From Cincinnati.com:

Thom Brennaman tells me that he’s cutting back on his Saturday Fox TV commitments next year to become the Reds primary TV announcer. Brennaman will replace George Grande, who retired in October after 17 seasonswith the Reds. Thom will do about 100 Reds games for Fox Sports Ohio, as Grande did, plus a handful of radio games with his father, Marty.

“I’ll do some radio – five or 10 games – just to be able to do some with my dad,” says Brennaman

Wouldn’t surprise me if Jim Kelch takes Thom’s open slot.

Maybe Thom not working with his dad so much will be a good thing?

I would love to see Kelch bring some professionalism back into the Reds radio booth that has sorely lacking for several years.

I would love for Kelch to be on the radio with Marty full time. Those games were by far the most enjoyable games I have listened to in a long time. Marty’s negativity is not quite as bad when Kelch is up there. If it is Marty and Thom, I refuse to listen because it is double the negativity and just plain unpleasant to listen to.

Honestly, I prefer Thom to Marty at this point. Marty is way too crotchety.

As long as I can still hear about the Cowboy’s lunch and if he can really ride a horse or not I will be satisfied….

Per Fay: It’s Kelch on the radio.

From @ctrent: Kelch will be #Reds swing man, team announces

I think Y-City nailed it. Kelch is good for the listening and keeping Marty on top of his game.

I liked Kelch and Brantley the best of all. I really like Brantley the most, and I realize that opinion isn’t shared widely on this board, but so be it.

One thing I’ve noticed is that Marty and Thom are the ones to blame for Brantley going off on those crazy food and Mississippi and language tangents. Thom treats JB like he is some exotic creature. If they would just leave him to calling baseball, he’s at his best.

That’s why I like Kelch with Brantley.

I really, really can’t stand Marty with Thom, so if this arrangement reduces that pairing I’ll be glad. Basically, if Brantley is on the radio, I listen there, if he is on TV I listen there. If he has the day off, I sulk.

Kelch has been announcing the Bats games for years….I heard tonight on Louisville radio, too, that Kelch had been hired full time for the Reds, mainly for radio…and for some TV, too.

Steve nailed it — Brantley is the ONLY compelling reason to listen to Reds on Radio or TV. Thom is insufferable… “You know Dad…” I hate that FORCED familiarity THom… it THucks!!!

And JasonL is balls on accurate — Marty IS too crotchety.

    Give me JB anytime!

This is the best outcome, IMO. Kelch is awesome; I’m really looking forward to hearing him more often this year.

If only they’d get rid of Brantley. He’s just insufferable, and he’s gotten worse over time, if that’s possible. IMO, of course.

Steve is right: It’s like the Brennamen’s force that nonsense to come out of him.

I’m afraid I’m double-minded on Kelch. I live in Southern Indiana and have enjoyed Kelch for years doing the Bats games. I sure will miss him, but am glad for him that he got the “promotion” to the bigs. Nice to see good guys appreciated! I prefer Cowboy and Kelch as well. Good luck Jim, and congrats!

I’ve started disliking Brantley a little bit less, actually. When he’s not paired with one of the Brennamans (who are, quite frankly, a little creepy about him) he’s actually pretty good at breaking down pitchers and clearly explaining his observations. It’s just his schtick that’s irritating.

I liked Kelch a lot, and I’ll be glad to have almost anyone over Grande. The more I got to “know” that guy, the more his weird tics and quirks began to overshadow his game calls.

I understand that the announcers’ salary comes from a separate budget, but honestly, the Reds have put far too much money into this aspect of the product. I’d rather have a middle of the order bat or another starter as opposed to Thom, et al.

It took me a while to start liking the Cowboy. The first time I heard him I was somehow reminded a trucker I saw at a truck stop once who had no shame as he wiping his butt in a stall with no door. (Don’t ask, I don’t know.) I’ve gotten beyond that, and I really enjoy his very colorful commentary.

Jim is also one that is going to take me a while to like. He has very round vowels like he’s from New England or something. Anyway, when you get Marty and Thom together, it just gets way too negative. It is the only time I listen to the sound on Fox. IMO, separating them is a good deal.

BTW. English is my second language. At least when I reread my posts it feels that way.

I am completely amazed at the number of people that enjoy Brantley. I think he’s awful and couldn’t call play by play if a gun were to his head. When he’s on, I’d rather listen to static…

💡 It would be interesting to see a hands up or down:

    Marty: Up
Thom: Way Up (unless with Marty.)
    Jeff: Way Up
    Jim: Slightly Down
    Creeper: Up

Right there with ya, Bill. I’m tired of the “Cowboy” schtick. He’s from Alabama! He’s about as much of a cowboy as Marge Schott.

Actually, he’s from Mississippi. But, I do agree he’s over the top with his “redneck” schtick.

        Maybe it’s not a schtick?

In recent years, George and Chris have been the combination I’ve found myself liking the most.

I haven’t been a Brantley fan, and I think the Thom and Jeff on TV or radio has been a bad combination. When they aren’t talking about how many scoops of ice cream Jeff has eaten in the past 24 hours, or plans to eat in the next 24 hours, or would like to eat in any 24 hour period, or once contemplated eating in a 24 hour period, or whether we should measure by a period longer or shorter than 24 hours and what size is the scoop that we are measuring,

    What are we talking about?

I hope that Thom on TV means a lot of Thom and Chris. I liked that combination. They don’t think exactly the same. Chris doesn’t just agree with everything Thom says, which helps both of them. Thom is less negative (I’m not asking him to be less critical) with Chris in the booth and I think each of their strong points both shine when they work together.

  21. shane

Thom is always the one to start that crap about ice cream or fried chicken, then goes on forever with it, letting the game just slip away
    he gets on my nerves

I’m curious as to how Kelch and Welsh gell….those are the guys I like.

Wow! Smack dab in the middle of Hot Stove season and this is the what the Reds give us? Shuffling around the overpaid obnoxious announcers. Will that get us to .500 and end the nine years of losing? They sure know what it takes to put butts in the seats. 🙂 Wake me up if they send anyone to Indy for the winter meetings.

🙄 Amen. Ditto. Right on. etc…

  24. Redsfanx

I like Brantley; he’s knowledgeable and many good baseball announcers have had a southern twang including Red Barber and Mel Allen. It’s good to break up the Brennaman’s. That ‘Dad’ business during the game gets tiring. Good move to put Jim Kelch with Marty.

  25. JerBear

I don’t mind Kelch, but why not Dan Hoard? I think the Reds missed again on the radio broadcasting hire, kind of like in the Steve Stewart deal. I guess it’s nice they rewarded a guy whose been in the organization, but I think Hoard is a better all around announcer.

  26. catcard202

    @JerBear:

Kelch is a quality radio gamecaster…Listen to about 3inn and you’ll understand what I mean. I have always enjoyed his Bats games…As he relays the game in a way that informs & creates a mental visual.

IMO, Reds Radio just got much better..

  27. RiverCity Redleg

Welsh is by far the best one and I really like he and Thom together. Kelch will be great with Marty. Should keep him in check a bit, having a true “professional” in the booth with him. I could take or leave Cowboy. I guess he’s fine as a fill in.
