This will be my last DOTF for a week or so.  I am heading to Cooperstown, NY to watch my son and his team (Cincy Flames) play in the Cooperstown Dreams Park 10U Tournament.  You will be in capable hands until I get back.  Don’t burn the place down.

Louisville DNP

Carolina 5, Chattanooga 4

25 year-old Richie Gardner had another good outing at Chattanooga.  Gardner pitched 7 innings giving up 3 H, a BB, and 2 ER with 3 Ks.  He has a 2.25 ERA with 27 Ks, 23 H, and 8 BB in 28 IP since being promoted.

Game 1 Sarasota 3, Fort Meyers 1

23 year-old Michael Griffin went 3 for 4 with a SB.  He is hitting .309/.341/.429 after hitting .263/.304/.378 last year at Dayton.

21 year-old Johnny Cueto pitched 7 innings giving up just 4 H, a BB, and an ER with 6 Ks.  His ERA is 3.15 with 65 Ks, 67 H, and 21 BB in 74.1 IP.

Game 2 Fort Meyers 3, Sarasota 1

In both games 20 year-old Jay Bruce went 3 for 6 with 3 2B, a BB, and 2 RBI.  He is hitting .324/.377/.582

Dayton 3, South Bend 0

21 year-old Jordan Smith pitched 8 nearly perfect innings giving up just 3 H, 0 BB and 0 ER.  Smith lowered his ERA to 3.08 with 47 Ks, 66 H, and 14 BB in 73 IP.

19 year-old Juan Francisco went 2 for 4 with a 2B and an RBI.  He is hitting .277/.325/.478.

FWIW, I think both Smith and Francisco could/should stay at Dayton for the 2nd half.

With the win Dayton clinched a playoff birth, and a first half title.

If Richie Gardner really is back, it could be a big boon to the Reds pitching prospects. He’s pitched very little the last two years because of injuries. He looked like the “real deal” at 22 before the injuries.

The only reason Jordan Smith was taken out of the game at Dayton was to give Guardado a rehab inning in the 9th. His pitch count must have been phenominally low. He was just recalled from Billings this week.

That kid (Smith) was a catcher until like 2 years ago. This is his 2nd professional season and he only threw 20 innings in college

No gamethread today? Must have forgotten that it was a day game today.

Bailey struggling a bit today. Allowed three runs and 6 hits in three innings. And despite the more free-swinging ways of the Angels, Bailey has thrown a number of pitches, 58 so far.

And no K’s yet for Bailey, either.
