reporting that Renteria left immediatly after the game yesterday, not wearing a suit which would have been required for the team flight. This would indicate that he will not travel to Philly, but pointed out that it could be something as simple as a family matter.

  22. Matt WI

Huh. Enough with the secrets already Walt. How can Frazier know he’s coming but the other move isn’t clarified yet. The cat is out of the bag, let’s hear it.

  23. CP

@Matt WI: It’s not a “secret” but a courtesy to the players. According to Fay, the Reds are waiting so they can inform all the players at once. Which apparently is around 4.

  24. I-71_Exile

Janish is fine in the 8 hole. I’ll admit, I don’t know what to do with Gomes. I know I leave the room whenever he comes up and expect a three-four pitch at bat ending in a K. It’s hard to imagine that he’s just suddenly lost it or that pitchers are approaching him much differently. I’ll be sad to see him go, though.

On the other hand, Volquez is basically dead to me after yesterday’s comments. It’s time for the Reds to tip their hats to the Ranger’s brass, admit that they won the Hamilton/Volquez gamble, and see what can be had on the trade market. LeCure is NOT the answer. He’s doing well as a long man, but as a starter he’ll be hit around it teams can prepare for him.

I’ve seen Frazier play at Louisville and he struck me as a solid player.

  25. Sultan of Swaff

@jrob45601: That wouldn’t seem to make sense unless the Reds gave Renteria a final ultimatum to play third and he refused.

  26. preach

Frazier was in Little League in 1998. Lawdy, Lawdy I am gettin’ old. Interesting to see how the roster is going to shape up.

  27. Travis G.

The Renteria tidbit is interesting, but if he’s going to miss more than a couple of days they’re going to need another SS. Frazier hasn’t played there since 2008 at High A, and I don’t recall ever hearing rave reviews about his defense.

The most likely scenario is having him take Volquez’s roster spot until his turn in the rotation, at which point Gomes would be designated for assignment. I really can’t imagine we’d lose him on waivers, and I suspect he’d accept the assignment.

  28. jrob45601

    @Sultan of Swaff:
Unless as Fay said, and its a personal matter for Renteria. Birth of a child, death of a family member, natural disaster. Players have left teams for a few days or a week for many reasons.

  29. Dave Lowenthal

Fay said Baker assured Gomes he was part of the plan. Good lord, Baker is just incorrigible. Fay said Lewis is one possibility, but I just can’t see that. He said Janish could be DL’d, but given that Renteria wasn’t dressed, it just seems like he’s probably gone.

  30. jrob45601

    @Travis G.:
I still dont see the Reds sending out a pitcher for a position player. I know they wouldnt need a starter for a few days, but this team has always taken an extra reliever in cases like this. Especially against the Phillies, and only having one lefty in the pen right now.

And as far as Gomes passing through waivers, there are some very smart GMs in the AL who know how to look at left/right platoon splits. A team like Oakland or Seattle could be looking for a power bat.

  31. preach

It would also seem a strange time to cut ties with Renteria just after the ankle issue of Janish. I think Fay thought ‘nothing of it’ in seeing Renteria not in a suit perhaps because it was nothing. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong. Is Cairo OK? He’s kinda been that super sub guy from the bench that seems a bit logical for Frazier to step into right now.

  32. CharlotteNCRedsFan

@preach: That’s good insight. Especially considering Rolen started all 3 games this weekend. But I can’t imagine if they were DLing someone, why wouldn’t they just announce it. My money is on Gomes or Renteria with Volquez a possibility and Cairo a long-shot.

  33. jrob45601

    @preach:
Speaking of Cairo, havent seen him in what seems like several days. I havent been able to watch or listen the entire games this past week though. Did I just miss him?

  34. Sultan of Swaff

@preach: There’s the rub. As good as Cairo has been playing, I’m not sure I’d want Frazier taking at-bats from Miguel. The Reds have to see it in a similar light. To me, that says Gomes or Renteria are gone.

    • Bill Lack

Good? His OPS+ is at 88, headed for his career average 77 (down from 106 in his career year last year). In May he’s .267/.421/.333 and in the last week he’s 1-6 with a walk.

  35. CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Sultan of Swaff: Unless Cairo is still hurting and can’t play the field. Then they could DL him but it does not make sense to not announce it.

Just heard Walt on MLB Radio this morning and they asked him about Volquez. He is hard to read but it sounded like Volquez may not have had his last opportunity yet but it is coming quickly. Maybe he is thinking that will wake him up. No mention of the Frazier call-up though.

  36. jrob45601

Thinking about the Renteria thing, it wouldnt make much sense to keep it quiet if it was a personal matter. Not like the guys wouldnt see him again. This does seem to point to someone being sent down/DFA’d.

  37. Big Ed

Renteria seems like a fish out of water here, and my guess is that he is the odd man out. I can’t see them giving up on Gomes just yet, but I hope I’m wrong.

  38. Kyle

@Dave Lowenthal: Honestly, that would be my favorite move. As I mentioned earlier, I think Gomes could still have some value if used properly. Also, for whatever its worth (I think its worth a little bit), he seems to be a great guy in the clubhouse who has done some good things with the Reds. I cringe like everyone else when he is batting right now, but if you can get his head straight, and use him in situations where he can have success (vs. LHP), he could help. Addressing the three guys in AAA comment, the Reds prospects are hitting the ball well in Louisville but that doesn’t necessarilly translate. We know Gomes can hit LHP at the MLB level, it is unclear if Frazier, Sappelt, and Dorn (or Francsico/Alonso if they were your third guy) can.

Going back to Renteria, he doesn’t add a lot. He is a worse fielder than Janish by a large margin, is not that much of an upgrade at the plate, and seems to refuse playing anywhere but SS. I’m not sure who we would have backup Janish if he is cut, but I’d be fine with giving Cozart a shot. There isn’t exactly a high bar for production to meet for him to be effective.

  39. Steve

    Speculating is fun, yes?

I just don’t see the move being for Renteria, although it makes the most sense, because Renteria is clearly the most useless player on the roster.

But the reason I don’t think they would ditch Renteria right now is because of the slump that Paul Janish has been in. If Frazier replaces Renteria, then there really isn’t a regular SS backup. Yes, both Cairo and Frazier could play SS in a pinch, but not as often as Baker would want.

That said, Renteria, who has been in a gigantic slump of his own, and doesn’t contribute much in the field, and can’t/refuses to play 3B, really is a luxury the team can’t afford.

  40. Dave Lowenthal

@jrob45601: I was complaining about Gomes to a friend of mine who’s an A’s fan and he immediately said, “He’d bat cleanup for the A’s”.

  41. Kyle

I think/hope Volquez gets sent down and believe it would be the best for him and the Reds. As frustrating as his comments were yesterday, they were a positive in that they make the whole situation more likely to come to a head. The Reds aren’t an organization that can afford to give up on someone with his potential (at least not yet), but they also can’t afford to keep running him out there. I hope they keep him in Louisville until he gets right.

  42. Steve

I’m going to stick with my original theory, that the Frazier move is a short-term response to sending Volquez down to AAA. The tipping point for me is the comment attributed to EV blaming the offense. I just don’t see that going over very well in the clubhouse.

Frazier plays backup (maybe even one game at 3B or LF) until Volquez’s spot in the rotation comes up. LeCure gets that start, Frazier gets sent down and another pitcher gets called up.

I agree this doesn’t sound like Dusty Baker’s preference – he’d like 10 bullpen pitchers if it were up to him – but I don’t think the Reds will bite the bullet on either Gomes or Renteria.

  43. musicjoker319

@CaptainTonyKW: Frazier can play more positions and play them all very well. Plus he’s hitting well. Alonso looked very good when I saw Louisville play two weeks ago. He’s hitting really well. No problem there. His defense wasn’t a joke at all. Not bad. But LF, 1B, DH are his only spots. And I don’t think the Reds need a LF or 1B. Maybe bring Alonso up for some other interleague games to DH. Hit him 2nd.

I just think the lineup is out of sync right now. No production of any kind out of SS. Dusty won’t even let these guys bunt the runners along with guys on 1st & 2nd with no outs! I can here him now saying we have slow runners on the base paths. But you would have Stubbs up at the plate with guys in scoring postion also.

  44. CharlotteNCRedsFan

Is there anyway that the delay in announcing is that there is a trade going down?

  45. musicjoker319

Should Valaika get a shot at SS? Or Cozart? Either one or neither? Valaika wouldn’t give you spectacular range but is a solid player who can hit. This would help the lineup out and get Phillips out of the cleanup position.

  46. Matt WI

@CP: I think it’s good they want to tell the other players, but I agree with the others who are suggesting it’s something more than your average DL move. I am certainly not able to know this for sure, but I’d be surprised if they hold a team meeting to discuss every DL and cup of coffee throughout the season. I think I fall in the “just a call up ahead of Volquez’s turn in the rotation” camp…

  47. Steve

If there really is a team meeting about the move, I’m betting it’s Gomes leaving.

  48. Sultan of Swaff

@Bill Lack: I’ll take the .421 OBP from a sub. If that’s not good for a backup, what is?

    • Bill Lack

@Bill Lack: I’ll take the .421 OBP from a sub.If that’s not good for a backup, what is?

      That’s only in May…

  49. CharlotteNCRedsFan

@Steve: You wouldn’t think they would hold it on account of Volquez, at this point.

  50. Steve

Fay’s most recent report implies they aren’t waiting for a team meeting, just want a chance to inform the player who is leaving. He also rules out Renteria or Janish as the player being sent out.

That pretty much leaves Gomes and Volquez.

With Gomes, since he is such a streaky player, they may figure the only way he gets hot again is by hitting, and that means AAA.

Maybe two moves – Gomes today, Volquez soon.

  51. Greg Dafler

When Frazier plays this week, it will be the first MLB debut from the Reds this year. Last year they had 2 new players debut in April and 2 in May.

It’s interesting following different folks on twitter. Seg Denison says that todays moves could involve 4 players. Also, Maloney is tweeting to LeCure about “seeing him soon.”

(complete speculations) Perhaps, then, Frazier is up for Renteria on a family emergency-type issue and they are waiting to notify Volquez of his demotion in coordination with the Maloney promotion – Maloney would pitch long out of the pen and LeCure gets Volquez’s start against the Braves.

  52. CharlotteNCRedsFan

    Gomes DFA 70% chance
    Renteria Released 10%
    Volquez DFA 10%
    Cairo DL 5%
    Trade 5%

  53. Steve

Two moves is possible. We only heard about the Frazier move because his agent blew it and tweeted about it.

LeCure deserves the chance to start again, but he’s also been pretty great in his bullpen role. He seems to thrive in it – in contrast to Mike Leake, who hadn’t seemed to connect with it.

Maloney is the next guy in the bullpen. That makes double sense with adding a LHP for the Phillies.

Now I’ve talked myself into believing there will be two moves. Gomes and Volquez.

  54. Steve

Sending Jordan Smith down also makes sense.

Smith and Volquez down, Frazier and Maloney up.

  55. Brown CPA

One thing I am thankful for at this point – Volquez was not signed to a long term contract!!!

  56. eric nyc

I don’t understand bringing Maloney up. LeCure is doing great in his bullpen role, so Maloney up would imply LeCure back into the rotation. Why would LeCure go back in the rotation instead of Leake. I’d rather leave the bullpen alone and bring Leake back to take Volquez’s spot.

  57. Steve

The Maloney call up makes sense because we are playing the Phillies who have a lot of left-handed hitters. Maloney for Smith is a move that would have made sense regardless of the other stuff going on.

  58. Greg Dafler

Plus, Leake has to be in the minors for 10 days, unless he is replacing someone going on the DL.

    • Bill Lack

@Steve: Personally, I’d like to see what Horst could do.

And they could make room (if need be) on the 40 by putting Valiquette on the 60 day.

  59. eric nyc

@Greg Dafler: I know Leake hasn’t exactly been tearing it up in Louisville, but I’d still rather have him in the rotation than LeCure. Although if Steve is right then it’s just a Maloney-for-Smith swap and Volquez is staying put. If Volquez goes you’d think it would have to be Leake or Willis replacing him in the rotation.

  60. dn4192

I am at the point of not caring for the near future. As long as Dusty is in charge and Walt refuses to or won’t stand up to him then this ship is just going to continue to sail without any real direction. For whatever reason and not sure whom is to blame (Dusty, Walt, Both) but the present construction of our Roster and how it is used makes me sick. There is one simple purpose and that is to win, and carrying players who can’t play, refuse to play and such is unacceptable. If I was Walt I do the following:

    1. DFA Gomes
    2. DFA Edgar
    3. Demote EV
    4. Demote J. Smith
    5. Recall Frazier
    6. Recall Leake
    7. Recall Chris V
    8. Remove Daniel H from 40 man roster
    9. Bring up J. Horst
    10. Instruct Dusty to stop hitting Janish 2nd

  61. CP

@CharlotteNCRedsFan: There is 0% chance Volquez is being DFA’d. He has options.

