I mentioned it in “Down on the Farm” below, but I just wanted to point out a kid that is raking the ball for Billings in the rookie Pioneer League. Brandon Waring is a 21 year-old 3B who was just drafted out of Wofford College, and he can flat-out hit. Last night, he went 2-4 with two solo homers. That makes 16 big flies in just 62 games. Waring has hit two homers in each of the last two games, and in three of his last 9 games.

A batting average over .300, huge power numbers, an OPS well in excess of 900. Not bad.

  1. Todd Frazier’s hitting pretty well also, and he’s a SS.

  2. Yeah Bill, but I dont think anyone expects Frazier to stick at SS in the future. That said, Frazier is a much better prospect still.

  3. Who knows….I remember when it was a toss up whether to keep Barry Larkin or Kurt Stillwell…

  4. Lol that was a little before my time Bill, but I think at least at that point the Reds looked at both of them with the ability to play SS. I don’t think they see Todd as a true SS and plan on moving him off of the position at some point before he gets to the majors.

BTW that was the fastest response I have ever seen in my life.

  5. Can’t disagree about prospect status, I just wanted to highlight a kid who had his two homers in a game THREE times in the last week and a half.

  6. Young whipper snappers…

  7. I know Frazier is the 1st-rounder, but Waring is a freak. He homered off me this season for Wofford. I think both have potential to make it to the bigs; it will be fun to watch both kids develop.

  8. My only concern with Warring is his 75 Ks in 62 games played. He will have to cut down on that total to be successful at higher levels … but lets hope this recent power surge is the result of some adjustments.

  10. Bill, I remember the Larkin and Stillwell competition. Marge preferred Stillwell because she thought that he was cute! I think that she referred to him as her little Kurt, lol. Gotta love the Marge Schott era.

  11. On Waring, he admits sometimes he is ‘home run or nothing’. At least he knows it. Hopefully he can make some strides with his game to get away from that a little bit becuase the kid can mash a baseball.

  12. Has to cut down on the K’s some or else he turns into this guy.

  13. Brandon is hot! I guess thats why the big dogs pulled him to go to the play offs for 1A I guess they see something you people dont. You need to appreciate what you have since you haven’t had much lately.
