Matt Belisle vs. Sergio Mitre tonight at the Fish Palace as the Reds begin a weekend four-game series with the Marlins.

The comeback is on, by the way. The Reds are still in last place in the National League Central, but now they are tied with the Astros for last. Plus, they’re just a half-game out of fourth place in the Central.

Milwaukee and Chicago can begin sweating. The Little Red Machine is coming to get them.

The madness continues tonight. Discuss it here.

people think i’m crazy, but i believe. one of the reasons i believe is the 13 games against the sausages and the 12 games against the chub$ that the reds still have to play. but the bigger reason i believe is because the reds believe. he said “We really want to win, we’ve got to win every game” after yesterday’s game – the team thinks it can still win. now, time for my medication…

  2. Y-City Jim

The Reds are 17-13 against Florida over the past five seasons including 4-2 last year. I could go for 6-0 this time around.

  3. Y-City Jim

The Cubs concern me more than the Brewers. Pinella has them playing well right now.

  4. Bill

Working from memory, it seems like the Brewers beat up on the Reds….anyone have the actual numbers?

  5. DevilsAdvocate

Reds lookin’ awful good. 3-0! Hope Belisle’s got it working tonight.

  6. DevilsAdvocate

I dunno about the Brewers, but Bill Hall certainly beats up on the Reds in key situations, so I wouldn’t be surprised of the Brewers have won 60% of their games against the Reds over the past 3 years. I’ll look it up.

  7. DevilsAdvocate

Reds vs. Brewers (Reds W-L record shown)

    2007: 1-1
    2006: 9-10
    2005: 6-10
    2004: 10-8

Surprising, a little bit. Better than I thought.

  8. Y-City Jim

    Reds versus Brewers

    2007 (1-1)
    2006 (9-10)
    2005 (6-10)
    2004 (10-8)
    2003 (8-10)
    2002 (13-6)

  9. Y-City Jim

Bellisle with the K one batter too late but better late than never, I guess.

  10. DevilsAdvocate

Now hold on, Marty & co. – why is it a rock-solid principle that Adam Dunn should come out of the ballgame in late innings of close games? “Have to bring in Hopper,” they say, because “he can get to balls that Adam Dunn can only dream about getting.” Does that have a large effect on Reds’ relievers? Wouldn’t it be nice instead to have Dunn in the lineup in close games, or after the bullpen blows that close game? I know Dunn would have been a bit more fearsome to the ATL bullpen than Hopper in that 15 inning game yesterday.

And for that matter, didn’t Hopper badly misplay one or two flyballs yesterday?

I just don’t understand the logic that dictates (in their minds) that Dunn should play in blowouts but be taken out in close games. It’s anti-logic.

  11. DevilsAdvocate

Are the Marlins playing Griffey with the mega-shift? He seems to be consciously trying to poke grounders to the left side, in the past week or so.

  12. Y-City Jim

When does Cabrera become a free agent? His numbers out out of this world!

  13. Y-City Jim

Griffey just needs to swing the bat. If the pitch is worth of taking the opposite way then so be it. Otherwise swing. Griffey has eight career dingers against the Marlins.

  14. Jared

Has Griffey bunted down the 3rd base line lately? That’s always fun.

  15. DevilsAdvocate

Miguel Cabrera was arbitration-eligible for the first time this year. (Won his case, $7.4mil for a 1st-year arbitration guy? Wow!) I believe that means he has at least two more seasons, 2008 and 2009, where he can be offered arbitration by the Marlins. Then it’s free agency.

Or the Marlins could decide he’ll be too expensive and not offer him arbitration at all, putting him on the market early.

  16. Y-City Jim

I’d like to see Bellisle pitch every inning like that one! Put it on cruise control!

  17. Y-City Jim

The Marlins could trade Cabrera for an entire minor league system with quality 3B being a premium.

  18. Jared

Speaking of Eric Davis.. I saw a guy wearing his jersey in Atlanta tuesday night. I live in Montgomery, AL, so I’m sure I won’t be seeing THAT again any time soon.

  19. Y-City Jim

Interesting listening to the discussion as to why the Marlins don’t draw. I’ve always thought a ball park should be about a half hour to 45 minutes further north so they can draw more from Central Florida. Obviously it needs to be a retractable dome with superior AC.

  20. Y-City Jim

A couple of doubles. One by Dunn and one by Valentin.

Nice try by Dunn. If he weighed 240 he would have had it.

  21. Y-City Jim

    Ouch!!! He destroyed that ball!!!

  22. DevilsAdvocate

Yeah, Belisle doesn’t exactly have it workin’ tonight.

  23. Y-City Jim

Step 1 to getting out of the inning accomplished partially thanks to the guy being a bunting idiot.

  24. Jared

That’s embarassing.. If I’m going to strike out bunting, I’d want to at least foul it off.

  25. David

    Couple rumors to pass along…

The Boston Globe reported during the week that the the Reds had really started to push Arroyo. The Braves now have interest according to the Buster Olney. Krivsky is asking for Salty which would bring in yet another catcher.

