I thought I’d post the latest transactions, just for the record. Evidently, the Reds told Matt Maloney they were going to demote him because they wanted to bring up a position player. Of course, it would have been nice if they’d brought up a position player who could actually play, but they didn’t.

Today the Reds optioned to Class AAA Louisville LHP Matt Maloney; recalled from Louisville utility player Wilkin Castillo (#26); placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to yesterday, SS Alex Gonzalez (loose bodies, right elbow); transfered to the 60-day disabled list 3B Edwin Encarnacion (broken left wrist); selected from Louisville the contract of IF Danny Richar (#9).

For what it’s worth, I expect the Reds to call up Homer Bailey for Saturday’s game against Cleveland.

Drew Sutton seems to be doing pretty well at AAA but I never hear his name included in any list of possible call ups. What’s up with that?

I agree, I would like to see Sutton get a shot soon especially with how poor Rosales has been playing lately.

Also, explain to me how Gonzalez gets hurt and Janish still doesn’t get playing time, wasn’t there a reason he made the team out of spring training and Rosales didn’t. Even if you want to play Hairston can’t you play Hairston at 3b and Janish at SS, I mean Rosales hasn’t looked good at the plate in a long time.

Castillo was one of the few guys that came through in the clutch yesterday. He has actually done better in his limited time in the major than in AAA.

Now Chad, I would say guys like you and I can’t actually play, a guy like Castillo, who can play multiple positions in the major leagues, can actually play.

I expect Bailey to get the call too, but that’s not taking anything from Matt Maloney. He was good in his 1st start, OK in his 2nd start, and definitely ran into some bad luck his 3rd start. He’ll be back, sooner or later.

And yes Kurt, Castillo can play multiple positions, but how well? And can he hit? At the time of his call-up he was hitting .221 with a .238 OBP at AAA.

At least we won’t have to worry about him clogging the bases.

I’m sure Castillo was brought up to give Hanigan a break at some point, but I can’t help but wonder, is there not a single ML ready catcher in the Reds entire farm system?

In the past, I think Sutton has been on the DL when the Reds needed an infielder. This time he wasn’t, and I’m not sure why they added to the 40-man roster crunch by adding Richar. I doubt they added him just to turn around and risk losing him in a week or two when Edwin comes of the DL.

Who goes through waivers? Tatum? Bray?

I thought he could, too, but in one of the asst GM chat’s on the Reds official website, he said that for Bray to be on the 60-day DL he’d have to be added to the major league roster, then placed on the 60-day, and he’d accumulate major league service time.