Lecure’s job as long reliever becomes far less valuable with Volquez in AAA. Maloney can easily serve either as a semi-LOOGY (I don’t remember him being that great getting out lefties but I could be mistaken) or long man.

  62. Sultan of Swaff

@Chad Dotson: I just can’t help but think Gome’s presence on the roster represents a failure on the part of the Reds brass—-A failure to address the LF hole in the offseason, a failure to properly use him when he did play, and a failure to recognize his limitations and cut him. Again, 30 teams passed on the guy. We’re not getting rid of Adam Dunn here, folks. More like Jon Nunnaly.

  63. CharlotteNCRedsFan

@CP: Used the wrong terminology: sent to AAA would be what I meant.

  64. CP

@Sultan of Swaff: The only section I agree with is that the Reds failed to properly use him. There really just wasn’t many viable options out there. There is a reason the Phillies, with an enormous budget, was stuck with Dominick Brown in their OF at the beginning of the season. (Though I do agree that the Reds should have taken the same route and given the job to either Heisey or a Frazier-type player OR did a straight platoon).

    • Chris Garber

There is a reason the Phillies, with an enormous budget, was stuck with Dominick Brown in their OF at the beginning of the season.

I’m not sure that is accurate. Domonic Brown was on the DL all year. And he’s also their top prospect, so they aren’t really “stuck” with him.

  65. Chris Wilson

John Fay tweeting now that Daniel Ray Herrera has been claimed off of waivers by someone…. More pieces to the puzzle.

  66. Steve

Fay says both Maloney and Frazier are in the lobby of the hotel, so at least two moves.

He also says Herrera was claimed off of waivers, which opens up a space on the 40 man roster. That could allow for a trade or someone else from the minors eventually being promoted.

Shaping up to be an interesting day.

  67. CP

Yeah…Matt Maloney tweeting about a smelly cab ride is starting to make more sense. 🙂

  68. jrob45601

    @Chris Wilson:
This will indicate that Willis is coming up. But he was skipped one start because of a minor injury, then left his next start after getting hit by a batted ball. Doesnt sound like a good time for him.

  69. jrob45601

Biggest surprise of the day: someone claimed Herrera??!!!!!!

  70. Chris Wilson

    @jrob45601:
Fay speculates in means either a trade or adding Reineke to 40-man.

I’d be surprised if they made these moves today in order to get Willis on 40-man. Why not wait until prior to the Volquez’s next start when Willis would go in to make these moves.

    I’m thinking trade….

  71. CP

Ugh…with the way Trevor Miller has recently performed in St. Louis, I could definitely see TLR bringing in Herrera to face Jay Bruce with the bases loaded.

  72. Dave Lowenthal

@eric nyc: You are making an assumption that a player doing well in a long relief role is not capable of doing well in, say, a 5th starter role. I suppose that is possible, but it’s not likely. You want your best pitchers in the rotation. If it’s the case that Lecure is one of the best 5 pitchers, he ought to be starting; in other words, that’s where you’d get your most value.

  73. Dave Lowenthal

Someone claimed Herrera. Remind me what we have left from the Hamilton deal? (No, I’m not upset about losing Herrera. It’s just kind of a reminder. And they just got rid of Buck, the last piece of the Dunn deal!)

  74. eric nyc

@Dave Lowenthal: I’m not assuming anything about LeCure. He was in a starting role and proved perfectly capable of being a #5 starter. I just think Leake is a BETTER option as the 5th starter and that’s why he went to Louisville to keep pitching every 5th day instead of into the bullpen. Really, as long as it’s not EV out there I’d be fine with just about anyone – Leake, LeCure, Willis, even Maloney.

  75. jrob45601

    Gomes/Bailey for Bautista???????

  76. Dave Lowenthal

@Dave Lowenthal: This whole 5th starter vs long relief thing reminds me of 1994 when the Astros had two pitchers that they had in the #5 slot and long relief, respectively. The guy in long relief was better, but they said, no, he was better suited there, and they didn’t want to mess things up.