The White Sox have pulled back on dealing Vazquez saying they are only interested in moving Contreras. That makes Arroyo the best pitcher available, provided of course the Ian Snell rumors are just rumors.

Additionally, there was a Dunn to the Brewers trade which picked up steam here on Milwaukee’s 1250 AM. The deal would send Dunn to the Brewers for Tony Gwynn, Jr., Matt Wise, and an infield prospect. Doug Melvin has denied the rumor, but this is the second Reds/Brewers rumor to surface and to be shot down.

  26. crypticphrasing

I’m tired of Belisle. He should be in the bullpen.

  27. Jared

I think if there’s anything we don’t need to give up, its good starting pitching.

  28. Chad

The Boston Globe reported during the week that the the Reds had really started to push Arroyo. The Braves now have interest according to the Buster Olney. Krivsky is asking for Salty which would bring in yet another catcher.

Yeah, but at least this catcher can hit.

If Adam Dunn is traded for Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Matt Wise, I will shut down Redleg Nation. This team won’t deserve any fan support.

  29. Jared

Who’s going to flip the coin to decide whether — I was going to say whether Freel gets picked off at second. Nevermind.

  30. David

You aren’t excited by the potential Harang, Bailey, Belisle, Livingston, ? rotation?

  31. Jimmy James

Ryan Freel gets picked off at first. Again.

If there is a dumber player in the majors than Freel, I haven’t seen him.

  32. Y-City Jim

If Arroyo is the best on the market then Krivsky needs to demand a king’s ransom.

That Dunn deal sounds like a disaster in the making.

  33. David

If the Reds lose both Arroyo and Dunn this season then the Reds will clear up $33 million when you count Milton’s salary. Who wants A-Rod? – HA!

  34. Y-City Jim

Agreed on Freel’s IQ. If Keppinger could only play CF.

  35. Jimmy James

I want A-Rod. Not at the expense of Dunn and Arroyo, though.

If any version of that Brewers trade is made, it will be “The Trade”, Part Two. Maybe worse than last year’s disaster trade with the Nationals, because Dunn is a much better player than either player Krivsky dealt away last July.

  36. Y-City Jim

Bellisle serving some serious batting practice. NASA should be tracking those shots!

  37. Chad

Wow, that was a tape measure shot against Belisle. His performance over the last month has been very frustrating. He has the ability, but hasn’t been showing it, that’s for sure.

  38. crypticphrasing

Belisle has had enough major league time that he should be more consistent, or at least show some improvement over time. He’s received regular turns, yet is showing less and less. He belongs in the ‘pen.

  39. Y-City Jim

Do JTM products actually contain meat?

Bellisle is done for the night.

  40. David

Forgot to mention this one as well: CoCo Crisp and Michael Bowden and an A level prospect to the Reds for Griffey, Jr.

  41. Y-City Jim

    Let’s start the comeback!!!

  42. Y-City Jim

I don’t think Castellini lets Krivsky make any of those deals! The Reds salary structure is not bad especially with Milton off the payroll next year.

  43. Y-City Jim

I’m glad that woman in the yellow sitting behind the hot tub is not in it!

  44. Y-City Jim

There is going to be more errors in this game than runs at the current rate.

  45. Y-City Jim

Before the night is done I sure would like to see Dunn demonstrate what a real orbit shot looks like!

  46. Y-City Jim

Good call by Mackanin with the double steal!

  47. Y-City Jim

Lopez grounds out. Who would have thought?

  48. Jared

Is anyone else as sick of the commercial break music as I am?

  49. Y-City Jim

Keppinger’s stance is interesting. He smokes a double!

  50. Y-City Jim

I watch FSOH so I get to be sick of Chuck Norris Mt. Dew commercials.

The table is set for the run producers.

  51. DevilsAdvocate

Here comes Jeff Brantley’s “homeboy”, Taylor Tankersley. A 6.46 ERA, he’s sporting. I was beginning to think everybody had a fantastic bullpen except Cincinnati.

  52. Y-City Jim

How is this guy 4-1? He must have Danny Graves type of luck.

  53. DevilsAdvocate

Bases loaded for Griffey. This is looking better.

  54. Jared

Griffey was thinking row section 143 on both of those swings.

  55. Y-City Jim

If FSOH had to drag in somebody to replace USC ex-great George Grande, why couldn’t it be Bench?

  56. Jared

Listen to them cheer as though that was the 3rd (or even 2nd) out..

  57. Y-City Jim

I love Griffey but that was a bad AB.

  58. DevilsAdvocate

‘sallright – Phillips and Dunn coming up. One of them will pick it up.

  59. Y-City Jim

This would be a good time for Phillips to get his 3rd hit of the night. Extra bases would be even better.

  60. Jared

And Phillips-Dunn is much better than Dunn-Phillips. We really don’t need a double play.

  61. DevilsAdvocate

Lefties hitting .378 off this guy. Sounds good for Dunn.

  62. DevilsAdvocate

Ouch. Bases loaded no out for the heart of the order, and no runs. That hurts.

