Yeah, it’s only for ten days, but still…. The Fay reports:

Reds bringing in Larkin to work camp for 10 days. Supposed to arrive today.

We’ve been stumping for some time for the Reds to bring Larkin back into the fold (we even have a category devoted to it). Next step: hire Barry Larkin to manage this team.

Larkin as manager? I don’t get it. Is this some kind of running joke? What qualifications does Larkin have to warrant a big league manager position? The minors are full of former major league players who are now managing and coaching…working their way back to the Bigs. (Benzinger ang Griffey Sr. come to mind for the Reds) I loved Larkin the player – he is a Hall of Famer, but to just walk in a start managing? No way.

What exactly is he supposed to be doing? They’re playing games now, so how much “work camp” is going on?

He’ll put on the uniform and walk around and gladhand a few fans. After that, he’ll talk to the minor leaguers about what it takes to make it to the Show and maybe sit in the dugout during a game. Take some questions from the infielders. Pose for a few photos with the fans who flew in from Dayton.

Before you know it, camp will be over, he will have had some nice dinners and laughs with some old buddies and it’ll be time for the season to start.

      That’s it. Until next year.

while I don’t disagree with this in any way

what would the 3 veteran infielders have to ask Larkin?
Larkin is one of my favorite all-time Reds and I think deserving of the HOF but Rolen, Cabrera and Phillips have a combined 35 seasons and 4216 games….not sure they will have much to ask.
Now, if Larkin could work with Janish on his hitting that would be great
or Valaika and Frazier about playing the infield and hitting

        I’m still glad he’s back

I would love to see him working with the minor league infielders…Cozart, Valaika, Rojas, Hamilton, just to name a few.

I’d like to see Larkin as a coach on the team.

  4. RiverCity Redleg

I would immediately hire him as hitting coach. Can’t be worse than what we’ve got.

  5. RiverCity Redleg

FIRE Brook Jacoby and HIRE Barry Larkin… Our BA and OBP would immediately rise at just the news.

  6. Matt WI

@RiverCity Redleg: That’s awesome. Just like Wall St. “OBP is rallying today on news that Barry Larkin is town. In other news, fan confidence reports also saw a jump.”

  7. RiverCity Redleg

@Matt WI: Nice..”They are calling today Black Friday as fan confidence hits a 20 year low on the news that Baker and Jacoby have been retained for another 5 years. Ticket brokers were seen today jumping out of 10 story buildings as their business in Cincinnati has gone belly up.”

I would like to see Barry’s level of interaction increase with the club myself, but I’m not quite ready to ordain him a coach or manager. Putting star players in the dugout hasn’t always worked out the best for everyone. The question is: Can he coach?

  9. Matt WI

@RiverCity Redleg: Will GABP also be referred to as a “Bakerville” for the poor masses forced to watch baseball there?

Welcome home Barry. Hopefully we’ll be seeing you wearing that uniform every day next day.

Larkin talked a long time with Joey Votto on the field today, after hitting ground balls during batting practice. It’s really great seeing him back in a Reds uniform. It has to add a jolt of positive vibes throughout the team just to have him around. When he was talking to Votto on the field it made me think about the possibility that Votto might be the next Reds captain. I wrote a short blog post about that here:
