Only one spot on the roster is still up for grabs, because the pitching staff is now set. Says the Fayman over Twitter:

Bullpen is locked up: Burton, Chap, Cordero, Masset, Ondrusek, Bray, Maloney.

Sounds good to me. All capable relievers.

    Agreed. It’s a good pen.

    I still wish we were using Chapman as a SP at the beginning of the season. Two other LHP in the bullpen should be enough.

    I don’t want Chapman starting in the majors…if they’re going to start him, it should be at AAA. Right now, I’d take Maloney or LeCure over him as a starter.

    I have to agree with Bill. If chapman is to start I want him in Louisville with a strict pitch count to get his arm ready. I simply don’t trust Dusty with this one.

    In my mind, this was the optimal bullpen—best combination of guys who throw hard, lefties, and strike-throwers. My only concern is that a couple of these guys are slow starters.

    This is the bullpen I expected. No complaints from me.

    Speaking of pitchers, who’s the Carroll kid who “only” gave up 2 runs in his 4 inning start ? That’s better than we’ve been getting. He’s only pitched 9 innings this spring, but they were 9 good innings.

    And who’s Tabor ? Picks up a legit ST save today, tying run on base in the 8th.

    Did they DL Arrenodo or does he still have options? I kept reading conflicting accounts on whether he was option-able. I really hope they protected him. I still have to believe that the kid is going to be very good once again. TJ is still a strange animal for some people to recover from. Maybe he needs more conditioning or just more work.

      I’ve read the same things, John Fay told me that he is NOT on the Reds list as being out of options, but in his posts, John keeps talking about him starting the year on the DL, not being optioned, FWIW.

        I am pretty sure Fay has since confirmed that he is out of options and he predicts he will start the year on the DL.

    Carroll is Scott Carroll, 3rd round pick in ’07. Tabor is Lee Tabor, 30th round pick in ’06. Carroll was suspended for 50 games last year (I think it was last year), but has looked very good in ST from what I understand.

    I would have liked to see Chapman start the season in AAA with an eye on preparing him for next season’s rotation, too, but I can’t really complain about the short-term benefits of having his arm in this season’s bullpen.

    That’s a really solid group right there, and versatile. You can make a great case for them being the best in the National League.

    @Steve:

    Steve what do you see in Chapman as of now that makes you believe he could be a SP on the major league level at this point?

    @CaptainTonyKW:
    I’ve seen him talk about the DL, but nothing about him being out of options. Can you post a link? (Also, my wife and I were introduced by Capt. Tony (RIP).)

    @Bill Lack: I always thought that was the best bar in the world. That said, last time I was in KW (April ’08), it felt like a mausoleum in there.

    What happened to the idea of an 11-man bullpen?

    Burton left the game today with a problem with extending his right shoulder. It was a problem with that shoulder that shut him down late in 2008 and bothered him all thru 2009, wasn’t it ?