  63. Jared

The Marlins don’t seem to be liking many of the calls tonight. Great throw by Griffey.

  64. DevilsAdvocate

So Hopper comes in for Dunn on the doubleswitch. So much for that.

  65. Y-City Jim

Hey!! It’s ex-Red Cody Ross in RF!

  66. DevilsAdvocate

Another bigtime threat. They wouldn’t fail miserably two innings in a row, would they?

    Oh, here comes Hopper.

  67. Jared

Good thing Valentin’s on in a situation when one run doesn’t matter yet or seeing him roll in to 3rd would be frustrating.

  68. Y-City Jim

Could Valentin really score from 3B on a bunt?

  69. Y-City Jim

Hopper is much better at the swinging bunt.

    Base hit!!!

  70. DevilsAdvocate

I take it all back, Norris. Good job. And you’ve earned Brennaman’s love for all-time.

  71. Y-City Jim

Too bad Benítez wasn’t pitching to Griffey-Phillips-Dunn last inning.

  72. Jared

Wow, they were slow updating the graphic and for a second it showed the bases being loaded. I’m not sure Valentin could have scored on a bunt, but I’m almost positive he can score on a ball hit to right field. 🙂

  73. DevilsAdvocate

I question that sacrifice in a big way. The pitcher hasn’t gotten an out, and you gift him one.

  74. DevilsAdvocate

Are you kidding me? Ryan Freel homerun!

  75. Y-City Jim

I agree, DA plus you give them the out from a productive hitter. If it was Pedro Lopez then I probably agree with it.

  76. DevilsAdvocate

Eighth inning looks pretty good right now. Coffey will likely still be on in the bottom of the inning.

  77. Jared

And Freel is 3-4 tonight. Granted, he gave one away when he forgot which direction 1st base was.

  78. DevilsAdvocate

True that, Jim. It’s hitter-dependent. For example, Juan Castro can sacrifice-bunt all day long and I won’t complain.

  79. DevilsAdvocate

As if to answer, Brennaman immediately announces, “Mike Stanton warming in the bullpen.”

  80. DevilsAdvocate

Good. Coffey stays in. No Stanton yet.

  81. Y-City Jim

Doesn’t warming up tire Stanton out?

  82. DevilsAdvocate

    Oh dear. Coffey self-destructive.

  83. Y-City Jim

Worse news! Ricky “Hit me” Stone warming up.

  84. DevilsAdvocate

    Ricky Stone warming up now.

  85. Y-City Jim

Take the door and slam it in their face, Todd!

  86. DevilsAdvocate

Brantley: “You cannot pitch, with your right hand, if that right hand, is around your throat.” What? Marty: “Absolutely right. It’s a physiological impossibility.” Zuh?

  87. Y-City Jim

How long has the current GM been on the job in Florida?

  88. Y-City Jim

My guess is Brantley is saying Coffey chokes in pressure situations.

  89. Y-City Jim

Should have kept the right hand around his throat on that bunt.

  90. DevilsAdvocate

Larry Beinfest has been Marlins GM since 2002.

  91. Y-City Jim

    Thanks, DA.

I wish the Reds had some of the prospects he has come up with.

Coffey removes right hand with a strikeout.

  92. DevilsAdvocate

Clutch! An eighth inning by the Reds bullpen passes by scoreless!

  93. DevilsAdvocate

Now Weathers warming in the bullpen.

  94. Y-City Jim

Are we not three outs away from the longest winning streak of the year?

  95. DevilsAdvocate

Oh, Stormy. Leadoff walk? We don’t need this.

  96. DevilsAdvocate

Stanton staying loose in the pen, in case.

  97. Chris W.

    4 in a row !!

    Look out Brewers! 🙄

  98. DevilsAdvocate

Whew. “Inclement” Weathers finds a way.

7-5 Final! I believe you’re right, that ties the longest winning streak of the season.

  99. Chris W.

Don’t look now fellas, but we’re out of the cellar!

  100. Chris W.

In fact, that wins moves us up to 4th, percentage points ahead of the Pirates.

  101. DevilsAdvocate

Baby steps. That’s now a tie for fourth place (pct ahead of Pittsburgh), with third place STL four games farther up.

  102. Y-City Jim

Actually we are in 4th place by .001 percentage points!

Pirates, BTW, are shopping Jack Wilson.

  103. Y-City Jim

and St. Louis got smoked by Atlanta today!

  104. Y-City Jim

Freel trying to find words during his postgame interview.

  105. Tom

I wish we were shopping our starting SS.

  106. Y-City Jim

Tonight’s starting SS or the regular starting SS?

  107. Y-City Jim

Tomorrow would be a nice time for the Dr. to show up and pitch a complete game.

Anyone have stats on the bullpen during the past 14 games?

  108. Chris

Reds pitchers, overall, during July (before tonight)

    131 IP, 4.05 ERA, 136 H, 52 BB, 102 K

    Full-season: 4.68 ERA.

  109. Chris

On this road trip (before tonight):

    7 games (4-3 record), 3.55 ERA, 66 IP, 73 H, 28 BB (!), 57 K.