Eventually, they couldn’t hold out any longer and they swapped them, and the Astros almost overtook the Reds before the strike because of it. That guy was Shane Reynolds. The other guy was Brian Williams.

    • Matt WI

Rumor is herrera was claimed by the Brewers

Wow. First Coffey and now Herrera. They like our second-hand relievers. I’m not sure they have a good idea about bullpen building up there sometimes.

  77. CP

@jrob45601: This is confirmed. The Blue Jays are perfectly willing to trade the current AL MVP leader for a good SP and a retread.

  78. jrob45601

    @Chris Wilson:
I would think it would be a backwards move. Volquez is a mess, would they really keep him and have to replace Bailey as well?

    @CP:
I see your sarcasm, and I didnt really believe it when I saw the tweet. It looks like a backwards move for both teams, in my opinion.

  80. eric nyc

Bautista? Wow…that would be huge. I’d hate to lose Bailey – I think he’s our ace – but Bautaista and Votto in the same lineup? With Bruce, Stubbs, and Phillips? Talk about contering Philly’s rotation…

  81. CP

No way. That deal would be a dream scenario. He would instantly solve the Reds OF and future 3B situation and only cost around 10 million a year. It ain’t happening. I like Bailey but that would be obtaining maximum value.

  82. eric nyc

Imagine the HR numbers Bautista could put up in GABP. It would be unreal. Slot him in at #4 and who cares who’s pitching…

  83. dn4192

IF the jays would take Bailey and Gomes for Bautista then I believe we would be seeing what would be a horrible move… how could we part with the clubhouse leader Gomes?

  84. Matt WI

Jose Bautista’s awesomeness is the front page story on si.com right now.

  85. SJ

Any reason Alonso, who is raking, is not being considered for LF? As far as Volquez, I think he will get at least one more start. They’ll want to be absolutely sure he can’t get himself straight before they pull the trigger on a move. He’s horrible, but I bet they keep him for now.

No one seems to be defending EV’s legendary “stuff” today.

  86. eric nyc

    Stubbs
    Phillips
    Votto
    Bautista
    Bruce
    Rolen
    Hernandez
    Frazier

    Drool………7 runs/game right there…

  87. SJ

I like bringing Maloney back. Remember he had a good start in Philly last year, when the Reds lost to Hallady and Hamels because they couldn’t score. (Insert “which time” joke here.)

  88. CP

Alex Anthopoulos already deserves executive of the year for not only signing Bautista to that amazing deal, but also somehow convincing the Angels to take on Vernon Wells’ contract. Any dreams of Bautista coming over for anything less than the Reds best propsects + Bailey + ??? is just silly talk.

  89. CP

That said, its nice thinking about Bautista being on deck while Votto is hitting. Makes me 🙂

  90. Travis G.

@eric nyc: D00d, that’s not happening. Fay replied to a tweet about that speculated deal that some guy sent to both him and Lance McAlister and added his own sarcastic comment on it (“Maybe they’ll throw in Drabek”).

  91. Furniture City Red

Well, Fraziers agent has created quite a commotion today hasn’t he…Speculation is running rampid…All the way to the point of Bautista becoming a Red!
…Bautista IS the Blue Jays offense…Pretty sure it would take more than Bailey/Gomes to get him. Hope I’m wrong.

  92. bho52

Janish in the lineup tonight. Gomes is not

  93. Matt WI

@bho52: And Janish in the two spot again. Sign. Clearly trading Dusty is not one of the expected transactions either.

  94. Chris Wilson

I think the Phillies have created this whole mess to take our focus off of the fact that we are facing Hamels tonight and that Chase Utley is returning to the lineup.

  95. Matt WI

    sorry… that should say “sigh.”

  96. Steve

Unbelievably, Baker still has the shortstop batting second, not Brandon Phillips or Fred Lewis.

I hope Janish gets it going as much as the next person, but that lineup formulation (with Renteria, Janish and Gomes batting second) has been such an abysmal failure, you would think even someone as galactically stubborn as Baker would realize it.

    Simply amazing.

  97. Dave Lowenthal

Good lord. Janish hitting 2nd. Lewis hitting 7th. If Gomes is on this team, he needs to be playing against a tough lefty like Hamels, not Lewis. If he’s not on this team, then fine.

  98. Steve

Isn’t Hamels pitching tonight? I’m pretty sure he still throws with his left hand.

