Any chance that Adam Dunn will stay in Cincinnati past his current contract is being destroyed by these Cincinnati media guys, who continue to say stupid things. First, there was the flap over the Brennamans, now Bill Cunningham at WLW is saying stupid things:

Reds outfielder Adam Dunn said Tuesday that recent remarks by WLW’s Bill Cunningham suggesting Dunn played while drunk crossed the line.

Last Friday, following the Reds’ victory over Pittsburgh, Cunningham singled out Dunn and outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. for what he called a lack of hustle.

In the game, a base-running error by Dunn cost the Reds two runs in the fourth inning. And Griffey was criticized by Reds announcer Thom Brennaman for not making it to second base after a bloop single dropped between three Pirates.

The next day, Cunningham said Griffey should never wear a Reds uniform again, and said Dunn was drunk during the game.

“Adam Dunn looks like a monkey with a football in left field,” Cunningham said. “He has to have consequences for what he does. That is again a loafing ballplayer who … would have blew a .15 if someone gave (him) the intoxilizer last night. I say .15. The son of a gun is drunk. And he’s playing baseball in left field for the Redlegs.”

Unbelievable. I can’t believe how this town loves players with no talent (see Hopper, Norris and Freel, Ryan), yet bashes its best players incessantly. As Daedalus points out, it doesn’t have to be like that.

Cunningham is trying to say something controversial so someone will listen to his lame program. He’s just like Booger and The Monkey on The Morning Zoo at any random FM station anywhere in the country: irrelevant and ill-informed. I can’t believe I just wasted five minutes writing a post on him. Maybe I’m a moron, too.

Hey, WLW, my resume is on its way. I’ll take your drive-time slot.

Couldn’t agree more. Dunn should sue him for defamation.

Also interesting that Lance McAlister, who will comment on anything, has nothing on his blog about the Dunn/Cunningham story. Could it be b/c he works p/t for WLW, where Cunningham is a big wheel?

Bill Cunningham is an obnoxious radio personality…who cares what comes out of his mouth. I’m tired of Reds fans complaining about the criticism from Marty, Thom, and Jeff and now Willie. If you read the Enquirer article Cunningham says he was calling out his lack of hustle by making a softball reference since a lot of men drink beer when they play softball. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. If Cunningham called him an alcoholic loser or a drug addict or a scumbag or anything crazy like that then I would absolutely be upset with him. He didn’t call him names, he sarcastically said he was playing drunk.

I want Adam Dunn on the Reds. But, if he wants to leave town because an annoying radio personality makes some comments about him then i’m not going to stop him. Everyone needs to get over this one.

Oh good, just what we need — another national right wing radio personality. You can never have enough of those.

I didn’t realize anyone took anything Cunningham said seriously, especially when it comes to sports.

And if these comments were made with Seg during his “stooge report”, then this definitely is a non-story because that bit/segment is never serious about anything.

Dunn should sue. There are people out there stupid enough to believe this stuff. Just like those e-mails from Nigeria.

    Apparently, the jackass apologized:

Apology to Dunn: Local talk radio personality Bill Cunningham was in the Reds clubhouse to apologize to Dunn for comments he said on the air last week. Dunn had cost the Reds a hit and two runs Thursday at Pittsburgh when he forgot to touch third base while trying to score.

“That is a loafing ballplayer who probably would have blew a .15,” Cunningham said during an Aug. 31 broadcast. “If someone gave him the Intoxilizer last night, I’d say .15. The son of a gun is drunk and he’s playing baseball in left field for the Redlegs.”

Dunn took offense to the comment, especially when they were relayed by a friend to his mother in Texas.

“My year wouldn’t be complete without something like that,” said Dunn, who has been a target of talk radio ire over the years. “This was a great way to start the morning.”

I really feel bad for Dunn. Remember when it seemed he was always laughing and smiling and enjoying being a baseball player? He never smiles any more.

When is this hate-filled talk radio going to go out of fashion. And what does it say about America that it is so popular?

  8. Endymion

You people are sensitive nancy boys! Cunningham is a talking head. -1 point for taking what he said seriously. – 10 points for listening to him in the first place.

    Also, Dunn sucks.

  9. Philip

Adam Dunn is the best home run hitter on the reds. So does that mean he’s the best player on the reds?

Don’t you just love how weinies who wish they could play the game are such critics of those who can? Hitting a pitched ball is one of the hardest things to do in pro sports. Running your mouth is one of the easiest. Cunningham should author his own book “I never played the game, volume 2”. Dedicate it to Cosell. From one expert to another.

  11. Daedalus

    Also, Endymion sucks.

Does Ryan Howard suck, too? Because they have identical numbers this season. Who are you? Bill Notcunningham?

I was actually listening to this show when it aired. I agreed with a lot of what he said about Griffey, especially with him hot-dogging with his warning track shots recently.

As far as his comments on Dunn, he was much more malicious than a tongue-in-cheek softball remark. I was in my car and squirming in my seat in discomfort at his remarks. He was completely out of line.

Also, thanks for the comment at #12, Daedalus. I got into an arguement this past weekend with a Reds ‘fan’ who tried to convince me that Hopper should be starting over Dunn. I asked him how big of a contract he thought Ryan Howard should receive after this year, and he answered much higher than the figure for Dunn’s option.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom to slander. I wish more people would sue the radio morons over the stupid things they say, and maybe we could make hate radio to expensive to produce. That’s the only way to put these guys out of business.

And I agree with Daedalus, as usual. Endymion sucks.

  14. Endymion

Whine, whine, whine, whine. People should not blog about baseball either if they can’t play it. In fact, people should not post on the internet if they can’t code it.

Also, Adam Dunn is Dave Kingman’s bad fielding cousin. And he sucks. I’d rather have Hopper starting than him in that three foot circle of outfield grass covers.

  15. Bill

I was listening to Tim Lewis this morning on Homer and now on Lance’s blog, they’re going into “what’s the big deal” mode, rather than ignoring it as they did yesterday.

IMO, it’s not a coincidence that WLW and Homer are both owned by Clear Channel and they’re supporting Cunningham.

  16. Joe

Cunningham is just the mouthpiece for the nasty, conservative streak that underlies some of Cincinnati. If they want to drive a 28 year old homerun hitter out of town, fine, there’s other teams that will take him.