Yet, we are starting our left-handed hitting outfielder instead of Chris Heisey (who also did OK batting second yesterday).

It’s almost like Baker is protesting something with this lineup.

  99. Steve

The lineup is probably based on a hit that Janish got against Hamels sometime.

  100. al

@Steve: the thing that always kills me is that baker has said numerous times that he stays up late thinking about different lineups.

how late can you stay up when you just do color-by-numbers style? how long does it take to figure out the exact same thing forever?

  101. Matt WI

@Steve: There you have it. Dusty’s lead pipe lock for the day.

  102. SJ

Chad Dotson once posted something on here about how Dusty would continue to use Gomes and complain that he doesn’t have anyone else when he stinks up the joint. That’s looking pretty fortuitous right here.

It’s also pretty sad that the most excitement during what feels like an 0-10 road trip is coming from the discussion of who’s coming up from Louisville to save the one of the top two offenses (statistically) in the NL.

I get tired of saying, “I’m not a Dusty hater, but…” Maybe that means I am.

  103. Steve

Heisey is 5 for 11, plus a BB and HBP in 13 AB against left handed pitchers this year.

    • B-town Fan

Heisey is 5 for 11, plus a BB and HBP in 13 AB against left handed pitchers this year.

Yes it just doesn’t make any sense that Heisey isn’t starting against Hammels. Someone on Fays blog mentioned that he loafed getting to the ball after Hernandez’s throwing error into the LF corner. Who even knows if thats true. Frazier not in there makes sense, might want a day to acclimate. Lewis instead of Heisey strait up doesn’t make sense.

  104. al

doesn’t it have to be gomes going out now? he had an off day yesterday and now they’re facing a lefty.

also, paul janish’s 44 ops+ has him as the 21st worst hitter in all of baseball. glad he gets an extra at bat and sets up the MVP the whole game.

  105. CP

@Steve: I wonder how much homework Dusty actually performs in looking at the quality of those 3 hits. I see one double and two singles…why do I have a feeling there was two infield singles and a bleeder down the right field line involved?

    • Steve

@CP: I wonder how much homework Dusty actually performs in looking at the quality of those 3 hits.I see one double and two singles…why do I have a feeling there was two infield singles and a bleeder down the right field line involved?

I’m sure the answer to that is ‘zero.’

We know he disregards how long ago the hits were, like in Renteria’s case. Despite the fact that Renteria is nowhere near the same player he was even three years ago.

Similarly, Janish – because of his slump – is nowhere near the player he was when he got those hits (one of which was in 2008).

Putting the added pressure on Janish of having him bat second is utterly ridiculous.

Heisey should be playing LF and batting second.

Maybe Joey Votto complained that he didn’t like it yesterday when the #2 hitter was actually, you know, ON BASE while he was trying to hit.

Well, except that Votto doubled with Heisey standing on second.

  106. JD

Been hearing rumors about Renteria leaving the team, something about personal reasons. I’m not buying it though, because Cozart would’ve been called up, right?

I’m hoping it’s Gomes being shipped out.

I don’t see them sending down Smith and Volquez and bringing up Maloney and Frazier. You need plenty of pitching for this giant stretch of games, no day off until next Thursday. I’d say send down Volquez, DFA Gomes. Let lecure or Maloney start Friday. But, now that I think of it, how does Danny’s removal come into effect? Willis going to be added? They’re making this hard for us, lol.

  107. Sultan of Swaff

Is Maloney lined up to pitch in Volquez’s spot? If not, it’s probably LeCure.

  108. dn4192

I would be happy if we Kept Gomes and got rid of Dusty…

  109. Randy

I am confused… We bring up Frazier only to start lewis against a tough left? How about we let the boy play tonight?

    • dn4192

What are you ‘MAD’, you don’t start no rookie against the likes of Philly pitchin…I mean he might see playin time when we are playing a lesser team but not now…

      😀

  110. dn4192

Wouldn’t it be refreshing if say Gomes saw the light? I mean if HE went to Dusty and said…

Dust, I just don’t have it right now against right handed pitchers. Why not just start me against LH and hit me like 7th or 8th and maybe I can get my grove back and will allow someone else to play in LF and hit against RH pitchers and maybe help us win?

    • mystubbstakingaleake

Wouldn’t it be refreshing if the Reds traded/cut/demoted Gomes instead of putting up with his terrible defense and his .171 / .122 in the month of May

  111. Brown CPA

That is an entirely too easy and obvious solution!!

  112. Steve

Lewis is 3 for 6 against Hamels. But only has one AB vs. a LHP this year before tonight.

  113. mystubbstakingaleake

    @mystubbstakingaleake:

Sorry, put my part in the quote:

But he did hit .268 against RH…

  114. TC

Things have reached a fever pitch. Information from the organization would be a good thing right about now.

Bite your tongue! The crazy talk is all that’s getting me through this neverending dull afternoon. The last thing I want are the facts – Viva Bautista!!

  115. Randy

    @dn4192:
I am a bit “mad” but I also don’t see sitting Lewis for Frazier as a game changer. If that is what makes us lose a game then we weren’t going to win in the first place. I am pretty sure we are bringing frazier up to play regularly, otherwise there is no reason to bring him up.

  116. al

@Randy: i thought the same thing. this whole situation is very confusing. janish second again, gomes out vs. a lefty, the new kid out vs. a lefty.

  117. pinson343

Wow, too many comments for me to read them right now.

I like what’s happened so far. Frazier is just who I was hoping they would call up.
And I believe Maloney will be put in the bullpen, with LeCure moved to 5th starter.

As for who’s going down, I believe it will be Volquez and Smith.

  118. Randy

Perhaps Willis will be pitching on Friday? Thus all the commotion with Herrera?

  119. Randy

And now willis isn’t pitching…. So who is taking DRH’s spot on the 40 man?

  120. mystubbstakingaleake

John Fay : “Volquez just called into Baker’s office. JSmith just came out.”

    • dn4192

John Fay : “Volquez just called into Baker’s office. JSmith just came out.”

You know Dusty will suger coat it and all, because EV is his boy. What EV needs right now is a wake up call. This is your career kid and while TJ surgery set you back a bit, you need to focus and understand you time in AAA is either going to pay HUGE for you down the road or you will just be another kid with a live arm who couldn’t or wouldn’t learn how to be a major league pitcher..

  121. BenL

@RC: HA! Agreed. I’m going to the game tonight, and a reality where I don’t get to see Bautista hit 10 homeruns for my Redlegs is not a reality I’m interested in being a part of 🙂

  122. SJ

@dn4192: Dusty’s too much of a kittens and sunshine guy for that. Piniella would have torn paint off the wall yelling at Volquez to learn to throw strikes and go after people, but no guarantee that would work with him either. The Rangers sent him down because of his brain, not his arm. Meanwhile the Reds dealt an OF who got his head right and just needed the at bats to be a star.

  123. Sultan of Swaff

@dn4192: Jesus, how bad does Gomes have to be before they dump him???

  124. I-71_Exile

I don’t have a problem with Dusty sugarcoating anything publicly. I’m sure his private conversations with EV are a little more frank.

  125. BenL

@I-71_Exile: Agreed. We don’t have any idea what Baker says behind closed doors, and frankly, that’s for the best. I wouldn’t want to work for a guy who went public every time I got something wrong.

  126. al

@Sultan of Swaff: if it’s volquez and smith today, i think there will be another move before what would have been volquez’s next start (hence the 40-man roster move with herrera).

for the next few days they will have lecure and maloney in the pen, so the number of relief pitchers stays the same, and we get an extra bat off the bench while renteria is away (for whatever reason).

but once lecure has to start, then we’ll need another arm for the pen to stay at the same number of relievers, which i think dusty will want to.

so when that happens, whoever frazier is actually replacing will be sent out. could be gomes, could be renteria, could be cairo i guess.

  127. CP

@Chris Garber: There is some validity in your point…Brown is similar to Bruce in that he was an elite prospect. But Bruce wasn’t even brought in to start opening day (for a much worse team). Brown was…he just got hurt before it could happen. Another issue is that Brown was starting in place of Werth and the other OF slot was basically some mix of Francisco, Mayberry, and Ibanez. The pool of available OFs was extremely thin this past offseason.

  128. eastcoast redsfan

How long does it take to say to someone … You suck. We are sending you down to get your act together. Throw strikes, stop blaming others, work hard and get mentally tough. Do that and you might be back up later. Don’t and you’ll be in the minors all year.

  129. al

fay says it’s official: volquez and smith. i think we’ll see another move in a few days.
